This shift towards deeper themes among comedy legends mirrors the evolving landscape \u200dof the entertainment industry.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jerry Seinfeld\u2019s days of \u201cyada yada yada\u201d are over.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The comedian behind \u201cthe show about nothing\u201d is getting serious of late, sharing sober advice with college graduates, supporting the state of Israel and explaining why comedy ain\u2019t what it used to be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The latter, inexplicably, caused him the most grief.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The 70-year-old told The New Yorker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/podcast\/the-new-yorker-radio-hour\/jerry-seinfeld-on-making-a-life-in-comedy-and-also-pop-tarts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">podcast<\/a> that the \u201cextreme Left\u201d is responsible for the modern decline in comedy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt used to be you would go home at the end of the day, most people would go, \u2018Oh,\u00a0\u2018Cheers\u2019\u00a0is on,\u201d he told the publication. \u201c\u2018Oh,\u00a0\u2018M.A.S.H.\u2019\u00a0is on, oh,\u00a0\u2018Mary Tyler Moore\u2019\u00a0is on. \u2026 You just expected, there\u2019ll be some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/an-autopsy-report-on-dead-bodybuilders\/\" title=\"An Autopsy Report on Dead Bodybuilders\">funny stuff<\/a> we can watch on TV tonight. Well, guess what? Where is it? This is the result of the extreme left and PC crap, and people worrying so much about offending other people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The reaction was wildly predictable. Conservatives, who by and large want comedians to say whatever they please sans filter, cheered the proclamation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The media and the Left \u2014 but we repeat ourselves \u2014 threw a fit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For example, CNN published an essay capturing the author\u2019s \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/05\/08\/opinions\/jerry-seinfeld-unfrosted-why-are-we-laughing-seymour\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">growing unease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d with the squeaky-clean comic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Seinfeld\u2019s \u201cobservational comedy\u201d leaves no resonances or echoes in its wake; it doesn\u2019t startle or upend expectations. And unlike the epochal sitcom David and Seinfeld brought forth together, Seinfeld\u2019s routines don\u2019t leave you with any perceptions of substance about what is truly mortifying about Being Human.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_738441\" style=\"width: 874px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-738441\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jamie McCarthy\/Getty Images for Good+Foundation<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Why is \u201cobservational comedy\u201d in scare quotes? Is that an inaccurate term? Better yet, why does every yuk have to come with a socially progressive message?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Slate weighed in, too, with a comically titled piece, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/culture\/2024\/05\/jerry-seinfeld-unfrosted-netflix-movie-pop-tarts-age.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhat\u2019s the Deal with Jerry Seinfeld?\u201d<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">His crime? He isn\u2019t singing from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fox-nation-breitbart-join-daily-wire-in-targeting-hollywood\/\" title=\"Fox Nation, Breitbart Join Daily Wire In Targeting Hollywood\">progressive hymnal<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c\u2026he\u2019s even started embracing his Judaism more publicly, and in December traveled to Tel Aviv to visit the families of Hamas hostages. Who can fault a Jewish celebrity for calling attention to the dead and missing of Israel? Yet he\u2019s notably not commented on the Netanyahu government, condemned the war, or discussed the suffering of Gazans.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Had he done the latter, this \u201cthink\u201d piece wouldn\u2019t exist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Other attacks on the comic legend proved pathetic. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2015\/07\/22\/10_seinfeld_episodes_that_are_racist_and_sexist_in_retrospect_partner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He\u2019s old! He\u2019s white! He\u2019s out of touch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Washington Post whined that he should \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2015\/07\/22\/10_seinfeld_episodes_that_are_racist_and_sexist_in_retrospect_partner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">wake up<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d and realize \u201cmean-spirited humor isn\u2019t cool anymore.\u201d Except Seinfeld is the opposite of \u201cmean-spirited.\u201d He\u2019s so clean you could eat Spam off his stand-up set.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Plus, the media doesn\u2019t mind mean-spirited gags that target a certain former President or MAGA nation. Or Christians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s a dodge. All of it. Why? Seinfeld was right, and he hit a nerve so deep it explains the extreme reactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cSeinfeld,\u201d one of TV\u2019s greatest sitcoms, routinely is labeled \u201cproblematic.