They\u2019re not unreasonable requirements, and a couple could even work to Donald Trump\u2019s advantage.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/alx\/status\/1790770919851409430\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">accepted the proposal<\/a>, but he should also insist some of his own conditions are agreed to by Biden and, just as crucially, whoever moderates.<\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s demands are laughably transparent. He wants two debates instead of three because his campaign knows as well as anyone there\u2019s no upside in the rapidly deteriorating president appearing next to the tanned, restless, and ready Trump, who is currently <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/14\/heres-how-the-media-are-lying-right-now-imaginary-chaos-vs-real-chaos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">demolishing Biden<\/a> in surveys of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-gops-newest-midterm-issue-menthols\/\" title=\"The GOP\u2019s Newest Midterm Issue: Menthols?\">swing-state voters<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>He wants no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/10-famous-liberals-whove-made-the-nazi-comparison-but-werent-canceled\/\" title=\"10 Famous Liberals Who\u2019ve Made The \u2018Nazi\u2019 Comparison But Weren\u2019t Canceled\">live audience<\/a> in the room because his campaign knows as well as anyone that Trump remains the unparalleled political performer who thrives in front of a crowd.<\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s most controversial demand is that Trump\u2019s mic be muted when it\u2019s Biden\u2019s allotted time to speak. After all, Biden\u2019s campaign knows that directly engaging the former president is high risk, no reward. Biden wants the same done for his own mic when it\u2019s Trump\u2019s time.<\/p>\n<p>Again, whatever. Trump would stand to benefit from the muted mic agreement anyway. His performances in the two debates with Biden in 2020 were a failure by any honest assessment. His attempt to overwhelm his opponent with what amounted to a bunch of incoherent noise backfired. It reinforced voters\u2019 belief that Trump was chaotic and exhausting at a time when everything was already chaotic and exhausting. <\/p>\n<p>In the coming rematches with Biden \u2014 a diminished and feeble figure loved by no one but Zelensky and defense contractors \u2014 a lot less will be more.<\/p>\n<p>But if Biden wants to overhaul debate format precedent, it shouldn\u2019t be that every change is to his advantage. His CVS receipt-length list of requirements said nothing about who gets to moderate, other than that it should be standard anchors or hosts from one of the big news networks. <\/p>\n<p>Admittedly, Biden has nothing to worry about regardless of who ends up moderating. Even the Fox News-designated moderator of the first 2020 debate, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/1590154\/trump-is-going-to-have-to-fight-the-moderator-next-time-as-hard-he-has-to-fight-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chris Wallace<\/a>, interfered on Biden\u2019s behalf. The corporate media personalities who moderate this year\u2019s debates will do the same whenever they can.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why Trump should insist that if the candidates can\u2019t interrupt each other during their respective turns, the moderators also need to keep their mouths shut during the candidates\u2019 allotted time. As important, moderators should be forbidden from injecting their unnecessary thoughts and opinions (sometimes falsely referred to as \u201cfact-checking\u201d) for the duration of the event. That can wait for their little roundtables afterward. <\/p>\n<p>Oh, and no earpieces for the moderators to get real-time coaching from some scheming producer in the control room, either. The TV director is going to have to run the show from the studio floor.<\/p>\n<p>There are clues as to who will serve as the moderators. CNN on Wednesday <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CNNPR\/status\/1790757195455324413\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a> that it will be hosting one of the debates, meaning that the moderator will likely be <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/09\/24\/jake-tapper-moves-to-primetime-proving-cnns-reputation-is-unsalvageable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the awful Jake Tapper<\/a>, the awful Wolf Blitzer, or the godawful Anderson Cooper, plus perhaps one of the female anchors, probably Woman-of-Color\u2122\ufe0f Abby Phillip. Trump has <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JenniferJJacobs\/status\/1790769496531124526\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">agreed <\/a>to another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mcauliffe-biden-is-not-popular-here-we-have-to-push-through\/\" title=\"McAuliffe: Biden is not popular here, we have to push through\">debate hosted<\/a> by ABC News, where the moderator will likely be either the terrible David Muir or the <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2017\/07\/12\/how-gma-hides-george-stephanopoulos-little-boyish-mini-legs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">terribly short<\/a> George Stephanopoulos, who at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0826888\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">5 feet, 5 inches tall<\/a> may require a booster seat.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever the case, it\u2019s going to be another two-against-one matchup with the odds stacked in Biden\u2019s favor. Trump, along with every other Republican, should at least have a guarantee that there won\u2019t be any more Chris Wallace or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oVoJw62FMJk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Candy Crowley moments<\/a> where the moderator takes liberty to run interference for the Democrat.<\/p>\n<p>No moderator interruptions and no \u201cfact-checking.\u201d Trump should insist upon it \u2014 and if Biden won\u2019t agree, then all mics remain live for the full debate.<\/p>\n<hr><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Joe Biden&#8217;s lengthy debate demands for just two presidential debates reveal his vulnerability, emphasizing his weakness.
