Yet, Biden implemented draconian emissions limits for all vehicles, ensuring that within nine years 67 percent of all new passenger cars and trucks will be electric.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1132235684\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-d569626289c5631c849efb877fe29af0 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-d569626289c5631c849efb877fe29af0\"><\/div>\n<p>In the old days, a centralized state controlling manufacturing and commerce, production, prices, wages, and conditions in our biggest sectors would be called \u201cfascist.\u201d Today, we simply refer to it as the Green New Deal.<\/p>\n<p>And, after forcing automakers to build more <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/06\/29\/electric-cars-are-an-expensive-scam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">substandard, technologically regressive, overpriced, and unpopular<\/a> electric cars, Biden has now slapped enormous tariffs on imports, not only ensuring that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/jim-jordan-leaves-open-possibility-for-cuts-to-pentagon-budge\/\" title=\"Jim Jordan Leaves Open Possibility for Cuts to Pentagon Budge\">taxpayers continue<\/a> to prop up a state-run project with billions but also guaranteeing that everyone will pay more for all cars.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, the White House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntu.org\/publications\/detail\/10-things-to-know-about-bidens-import-tax-increases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">enacted<\/a> new tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminum in the name of the American worker. There are somewhere around 14 million manufacturing jobs that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/664993\/private-sector-manufacturing-employment-in-the-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rely<\/a> on steel. They will pay the price. As will every consumer.<\/p>\n<p>Biden also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.securityinfowatch.com\/industry-news\/news\/55039758\/biden-doubling-tariffs-on-chinese-semiconductors-other-products\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">doubled<\/a> tariffs on Chinese semiconductors from 25 percent to 50 percent. Populists on both sides will contend that these serve a national security purpose. That\u2019s debatable. Though Biden didn\u2019t even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/the-china-tariffs-arent-about-national-security\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">make<\/a> that argument.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-2e2d60b1fea7b39dc7b4f9107fb3d1e1 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-2e2d60b1fea7b39dc7b4f9107fb3d1e1\"><\/div>\n<p>In any event, there\u2019s no national security purpose for Biden to raise tariffs from 7.5 percent to 25 percent on the components that make EV batteries or quadruple tariffs on EVs from 25 percent to 100 percent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrump doesn\u2019t get the basics. He thinks his tariffs are being paid by China,\u201d candidate Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JoeBiden\/status\/1138506137697959939\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">explained<\/a> back in 2019, when it was convenient. \u201cAny freshman econ student could tell you that the American people are paying his tariffs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed.<\/p>\n<p>So how is this different? The New York Times, in a piece published soon after the White House\u2019s announcement, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/14\/us\/politics\/biden-trump-china-trade.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">explains<\/a> \u201cHow Biden\u2019s Trade War With China Differs From Trump\u2019s.\u201d In summation, a Democrat is now president, and his environmental goals, according to the Times, are chaste.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-aad8740a6d78dfd807f7f944c42d69e5 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-aad8740a6d78dfd807f7f944c42d69e5\"><\/div>\n<p>Economic reality doesn\u2019t bend to your strong feelings on the environment, on tariffs, or even on electric vehicles. Why do we even assume winning the EV war is a good thing? If an EV future were inevitable, the state wouldn\u2019t have to bribe and force companies to produce them. Then again, whenever Democrats talk about \u201cmanufacturing jobs,\u201d they mean the manufacturing of EVs or solar panels. Even in that regard, limiting choices on supposedly \u201cclean energy\u201d alternatives makes no sense.<\/p>\n<p>Really, what we have is a corporate\/union bailout. But even the workers supposedly being protected aren\u2019t going to have jobs for too long if we keep propping up technocratic wishcasting with billions in tax dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Even with subsidies, mandates, and endless puffery about the alleged upsides, carmakers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonews.com\/mobility-report\/every-ev-leads-6000-losses-automakers-bcg-says\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lose<\/a> around $6,000 on every $50,000 EV they sell. Ford says it is <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/industry\/renewables\/ford-losing-100000-per-every-electric-vehicle-report\/articleshow\/110151038.cms?from=mdr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">losing<\/a> $100,000 on every EV it produces. In 2022 the auto giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/03\/23\/ford-2022-unit-financials.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lost<\/a> $2.1 billion on EVs. In 2023, it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/04\/24\/business\/ford-earnings-ev-losses\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lost<\/a> $4.7 billion. In 2024, Ford expects to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketplace.org\/2024\/02\/07\/ford-is-losing-money-on-electric-vehicles-but-saving-money-on-emissions-fines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lose<\/a> over $5 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Granted, I\u2019m not a business owner, but that sounds like an<em> insane <\/em>model. Would any company continue producing cars that hemorrhage money if it were not impelled by the state?<\/p>\n<p>Now, these auto giants will be able to function with even less genuine competition. And the losses on EVs will be \u201coffset\u201d by raising the price on cars that people do desire. In the short term, the cronyists in the auto industry also know that if they do the bidding of politicians, they will be bailed out when they fail.<\/p>\n<p>Tariffs play on the good intentions of voters \u2014 much like minimum wages \u2014 so they are the perfect election year issue. All they do is raise costs for consumers and businesses and undermine innovation. Even if we concede the popular claim that Americans \u201cdon\u2019t make anything\u201d here anymore \u2014 a myth \u2014 we shouldn\u2019t be incentivizing or compelling our largest manufacturing sector to build things that consistently lose money.<\/p>\n<p>If China wants to subsidize the world EV market, let them.