\u201d That means some of the gags are now offensive\/racist\/sexist\/name-the-ist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2015\/07\/22\/10_seinfeld_episodes_that_are_racist_and_sexist_in_retrospect_partner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Salon cited 10 classic episodes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  for condemnation. And it\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2015\/07\/22\/10_seinfeld_episodes_that_are_racist_and_sexist_in_retrospect_partner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">far from alone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  on this front.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Seinfeld himself cited one example, recalling an episode where Kramer (Michael Richards) suggests using homeless people as rickshaw-style drivers. It makes no sense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We saw extreme attacks on comedy following the March 2020 death of George Floyd. Beloved shows like \u201cThe Golden Girls\u201d and \u201c30 Rock\u201d memory-holed select episodes with visuals evoking blackface.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The former episode featured a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2015\/07\/22\/10_seinfeld_episodes_that_are_racist_and_sexist_in_retrospect_partner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">beautician-style mud treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, suggesting how extreme the comedy attacks were at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The eighth and final season of \u201cBrooklyn Nine-Nine\u201d got overhauled following Floyd\u2019s death. The sly show\u2019s swan song genuflected to the BLM movement. Main character Jake, who adores being a cop, ditched police work for full-time parenting. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Laugh riot, no?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hilarious, R-rated comedies no longer flood the cineplex. Comedy titans like Jack Black, Will Ferrell, Melissa McCarthy and Seth Rogen now toil on the small screen or accept more serious roles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Todd Phillips is not a household name, but he\u2019s the comic director behind \u201cThe Hangover,\u201d \u201cRoad Trip\u201d and \u201cOld School.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He made the darkly serious \u201cJoker\u201d in 2019, explaining why he <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2019\/10\/joaquin-phoenix-cover-story\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">shifted from comedy to comic book fare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  to Vanity Fair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cGo try to be funny nowadays with this woke culture\u2026There were articles written about why comedies don\u2019t work anymore \u2014 I\u2019ll tell you why, because all the f***ing funny guys are like, \u2018F*** this s***, because I don\u2019t want to offend you.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Will Ferrell took grief for 2015\u2019s \u201cGet Hard\u201d for allegedly peddling racist jokes alongside co-star Kevin Hart, who is black. Why wasn\u2019t Hart offended?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Amy Schumer got pummeled by the woke Left for both \u201cSnatched\u201d (2015) and \u201cI Feel Pretty\u201d (2018) for similarly \u201cproblematic\u201d content. She hasn\u2019t led a movie comedy since.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And if you don\u2019t believe Seinfeld, what about Mel Brooks? The maestro behind \u201cThe Producers,\u201d \u201cYoung Frankenstein\u201d and \u201cBlazing Saddles\u201d insists over and again that the latter couldn\u2019t be made today. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Does anyone disagree? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The revered western satire skewers racism at every turn by turning the \u201cn-word\u201d on its users. If you\u2019d like to watch it again on Max, be ready for an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2015\/07\/22\/10_seinfeld_episodes_that_are_racist_and_sexist_in_retrospect_partner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">explainer\/trigger warning.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_738451\" style=\"width: 801px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-738451\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Warner Bros.\/Courtesy of Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Comedy always works best that way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brooks doesn\u2019t excoriate the Left while explaining why his classic comedy wouldn\u2019t be possible now. He just acknowledges the new abnormal, and we all nod in agreement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Seinfeld\u2019s complaint rings inarguably true, but it could have a short shelf life. Rebel comedians like Tim Dillon, Shane Gillis and Ryan Long are on the rise, and the recent Tom Brady roast on Netflix spent several days as one of the platform\u2019s most viewed TV shows or specials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And no comedian apologized or lost work for telling those cruel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/eight-saturday-night-live-stars-who-went-rogue-and-leaned-to-the-right\/\" title=\"Eight \u2018Saturday Night Live\u2019 Stars Who Went Rogue (And Leaned To The Right)\u00a0\">cutting jokes<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maybe comedy is on the comeback trail.
