Biden has rejected the \u200cdebate commission&#8217;s proposals, \u2062opting to set his own rules. The Commission on \u200bPresidential Debates has organized such events for leading candidates since\u200d the\u2062 1988 election. Biden&#8217;s campaign has outlined \u200cconcerns\u2063 about the\u2063 proposed debate schedule, format, and rule enforcement.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Joe Biden\">Joe Biden<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3004425\/biden-challenges-trump-two-debates-november-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Joe Biden\">agreed<\/a> to debates with former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Donald Trump\">Donald Trump<\/a> ahead of their rematch in November, but the president rejected proposals from the traditional debate commission in favor of writing his own rules.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission on Presidential Debates has organized debates for the leading presidential candidates ahead of general elections since the 1988 election between George H.W. Bush and Michael Dukakis. <\/p>\n<p>Jen O\u2019Malley Dillon, Biden campaign chairwoman, outlined in a letter to the Commission on Presidential Debates why the president is refusing to go along with its proposed rules, arguing they are \u201cout of step with changes in the structure of our elections and the interests of voters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here are the Biden campaign\u2019s main points for why it wants a different structure for the debates against Trump.<\/p>\n<h2>Timing<\/h2>\n<p>The commission had announced that its three proposed presidential debates would be held on Sept. 16, Oct. 1, and Oct. 9, along with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/campaign-2024-an-early-look-at-the-possible-republican-contenders\/\" title=\"Campaign 2024: An Early Look At The Possible Republican Contenders\">vice presidential debate<\/a> on Sept. 25. O\u2019Malley Dillon argued the debates were too late in the cycle and would be held after early voting had begun in several states, meaning millions of voters may have already cast their ballot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Commission\u2019s failure, yet again, to schedule debates that will be meaningful to all voters \u2014 not just those who cast their ballots late in the fall or on Election Day \u2014 underscores the serious limitations of its outdated approach,\u201d O\u2019Malley Dillon noted in the letter.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden campaign has suggested two presidential debates in June and September, along with a vice presidential debate in July. (Jim Bourg\/Pool via AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>O\u2019Malley Dillon argued the debates should be held in a television studio, similar to the first series of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/neil-patel-the-misinformation-police-are-coming-for-you\/\" title=\"Neil Patel: The Misinformation Police Are Coming for You\">televised presidential debates<\/a> between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon in 1960.<\/p>\n<h2>Enforcement of debate rules<\/h2>\n<p>The Biden campaign also expressed frustration with the commission\u2019s enforcement, or lack of enforcement, of the rules for each candidate.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Malley Dillon accused the commission of being \u201cunable or unwilling to enforce the rules in the 2020 debates\u201d and said it \u201cwas far from \u2014 indeed entirely inconsistent with \u2014 the orderly and informative process the voters deserved in 2020.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/88464\/trump-and-biden-trade-blows-in-acrimonious-starkly-personal-and-chaotic-first-debate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"first\">first<\/a> presidential debate in 2020 was criticized for the lack of control of the candidates by moderator Chris Wallace. The second, and final, debate between the two in 2020 featured the ability for microphones to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/564667\/final-trump-biden-debate-will-feature-muted-mics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"muted\">muted<\/a> in an effort to reduce interruptions and chaos.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of debates organized by the commission, the Biden campaign offered that they be hosted by a broadcast organization that hosted a 2016 GOP primary debate Trump was in and a 2020 Democratic primary debate Biden participated in. The television networks that meet both requirements include CNN, ABC, CBS, and Spanish-language network Telemundo.<\/p>\n<h2>Pushback<\/h2>\n<p>Despite Trump\u2019s quick response agreeing to Biden\u2019s challenge, the president was criticized for his decision to give the debate commission the run-around. <\/p>\n<p>Polling and elections analyst Nate Silver slammed Biden\u2019s reasons for wanting to rewrite the rules, calling the early-voting talking point a \u201cred herring.\u201d By setting its own rules, he said, Biden\u2019s team is broadcasting weakness and torching his position as the \u201cnorms and traditions\u201d candidate.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re confident you\u2019ll win the debates, you\u2019d ask for 2 early debates *in addition* to the 3 late ones. At least as a bargaining position,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NateSilver538\/status\/1790734077261136297\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>wrote<\/a> on X. \u201cYou\u2019re supposed to be the candidate who stands up for norms and traditions and now you\u2019re ducking this tradition?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, the Republican National Committee voted to withdraw from the commission after it refused to make changes the RNC was seeking, and the Trump campaign had criticized the commission for keeping its earliest debate scheduled for mid-September.
