The AI\u2063 was trained using\u200b scenes featuring \u200bcharacters from popular TV shows such as\u200d &#8220;Friends&#8221; and\u200d &#8220;The Big Bang Theory.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div data-td-block-uid=\"tdi_78\">\n<p>Researchers say they have trained an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>artificial intelligence<\/a> model to be able to detect sarcasm, according to a Thursday report.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>research<\/a> was presented at the Acoustical Society of America and the Canadian Acoustical Association in Ottawa by Netherlands-based researchers, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/article\/2024\/may\/16\/researchers-build-ai-driven-sarcasm-detector\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>the <em>Guardian<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers said they trained the AI model using scenes from popular TV shows, focusing on Chandler Bing from <em>Friends<\/em> and Sheldon Cooper from <em>The Big Bang Theory<\/em>. The data included Chandler responding to the idea of spending a day putting furniture together with, \u201cYes, and we\u2019re very excited about it,\u201d and Sheldon telling another character, \u201cIt\u2019s just a privilege to watch your mind at work,\u201d according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are able to recognize sarcasm in a reliable way, and we\u2019re eager to grow that,\u201d Matt Coler at the University of Groningen\u2019s speech technology <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fed-found-economy-is-recovering-much-faster-than-officials-expected\/\" title=\"Fed Found Economy Is Recovering Much Faster Than Officials Expected\">lab<\/a> told the outlet. \u201cWe want to see how far we can push it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Researchers said multiple cues were necessary when effectively attempting to identify sarcasm, that text alone would be more difficult for a sarcasm detector to decipher, and that communicating human emotions to an AI model provided difficulties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you start studying sarcasm, you become hyper-aware of the extent to which we use it as part of our normal mode of communication,\u201d Coler said. \u201cBut we have to speak to our devices in a very literal way, as if we\u2019re talking to a robot, because we are.
