Matt Gaetz slammed Judge Juan Merchan, who is presiding in a New York City trial in which Trump is accused of making illegal campaign expenditures in the form of payments to pornographic performer Stormy Daniels.<\/p>\n<p>The firebrand congressman spoke in a news conference outside of the Manhattan Criminal Court on Thursday alongside other Republican members of Congress as reported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/05\/16\/us-news\/trumps-hush-money-nyc-trial-live-updates-testimony-photos-more-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepMattGaetz?\">@RepMattGaetz<\/a> on Trump Hush Money Trial: \u201cThis is a made up crime. Michael Flynn, Per Report\">corrupt judge<\/a>,\u201d Gaetz said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-matt-gaetz-gets-heated-exchange-anti-trump-witness-taking-money-russians\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gaetz<\/a> referenced the political conflicts of interest within <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/judge-merchan-refuses-let-trump-fire-back-stormy-daniels-testimony-wont-modify-gag-order\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Merchan\u2019s<\/a> own family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis judge whose own family is making six figures off of Democrat politics, that continues to gaslight the country, that there\u2019s some sort of crime committed by President Trump,\u201d Gaetz continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a made-up crime. No other American in the country would be charged with this type of crime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Merchan\u2019s daughter Loren Merchan is the president of the progressive political consulting firm Authentic Campaigns, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/03\/30\/us-news\/dem-clients-of-daughter-of-judge-in-trump-trial-raised-90m-off-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That Chicago-based organization has collected more than $15 million from a political action committee connected to Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, according to the Post.<\/p>\n<p>In fundraising emails for the lead prosecutor in Trump\u2019s first impeachment, Democratic California Rep. Adam Schiff, the Loren Merchan-led consulting firm used Trump\u2019s indictment to elicit donations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a somber moment, and unprecedented for a former president to be indicted, but his alleged offenses are also unprecedented,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democratic-rep-fundraises-off-upcoming-big-oil-hearing\/\" title=\"Democratic Rep Fundraises Off Upcoming \u2018Big Oil\u2019 Hearing\">fundraising email read<\/a>, according to the New York Post. \u201cTrump will respond as he always does \u2014 playing the victim and blaming others for having the temerity to investigate him in the first place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The former president\u2019s team argues this is proof of a clear conflict of interest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAuthentic Campaigns, and thus the judge\u2019s daughter, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/elon-musk-offers-prediction-on-trumps-polling-numbers\/\" title=\"Elon Musk Predicts Trump's Poll Numbers\">actively making money<\/a> from this sham attack against President Trump, rendering Judge Merchan conflicted out,\u201d Trump spokesman Steven Cheun said.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">I\u2019ll always stand with President Trump! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/jp3QZBA8Ti\">pic.twitter.com\/jp3QZBA8Ti<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Rep. Matt Gaetz (@RepMattGaetz) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepMattGaetz\/status\/1791099332638195891?\">May 16, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The charges against former President Trump have been brought about by George Soros-backed Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/matt-gaetz-erupts-walks-hunter-biden-deposition-hadnt-heard-one\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gaetz<\/a> further called into question the integrity of Michael Cohen, a former Trump confidante turned foe previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2018\/11\/29\/michael-cohen-making-surprise-court-appearance-in-new-york-1026107\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">convicted of lying to Congress<\/a>.
