The ongoing war in \u200dUkraine, entering \u200bits third year, raises doubts\u2062 about the proclaimed goal of &#8220;defending democracy.&#8221; Recent \u2064actions \u200dby U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Ukraine cast a shadow on the motives behind the assistance.\u200c Postponed elections and intricate geopolitical dynamics further\u200d blur the democratic principles under scrutiny.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><\/p>\n<div class=\"article-content\">\n<p>It\u2019s getting harder and harder to pretend the war in Ukraine, now in its third year, is about \u201cdefending democracy,\u201d as our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/weak-government-complicit-media-silicon-valley-are-torching-america\/\" title=\"Weak Government, Complicit Media, Silicon Valley Are Torching America\">political elites<\/a> in Washington insist.<\/p>\n<p>This is especially true when Secretary of State Antony Blinken shows up in Ukraine to deliver billions of U.S. taxpayer dollars to fund the war, proclaims that Ukraine\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/a_newsman\/status\/1790453027561722202\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scheduled presidential elections this spring are canceled<\/a> until \u201cconditions allow\u201d (Ukraine has not held elections since 2019), and then jaunts off to a popular Kyiv nightclub to play a boomerish cover of Neil Young\u2019s \u201cRockin\u2019 in the Free World.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1277886069\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-12e8fd3ded6c067f2ad5eb3459c345ff fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-12e8fd3ded6c067f2ad5eb3459c345ff\"><\/div>\n<p>That actually happened this week. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"> <span class=\"409PT13RFV5ADJiScXunGLez2BtoplHqswgMEkfyx\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken performs\u201cRocking to the Free World\u201d in a bar in Kyiv. \/\/ video by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cspan?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@cspan<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/EgSrl3UKWh\">pic.twitter.com\/EgSrl3UKWh<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ostap Yarysh (@OstapYarysh) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OstapYarysh\/status\/1790454002263482450?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 14, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/span> <\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>And it happened just days after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/world-nation\/story\/2024-05-10\/russia-trying-to-break-through-ukraine-defenses-kharkiv-region-zelensky\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Russia unleashed an armored ground offensive<\/a> in Ukraine\u2019s northeast near the country\u2019s second-largest city, Kharkiv. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky continued pushing the same quixotic message he\u2019s been repeating for years now: Ukraine is in dire need of even more Western aid, without which the war effort will collapse, but also Ukraine is capable of \u201cwinning\u201d this war \u2014 that is, expelling all Russian forces from Ukrainian territory.<\/p>\n<p>At this point, no one really believes that. Nor does anyone really believe \u2014 if they ever did \u2014 that Ukraine, one of the most corrupt countries in the world <em>before<\/em> the war began, is a bastion of democracy. Indeed, asked about presidential elections in Ukraine, which were scheduled for this spring but have been delayed indefinitely, Blinken said bluntly that there will be no elections until \u201call Ukrainians\u201d can vote.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-58b6ac7b9e6f4dbdece65962d228ccc3 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-58b6ac7b9e6f4dbdece65962d228ccc3\"><\/div>\n<p>That means no elections even if a ceasefire or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/house-republicans-urge-biden-to-keep-embassy-in-jerusalem\/\" title=\"House Republicans Urge Biden to Keep Embassy in Jerusalem\">peace plan<\/a> is in place, so long as Russia controls any Ukrainian territory. In other words, it\u2019s a recipe for the permanent suspension of elections in Ukraine, since any ceasefire or negotiated peace process will inevitably see Russia in control of at least some Ukrainian territory.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also a profound dishonesty at work here on the part of the Biden administration and the Zelensky government. For many years, Ukrainian elections pitted the pro-Russian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/joe-biden-knows-he-messed-up-on-fracking-at-debate-and-is-now-doing-damage-control-the-daily-wire\/\" title=\"Joe Biden Knows He Messed Up On Fracking At Debate And Is Now Doing Damage Control | The Daily Wire\">eastern parts<\/a> of the country against the European-leaning western parts, with the latter constantly accusing Moscow of meddling in the country\u2019s elections to keep Ukraine in Russia\u2019s orbit. Glance at a map of Ukraine\u2019s election results from 2004 or 2010, and it\u2019s easy to see the geographical-political divide in the country. <\/p>\n<p>The Russian invasion has now taken many of those voters in the eastern parts of Ukraine out of the electoral equation. So why would Ukraine\u2019s current pro-Western leadership want to cancel elections until these pro-Russian areas are able to vote?<\/p>\n<p>At the risk of sounding like a conspiracy theorist, allow me to suggest that maybe the insistence on \u201call Ukrainians\u201d being able to vote is a cynical ploy to prevent elections from taking place in the near future. Maybe Zelensky knows that Ukrainians, if given the chance, would vote his regime out of office and pursue peace negotiations with Moscow that Zelensky\u2019s Western sponsors won\u2019t allow.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-3b48003ca44c52f203b68add903cadf8 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-3b48003ca44c52f203b68add903cadf8\"><\/div>\n<p>Given what we know about Western elites\u2019 view of \u201cdemocracy,\u201d it isn\u2019t that far-fetched. After all, when they talk about \u201cprotecting democracy\u201d here in the U.S., they don\u2019t mean ensuring that citizens can vote in the leaders of their choosing. As cybersecurity expert <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/02\/20\/government-backed-censors-who-rigged-the-2020-election-are-now-stealing-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mike Benz explained on a Tucker Carlson podcast back in February<\/a>, they mean protecting the institutions of democratic society and insulating them from reform \u2014 institutions like the CIA, FBI, IMF, and the World Bank. Those institutions, not the will of the voters, are what must be protected above all. And if it comes down to a contest between the two, the institutions must be protected from the voters \u2014 that is, \u201cdemocracy\u201d must be protected from the threat of free and fair elections.<\/p>\n<p>So while it\u2019s easy to scoff at the indefinite postponement of elections in Ukraine (and easier still to scoff at Blinken\u2019s cringe-inducing guitar-playing in Kyiv), we would do well to consider what it might mean for election here at home. The truth is, our own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/did-ag-barr-create-durham-special-counsel-to-prevent-president-trump-from-releasing-information-related-to-crossfire-hurricane\/\" title=\"Did AG Barr Create Durham Special Counsel to Prevent President Trump from Releasing Information Related to Crossfire Hurricane?\">deep state<\/a> might well try to deploy this exact same rhetoric to delay or suspend elections in the United States one day, perhaps even this November. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not hard to imagine how that might play out. A series of threats or purported attacks on \u201celection infrastructure\u201d would lead to calls for a delay, until we can ensure that <em>all<\/em> Americans can vote. In time, the categories of Americans who <em>must<\/em> be allowed to vote in order for the election to be legitimate might even expand to include felons and illegal immigrants. Is that far-fetched? After what we saw in 2020, I don\u2019t think so.<\/p>\n<p>The main takeaway from the cancellation of elections in Ukraine is that the permanent regime in Washington doesn\u2019t really want free and fair elections in Ukraine right now for the same reason they don\u2019t really want free and fair elections here in America: The voters might get in the way of their agenda, and they can\u2019t have that.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-7478653d99d40ea20dad891a65545ae2 fdrlst__b89e9-after-post-content\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-7478653d99d40ea20dad891a65545ae2\"><\/div>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">    \t\t\t\t\t   \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As the war in Ukraine enters its third year, the narrative of &#8220;defending democracy&#8221; is fading.
