Bob Menendez (D-NJ)<\/a> is undergoing treatment for breast cancer and plans to have a mastectomy, according to a press release sent out while the senator<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3005512\/prosecutors-bob-menendez-power-for-sale-bribery-trial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> was in court <\/a>on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/new-jersey\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New Jersey<\/a> senator appeared at the Federal District Court in Manhattan on Thursday where<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/crime\/3001819\/bob-menendez-corruption-trial-everything-to-know\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> he is on trial <\/a>on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democratic-senators-up-for-reelection-in-2024-mostly-quiet-on-trump-indictment\/\" title=\"Most Democratic senators seeking reelection in 2024 remain silent on Trump's indictment.\">charges revolving<\/a> around <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/crime\/3001819\/bob-menendez-corruption-trial-everything-to-know\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an alleged corrupt relationship<\/a> with three New Jersey businessmen and the Egyptian government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNadine is suffering from Grade 3 breast cancer, which will require her to have mastectomy surgery,\u201d Menendez said in a statement. \u201cWe are, of course, concerned about the seriousness and advanced stage of the disease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe will require follow up surgery and possibly radiation treatment. We hope and pray for the best results,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Menendez, his wife, and three businessmen were indicted last fall on corruption charges. The U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office for the Southern District of New York alleged that Menendez accepted bribes in exchange for using his influence as the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to benefit the Egyptian government.  <\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The bribes included hundreds of thousands of dollars in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/money\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cash<\/a>, gold bars, mortgage payments, a luxury vehicle, and more.<\/p>\n<p>His wife, Nadine, was also charged and has been granted a separate trial in July. She was slated to stand trial with him initially, but was granted a delay after her lawyers disclosed to the court she was dealing with a medical condition that required surgery.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The new information about the Senator\u2019s wife comes during his first week on trial. The senator\u2019s lawyers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courtlistener.com\/docket\/67819367\/251\/1\/united-states-v-menendez\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claim in an opening statement<\/a>, that Nadine Menendez withheld information from the senator, causing him to believe that there was nothing unlawful going on and that she is to blame for the gold bars and other bribes prosecutors claim he was involved in.<\/p>\n<p>Menendez and his wife have pleaded not guilty to the charges they face. John Fetterman (D-PA), who has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2803191\/fetterman-bob-menendez-endorsement-andy-kim\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">continuously reiterated his call<\/a> for Menedez to be expelled from the Senate, expressed sympathy for his wife\u2019s diagnosis, while also condemning the New Jersey senator\u2019s legal strategy of throwing his \u201cwife under the bus,\u201d on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI sincerely hope that they have a full, complete recovery. I\u2019ve had members of my family touched by cancer, and it\u2019s terrible, it\u2019s awful,\u201d Fetterman said. \u201cI can\u2019t imagine anybody in his legal circumstance to think that throwing your wife under the bus is ever good. She is sick with cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t really think that\u2019s a good PR move.
