Hearings continue as part of South Africa&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/uyghur-groups-to-file-genocide-charges-against-china-in-argentina\/\" title=\"Uyghur Groups to File Genocide Charges Against China in Argentina\">genocide case<\/a> against Israel.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"South Africa\">South Africa<\/a> is pushing the International Court of Justice to intervene before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/israel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Israel<\/a> can carry out a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/6-major-things-biden-failed-to-address-in-his-speech-to-congress\/\" title=\"6 Major Things Biden Failed To Address In His Speech To Congress\">full-scale invasion<\/a> of Rafah.<\/p>\n<p>The International Court of <a href=\"https:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/justice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Justice\">Justice<\/a> in The Hague held a hearing on Thursday after South Africa requested the court issue further constraints on Israel last week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIsrael\u2019s genocide has reached a new and horrific stage. \u2026 South Africa has traveled here today to do what it can to urgently stop this genocide. \u2026 Israel is escalating its attacks on Palestinians in Gaza, and in so doing, is willfully breaching the binding orders of this court,\u201d Vusi Madonsela, South Africa\u2019s ambassador to the Netherlands, said in South Africa\u2019s opening statement.<\/p>\n<p>Israel will have a chance to address the court on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The hearings this week are a part of South Africa\u2019s case alleging Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians. In January, the court ordered\u00a0Israel\u00a0to increase its efforts to prevent the killing and harm of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/palestine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Palestinian<\/a> civilians in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/gaza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gaza<\/a> but did not call for a ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p>Israeli leaders have vehemently and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/los-angeles-county-sheriff-concedes-re-election-race-slams-local-media-political-establishment\/\" title=\"Los Angeles County Sheriff Concedes Re-Election Race; Slams Local Media, Political Establishment\">repeatedly denied allegations<\/a> of genocide. <\/p>\n<p>Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a short video message in January, \u201cLike every country, Israel has an inherent right to defend itself,\u201d and added, \u201cThe vile attempt to deny Israel this fundamental right is blatant discrimination against the Jewish state, and it was justly rejected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The United States and several other governments have publicly said they do not support a complete Israeli invasion of Rafah, where more than a million Palestinians have sought refuge. Limited operations have been carried out, while roughly\u00a0600,000 people have fled Rafah since May 6, <a href=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/report\/occupied-palestinian-territory\/hostilities-gaza-strip-and-israel-flash-update-166\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according <\/a>to the United Nations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has become increasingly clear that Israel\u2019s actions in Rafah are part of the end game in which Gaza is utterly destroyed as an area capable of human habitation,\u201d Vaughan Lowe, a British lawyer, told the court, according to the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/16\/world\/middleeast\/icj-rafah-israel-gaza-south-africa.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>New York Times<\/a><\/em>. \u201cThis is the last step in the destruction of Gaza and its Palestinian people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Gaza health ministry, which is controlled by Hamas, said that roughly 35,000 people have been killed during the conflict, though that figure does not distinguish between civilians and combatants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSadly, South Africa is yet again compelled to return to this court in recognition of its obligation under the Genocide Convention due to the continuing annihilation of the Palestinian people with over 35,000 killed and most of Gaza reduced to rubble,\u201d Madonsela added.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Netanyahu said last week that Israeli forces have killed 14,000 terrorists and roughly 16,000 civilians.<\/p>\n<p>A main pillar of Hamas\u2019s strategy is to embed itself within and underneath Gaza\u2019s population centers to make Israel\u2019s military\u00a0decide whether to attack, subsequently risking civilian lives, or not doing so and allowing Hamas to live unabated.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa urgently seeks the International Court of Justice&#8217;s intervention to prevent Israel from launching a full-scale invasion of Rafah.
