Burgum never polled above single digits in any primary poll.<\/p>\n<p>Now our time in the sun has returned as the North Dakota governor is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/05\/09\/doug-burgum-trump-vice-president-00156922\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">latest front-runner<\/a> to be former President Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/hunter-biden-defector-emails-pipeline-to-obama-admin-seen-as-currency\/\" title=\"Hunter Biden Defector Emails: 'Pipeline' to Obama Admin Seen as 'Currency'\">vice president<\/a>. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.betonline.ag\/sportsbook\/futures-and-props\/us-election\/vice-president\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">betonline.ag<\/a>, Burgum has the best odds to win the VP spot, followed by Tim Scott, J.D. Vance, and Marco Rubio.<\/p>\n<p>Coinciding with the newfound press is a surge of interest in the governor. His time on the campaign trail was short, and despite strong debate appearances he remains relatively unknown (outside the online Burgumentum jokes.) A dive into his past, however, reveals exactly why Trump is favoring him for VP.<\/p>\n<p>Doug Burgum has quietly built a principled and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wisconsin-dems-rely-on-front-group-to-attack-republican-incumbent-while-decrying-dark-money\/\" title=\"Wisconsin Dems Rely on Front Group To Attack Republican Incumbent While Decrying Dark Money\">successful record<\/a> in North Dakota. He prioritized economic growth, supporting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibisworld.com\/united-states\/economic-profiles\/north-dakota\/#EconomicOverview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">state\u2019s oil and gas industry<\/a>, enacting <a href=\"https:\/\/bismarcktribune.com\/news\/state-and-regional\/govt-and-politics\/north-dakota-gov-doug-burgum-signs-massive-tax-cut-package\/article_b51f38ec-e4fa-11ed-a0e8-47f6780a3f37.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">historic tax relief<\/a>, and has held the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibisworld.com\/united-states\/economic-profiles\/north-dakota\/#SectorStatistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unemployment rate significantly below the U.S. average<\/a> for his entire time in office.<\/p>\n<p>Though he is not the staunchest conservative in Republican politics, he has championed the broader conservative causes well. Burgum <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/abortion-north-dakota-six-week-ban-2bccde2925d30dd4772aaed84f3c2d98#:~:text=Doug%20Burgum%20signed%20legislation%20banning,incest%20victims%20cannot%20get%20abortions.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">signed one of the strictest abortion bans in the country<\/a>, signed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2023\/04\/11\/north-dakota-governor-trans-athlete-bans-00091558\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ban on trans athletes in women\u2019s sports<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.nd.gov\/news\/burgum-designates-north-dakota-second-amendment-sanctuary-state-signs-bills-protecting-gun\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">declared North Dakota a Second Amendment sanctuary state<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1be01ecda3cd216beb424ae508746ded fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1be01ecda3cd216beb424ae508746ded\"><\/div>\n<p>Beyond his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trumps-feud-with-iowas-governor-tests-his-lead-in-crucial-caucuses\/\" title=\"Trump's clash with Iowa's governor challenges his advantage in vital caucuses.\">strong conservative record<\/a>, he\u2019s also a small-town American success story. After college in North Dakota, a successful chimney-sweeping business, and business school at Stanford, Bergum built a billion-dollar software company, in North Dakota of all places.<\/p>\n<p>Bergum sold his company, Great Plains Software, to Microsoft in 2001 and worked at Microsoft for several years after. His time in tech has given him a powerful network of donors and supporters. Scott McNealy, co-founder of Java programming language creator Sun Microsystems; Rob Walton, of the Walmart family fortune and owner of the Denver Broncos football team; and Jeffery Hildebrand, billionaire CEO of an oil and gas company are just a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inforum.com\/news\/north-dakota\/doug-burgum-is-mostly-paying-for-his-own-presidential-campaign-but-who-are\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">few of the powerful donors in Burgum\u2019s network<\/a>. On top of his own wealth, potentially north of $1 billion, Burgum\u2019s network would be a boon for a Trump campaign up against the Democrat fundraising machine.<\/p>\n<p>His conservative record, respectable as it is, is not why Trump is considering him for VP. Doug\u2019s most powerful strength is simply his likability. With a cowboy hat on at his cattle ranch and a small-town success story, Bergum radiates genuine likability. He has done unthinkable things \u2014 like <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/transgender-pronouns-schools-veto-north-dakota-3f867fcf1460c11af5da4d7e0f7661e8\">vetoing a bill that would hand him a political victory<\/a> because it\u2019s bad policy \u2014 that give him an air of principle and likability Trump is severely lacking.<\/p>\n<p>As any good governor does, Doug Burgum made the choices he believed were best for his state. Some will disagree with his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.nd.gov\/news\/burgum-stresses-opportunities-carbon-capture-storage-and-utilization-us-energy-secretary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">support for carbon capture<\/a>, though it\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/summitcarbonsolutions.com\/governor-doug-burgum-carbon-sequestration-would-add-70b-to-north-dakota-tax-revenues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">financial boon<\/a> for North Dakota and provides cover for oil and gas expansion in the Bakken oil field. Some people are <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/politics-north-dakota-agriculture-bill-gates-7b08b37e887b74bfe2deff2e9cf5e05b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wary of his ties to Bill Gates<\/a>, despite his long history in tech. These criticisms mean little in the end.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-9114c02f4b9d7e92f376c895c195fbdb fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-9114c02f4b9d7e92f376c895c195fbdb\"><\/div>\n<p>Burgum is broadly palatable, has tremendous fundraising potential, holds electable positions, and, yes, has a strong conservative record. He\u2019s genuine and tries to do the right thing, which is precisely why he isn\u2019t the perfect politician. On the short list for vice president, however, he is the best choice.<\/p>\n<p>Trump needs a likable VP who can assist with enacting his agenda in an approachable and drama-free manner. J.D. Vance is not that Republican. Marco Rubio is not that Republican.<\/p>\n<p>We need to avoid the infighting and avoid taking political cues from unsuccessful platforms. Further, the biggest critics of Trump on the right are not the ones who decide who will be VP.
