The Pelican Island Causeway Bridge was shut\u2063 down for \u2062safety assessments. Emergency responders, including the U.S. \u2063Coast Guard and local \u200cagencies, are managing the\u200d oil spill. The\u200c incident resulted in road closures and power outages on Pelican Island. No injuries were reported. The bridge connects the north side of Galveston Island just west of the Port of Galveston with the south side of Pelican Island.<\/p>\n<p>Full story: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Y0rXOcGs1n\">https:\/\/t.co\/Y0rXOcGs1n<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/3FD6o3DGuh\">pic.twitter.com\/3FD6o3DGuh<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 KHOU 11 News Houston (@KHOU) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KHOU\/status\/1790795636217917600?\">May 15, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The city of Galveston announced numerous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/zg-relentless-rain-turns-roads-into-rivers-leaving-motorists-stranded-for-hours-in-california\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">road closures<\/a> in the area and said multiple local, state and federal agencies were at the scene.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmergency management officials from the City of Galveston, Texas A&#038;M University at Galveston, and the state \u2013 as well as Galveston fire and police departments, U.S. Coast Guard and Texas Department of Transportation \u2013 are responding to the incident,\u201d the city said in <a href=\"https:\/\/galvestontx.gov\/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=1757\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a news release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Officials in Galveston added:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe collision has resulted in an oil spill in the bay. The U.S. Coast Guard is responding and will determine the extent of the spill, as well as initiate the containment and cleanup processes.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Do you think this is a growing problem?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cEngineers from the Texas Department of Transportation are also en route to inspect the roadway and determine if there is damage. The bridge will remain closed until it is deemed safe to use. Power was temporarily interrupted to Pelican Island, which is home to Texas A&#038;M Galveston.
