The \u2064situation\u200b intensifies with \u200cgrowing tensions in military operations and political \u2064discord surrounding Gaza&#8217;s future.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A dispute has erupted over the future of Israel\u2019s military operations and its post-war strategy for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Gaza\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Benjamin Netanyahu\">Gaza<\/a> Strip, with the country\u2019s top defense chief pressing Israeli Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Benjamin-Netanyahu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Benjamin Netanyahu\">Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a> to renounce hard-right calls to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/foreign-policy\/3003771\/netanyahu-allies-israel-annex-gaza-holy-land\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"annex\">annex<\/a> the region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe \u2018day after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/hamas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Hamas\">Hamas<\/a>\u2019 will only be achieved with Palestinian entities taking control of Gaza,\u00a0accompanied by international actors,\u00a0establishing a governing alternative to Hamas\u2019s rule,\u201d Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Wednesday. \u201cI must reiterate: I will not agree to the establishment of Israeli military rule in Gaza. Israel must not establish civilian rule in Gaza.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gallant drew that line as a challenge to Netanyahu amid a swirl of controversy around the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/officials-say-meena-harris-social-media-posts-could-interfere-with-u-s-diplomacy-with-india\/\" title=\"Officials say Meena Harris social media posts could interfere with U.S. diplomacy with India\">prime minister\u2019<\/a>s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/foreign-policy\/3002563\/netanyahu-under-fire-lack-strategy-defeat-hamas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>strategy<\/a> \u2014 or lack thereof, as U.S. policymakers and senior Israeli military officials have implied in recent days. That controversy has festered due to an apparent tension between Netanyahu\u2019s pledge to achieve \u201ctotal victory\u201d over Hamas and a ceasefire deal to secure the release of the hostages still held by the terrorists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI call on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to make a decision and declare that Israel will not establish civilian control over the Gaza Strip, that Israel will not establish military governance in the Gaza Strip, and that a governing alternative to Hamas in the Gaza Strip will be raised immediately,\u201d Gallant said.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>Palestinians walk through the debris after an Israeli air and ground offensive in Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip, Wednesday, May 15, 2024. (AP Photo\/Saher Alghorra)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Netanyahu, for his part, rebuffed the idea of a \u201ctwo-state solution\u201d in the shadow of the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I\u2019d like to see is a non-Hamas civilian administration there with an Israeli <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/john-ullyot-two-lessons-on-military-accountability-for-president-biden\/\" title=\"John Ullyot: Two Lessons on Military Accountability for President Biden\">military responsibility<\/a>, overall military responsibility,\u201d Netanyahu told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/05\/15\/cnbc-transcript-prime-minister-of-israel-benjamin-netanyahu-speaks-with-cnbcs-sara-eisen-on-squawk-on-the-street-today.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>CNBC<\/a> earlier Wednesday. \u201cLook, the two-state solution that people talk about is basically, would be the greatest reward for the terrorist that you can imagine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne, it would be a tremendous reward, historic precedent of giving those people who committed the worst massacre against the Jewish people since the Holocaust on a single day, giving them a prize,\u201d he added. \u201cAnd secondly, it would be a state that would be immediately taken over by Hamas and Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gallant\u2019s broadside expanded on a critique offered last week in private, though it was promptly leaked, by Israel Defense Forces chief of staff Herzi Halevi, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/republican-congressman-considers-suit-over-unconstitutional-house-gun-ban\/\" title=\"Republican Congressman Considers Suit Over \u2018Unconstitutional\u2019 House Gun Ban\u00a0\">top members<\/a> of the Biden administration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHamas no longer functions as a military organization \u2014 most of its battalions have been dismantled, and it has turned to terrorist warfare, conducted by individuals and small squads,\u201d Gallant said. \u201cThe IDF is operating in Rafah in order to dismantle Hamas\u2019s remaining battalions, to locate the hostages, eliminate terrorists, and block [Hamas] smuggling routes. However, as long as Hamas retains control over civilian life in Gaza,\u00a0it may rebuild and strengthen,\u00a0thus requiring the IDF to return and fight in areas where it has already operated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those salvos portend a larger political clash over Israel\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/inside-the-gop-plan-to-oppose-bidens-iran-deal\/\" title=\"Inside the GOP Plan to Oppose Biden\u2019s Iran Deal\">long-term plans<\/a> for Gaza. Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, an ultranationalist politician who secured a place in the coalition government by delivering parliamentary votes that Netanyahu required to form a governing majority, called Tuesday for Israel to conquer the Gaza Strip and claim it as part of \u201cthe Holy Land\u201d of the state of Israel, while other Israeli politicians offered more artful condemnations of Gallant\u2019s posture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people of Israel are not ready to be humiliated. The people of Israel are not ready to be led into an Oslo 2.0 process that will lead Israel to another disaster,\u201d Israeli Justice Minister Yariv Levin said, referring to the 1993 deal between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization\u00a0that led to the formation of the Palestinian Authority. \u201cThe people of Israel will not agree to hand Gaza over to the control of the terrorist Palestinian Authority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Levin\u2019s rebuke hewed to Netanyahu\u2019s line, as the prime minister rebuffed Gallant in an effort to keep the focus of the strategic debate on Palestinian entities he deems unacceptable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter the terrible massacre, I ordered the destruction of Hamas,\u201d Netanyahu <a href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/2024-05-15\/ty-article\/.premium\/israels-defense-minister-calls-on-netanyahu-to-reject-military-rule-in-gaza\/0000018f-7ced-d0aa-abbf-feeff9070000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said<\/a> in response to Gallant\u2019s public address, according to <em>Haaretz<\/em>. \u201cIDF fighters and the security forces are fighting for this. As long as Hamas remains, no other actor will run Gaza \u2014 and certainly not the Palestinian Authority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Gallant, for his part, suggested the military victory is all but achieved, a battlefield assessment that would seem to imply that Netanyahu could strike a deal to release the hostages if he had a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/maher-were-lumping-in-russian-people-with-their-government-and-if-they-werent-white-we-would-call-that-racism\/\" title=\"Maher: We're Lumping in Russian People with Their Government, and 'If They Weren't White,' 'We Would Call That Racism'\u00a0\">post-war plan<\/a> that Gallant considers realistic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must dismantle Hamas\u2019s governing capabilities in Gaza,\u201d Gallant said. \u201cThe key to this goal is military action\u00a0and the establishment of a governing alternative in Gaza. In the absence of such an alternative, only two negative options remain: Hamas\u2019s rule in Gaza or Israeli military rule in Gaza. The meaning of indecision is choosing one of the negative options.
