His inspiring journey instills hope for advancements in cancer treatment.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/news\/\">  News <\/a>   <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/johnathanjones\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/johnathanjones\/%20\"><span>Johnathan Jones<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   May 16, 2024 at 12:28pm <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>A renowned Australian pathologist and oncologist is cancer-free a year after he became the first subject of his own experimental therapy to fight an aggressive form of brain cancer that claims most of its victims in less than a year.<\/p>\n<p>University of Sydney professor Richard Scolyer was traveling throughout <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/filmmaker-flees-europe-latest-movie-comes-8-year-prison-sentence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Europe<\/a> last May when he suffered a seizure in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ukraines-biggest-ally-poland-announces-abrupt-halt-weapons-shipments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Poland<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/05\/15\/lifestyle\/australian-doctor-richard-scolyer-cancer-free-year-after-terminal-diagnosis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Post<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>After an MRI back in Australia, the respected doctor received a terminal diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>The type of glioblastoma \u2014 an aggressive and terminal form of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/michael-strahan-reveals-daughters-scary-brain-cancer-diagnosis-good-morning-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brain cancer<\/a> \u2014 that he had meant he had roughly one year to live, or so he was told.<\/p>\n<p>Scolyer shared on his social media platform X Monday that a year after his diagnosis, he was cancer-free.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">I had brain <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MRI?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MRI<\/a> scan last Thursday looking for recurrent <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/glioblastoma?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#glioblastoma<\/a> (&#038;\/or treatment complications). I found out yesterday that there is still no sign of recurrence. I couldn\u2019t be happier!!!!!<\/p>\n<p>Thank you to the fabulous team looking after me so well especially my wife Katie &#038;\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/WdqZKLDvge\">pic.twitter.com\/WdqZKLDvge<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Professor Richard Scolyer AO (@ProfRScolyerMIA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ProfRScolyerMIA\/status\/1790144527824789739?\">May 13, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The doctor\u2019s own groundbreaking work on a different form of cancer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/mom-battling-melanoma-sends-grave-warning-to-all-tanners-stop-frying-your-skin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">melanoma<\/a>, is credited with his survival.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-australia-69006713\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The BBC<\/a>, which interviewed Scolyer on Tuesday, reported his work on successfully eliminating melanoma in nearly half of his patients is being used on him.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Do you think there will be a cure for cancer?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>His approach to immunotherapy \u201cuses the body\u2019s immune system to attack cancer cells, has dramatically improved outcomes for advanced melanoma patients globally,\u201d the BBC reported.<\/p>\n<p>Half of Scolyer\u2019s melanoma patients have been cured of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-model-actress-dayanara-torres-says-she-has-skin-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">skin cancer<\/a>, while only 10 percent of most people struggling with the aggressive cancer report beating it for good.<\/p>\n<p>Now, following his Monday MRI, the 57-year-old is beating the odds with his own cancer. He told the BBC he was anxious about his one-year checkup.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be honest, I was more nervous than I have been for any previous scan,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m just thrilled and delighted\u2026 couldn\u2019t be happier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m the best I have felt for yonks (a long time),\u201d Scolyer told the BBC. \u201cIt certainly doesn\u2019t mean that my brain cancer is cured \u2026 but it\u2019s just nice to know that it hasn\u2019t come back yet, so I\u2019ve still got some more time to enjoy my life with my wife Katie and my three wonderful kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The husband and father of three also said he was \u201cproud\u201d of his medical team \u2013 those who were \u201cwilling to take the risk in going down this path.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scolyer and his colleague at Melanoma Institute Australia, oncologist Georgina Long, worked together to craft a care plan they thought might work for him. There were a few bumps in the road.<\/p>\n<p>The doctor suffered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/little-girl-suffered-100-seizures-day-except-watched-mr-rogers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">seizures<\/a>, pneumonia and liver issues. But so far, the results are self-evident.<\/p>\n<p>Scolyer shared his hope that his own success with immunotherapy to treat cancer can lead to more success in others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[It] provides some hope that maybe this is a direction that\u2019s worth investigating more formally,\u201d Scolyer said.<\/p>\n<p>Oncologist Roger Stupp, an expert who specializes in the treatment of glioblastoma, told the BBC he wants to see how Scolyer is doing later this year before he becomes too excited about the groundbreaking approach to treating the brain cancer that claims the lives of so many.<\/p>\n<p>While Stupp found Monday\u2019s MRI results \u201cencouraging,\u201d he said he wants to see how Scolyer is doing in another six to 12 months.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p><b><i>A Note from Our Deputy Managing Editor:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span>I heard a chilling comment the other day: \u201cWe don\u2019t even know if an election will be held in 2024.\u201d <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>That wasn\u2019t said by a conspiracy theorist or a doomsday prophet.
