Despite the challenges, historical data \u200cand strong campaign resources hint at a potential Democratic resurgence.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/democrats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Democrats <\/a>have two choices about how to approach the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/2024-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>2024 presidential election<\/a>: panic or patience.<\/p>\n<p>Former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Donald Trump<\/a> leads President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Joe Biden<\/a> in five of six battleground states, according to the latest <em>New York Times<\/em>-Siena College poll. Trump leads in all seven in the <em>RealClearPolitics <\/em>polling average, which also has him ahead of Biden nationally.<\/p>\n<p>If Trump\u2019s national lead holds, it would only be the second time since 1988 that Republicans have won the popular vote. This time, that feat could conceivably be achieved by a former president who was voted out of office four years ago who is still viewed unfavorably by an absolute majority of voters in most polls.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that the race is not only competitive but that Biden is losing,\u00a0and has been losing in many polls for a while now,\u00a0has to give Democrats pause. Trump is running ahead of Republican Senate candidates in swing states like Nevada and Arizona.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/election-2024\/?utm_source=homepage&#038;utm_medium=banner&#038;utm_campaign=iowa_caucus&#038;utm_id=election2024\"><strong>ELECTION 2024: FOLLOW LATEST COVERAGE<\/strong><\/a> <\/p>\n<p><em>New York <\/em>magazine\u2019s Jonathan Chait, a bellwether for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2895228\/liberal-pundits-debate-biden-replacement-scenarios\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>liberal pundit panic<\/a> about Biden\u2019s chances, is back to laying the blame at the feet of the president and his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/campaign-2024-an-early-look-at-the-possible-republican-contenders\/\" title=\"Campaign 2024: An Early Look At The Possible Republican Contenders\">reelection campaign<\/a>. \u201cThe point here is that Democrats have a Joe Biden problem, not a partywide problem,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/opinion\/no-your-pet-issue-is-not-making-biden-lose\/ar-BB1mjFGW?ocid=BingNewsSerp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>writes<\/a>. \u201cRegular, mainstream Democratic candidates are holding up just fine in the purple states.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is where you begin to hear talk about whether Democrats should replace the 81-year-old Biden as the nominee.<\/p>\n<p>There is a case for this being crazy talk, however. Trump\u2019s leads are not big, at least not in most places, and by historical standards should not be insurmountable. Trump is up by 1.2 points nationally. The <em>RealClearPolitics <\/em>average shows him ahead by just 0.6 points in Wisconsin. <\/p>\n<p>Biden and the Democrats have a money advantage over Trump, enhanced by the fact that only one candidate faces staggering legal bills. The Democratic campaign apparatus should be formidable. This is also extremely early in the general election cycle. <\/p>\n<p>Democrats exceeded expectations in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/midterms-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>midterm elections<\/a>. They have added to their coalition higher propensity voters in the Trump era. Biden has dismissed \u201cthe polling data\u201d as having been \u201cwrong all along,\u201d although that was as much a comment about the public\u2019s conclusions about the economy as the accuracy of the polls.<\/p>\n<p>This is an argument for trusting the process and the Biden campaign to methodically erode Trump\u2019s leads in the battleground states in the coming months as voters start paying closer attention. It is a safer bet, these Democrats contend, than trying to force out Biden and Vice President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/kamala-harris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Kamala Harris<\/a> in favor of candidates who did not participate in a primary process the incumbent largely dominated.<\/p>\n<p>A key question is whether a rematch between two familiar candidates will feature the vagaries and vicissitudes of a normal campaign. The race has thus far remained close, and tilted slightly in Trump\u2019s favor, despite a slew of outside forces that might be expected to influence it. Trump\u2019s first criminal trial, featuring salacious testimony, and millions of dollars in Democratic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/advertising\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>advertising <\/a>in battleground states have had a minimal impact.<\/p>\n<p>The other question is whether the fissures in the Democratic coalition that has been showing up in the polls for over two years can be exploited by Republicans, who may need unfamiliar voters to turn out. Some question, based on midterm and special-election results, whether these Democratic cracks are real. <\/p>\n<p>But if disaffected voters don\u2019t show up, or cast their ballots for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/rfk-jr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Robert F. Kennedy Jr.<\/a> instead of Trump, it won\u2019t matter how real the discontent is. Republicans will have once again failed to capitalize on Biden\u2019s broad unpopularity.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s one plausible scenario. The other is that Trump\u2019s leads, which in places like North Carolina, Arizona, and Georgia aren\u2019t all that slim by post-2000 standards, prove resilient. Or that Trump even outperforms his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-rips-mentally-gone-biden-over-vaccines-wont-say-yet-if-hes-running-in-2024\/\" title=\"Trump Rips \u2018Mentally Gone\u2019 Biden Over Vaccines, \u2018Won\u2019t Say Yet\u2019 If He\u2019s Running In 2024\">poll numbers<\/a>, as he did in both 2016 and 2020. <\/p>\n<p>If Biden is still down after the conventions, the panic could become a self-fulfilling prophecy.\u00a0 \u201cThe trajectory remains grim, and one effect of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/born-to-lose-beto-orourke-eyes-trifecta-of-political-failure\/\" title=\"BORN TO LOSE: Beto O\u2019Rourke Eyes Trifecta of Political Failure\">losing campaign<\/a> is that various factions start caring less about helping you win and more about exploiting your expected defeat for their own purposes,\u201d Chait writes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For some progressives, Biden isn\u2019t worth the risk of another Trump term. Other Democrats worry that relying on yet-to-materialize forces to take down Trump is the mistake made by candidates who have lost to him in the past, ranging from Hillary Clinton to a small army of Republican primary opponents.<\/p>\n<p>The Democratic dilemma becomes more stark with each poll showing Biden behind.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Democrats for 2024 must decide: panic or patience?
