Despite appeals for leniency,\u200c Handy \u2064received \u2064a tough sentence while planning to appeal.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><\/p>\n<div class=\"article-content\">\n<p>U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly sentenced a pro-life activist on Tuesday to 57 months in prison and three years supervision for her participation in a peaceful pro-life protest at one the capital city\u2019s most controversial abortion facilities.<\/p>\n<p>Lauren Handy, 30, was one of several members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/paaunow.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising<\/a> (PAAU), a primarily leftist organization with a pro-life streak, who initiated a \u201crescue and protest\u201d at late-term abortionist Cesare Santangelo\u2019s Washington, D.C., facility in October 2020.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-613103417\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-0dbcb9655831fef8c7adca0c4c4f7675 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-0dbcb9655831fef8c7adca0c4c4f7675\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cSome simply kneeled and prayed at Santangelo\u2019s facility, some passed out pro-life literature and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/five-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/white-fright-cnns-chris-cuomo-suggests-pro-life-legislation-motivated-by-racism\/\" title=\"\u2018White Fright\u2019: CNN\u2019s Chris Cuomo Suggests Pro-Life Legislation Motivated By Racism\">pro-lifers<\/a>-found-guilty-of-face-act-violations-for-protesting-at-late-term-abortion-facility\/&#8221; title=&#8221;Five pro-life activists convicted of violating the FACE Act for protesting at a late-term abortion clinic.&#8221;>counseled abortion-minded women<\/a>, and others roped and chained themselves together inside the facility,\u201d Handy\u2019s lawyers at the Thomas More Society <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomasmoresociety.org\/case\/united-states-of-america-v-lauren-handy-et-al\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Handy, PAAU\u2019s director of Activism and Mutual Aid, decided to protest at Santangelo\u2019s facility in particular after she heard him admit on an undercover <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NxOWyumLufA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">video<\/a> that he \u201cwould not help\u201d a baby born alive after a botched abortion. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy belief that was formed after watching the video was if the fetus survived the abortion attempt, they were left to die,\u201d Handy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomasmoresociety.org\/case\/united-states-of-america-v-lauren-handy-et-al\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told the court<\/a> during witness testimony. <\/p>\n<p>Handy was also among those who recovered a box of\u00a0five dead preemie-sized babies outside of Santagelo\u2019s facility. The discovery of the \u201cD.C. Five\u201d should have prompted <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/02\/21\/doj-allegedly-interferes-in-late-term-abortion-investigation-while-biden-campaigns-on-three-trimester-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an investigation<\/a> into Santangelo\u2019s possibly illegal abortion methods. Instead, it put Handy at risk for more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2023\/08\/31\/dc-police-backtrack-say-no-investigation-dc-abortion-clinic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scrutiny from law enforcement<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2023\/08\/30\/dc-police-investigating-abortionist-foggy-bottom-clinic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pro-abortion Democrats<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-72d5654cd7ba84756d067fd420d9f1f7 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-72d5654cd7ba84756d067fd420d9f1f7\"><\/div>\n<p>Nearly two years after the October protest, Biden\u2019s DOJ charged Handy and nine other advocates for life with allegedly violating the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/10\/28\/the-face-act-is-unconstitutional-its-past-time-congress-got-rid-of-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unconstitutional Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act<\/a> and participating in a Conspiracy Against Rights. The defendants faced up to 11 years in federal prison, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/08\/23\/pro-lifers-could-face-11-years-in-prison-for-trying-to-protect-innocents-from-harm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an extreme expansion of the punishment time<\/a> other pro-lifers were dealt. <\/p>\n<p>A Washington, D.C., federal jury convicted Handy on both counts in August 2023. Handy\u2019s lawyers \u201casked the Court to show leniency with a 12-month sentence \u2014 which effectively amounts to time-served\u201d and mentioned her \u201cdeep commitment to non-violence, history of humanitarian work, and dedication to serving the marginalized in society\u201d but to no avail. <\/p>\n<p>So far, Handy\u2019s fellow protestor Jay Smith, who <a href=\"https:\/\/catholicreview.org\/three-more-pro-life-activists-convicted-on-federal-charges-for-blockade-at-abortion-clinic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">took a plea deal<\/a>, is the only defendant in this case thus far who has escaped sentencing with less than one year of jail time. Handy\u2019s lawyers say they plan to appeal her conviction and sentence. <\/p>\n<p>At least one Republican lawmaker has also called for action in the face of the Democrat administration\u2019s lawfare.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-bfe926c23f8ee8ba5dc76b0aa4386244 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-bfe926c23f8ee8ba5dc76b0aa4386244\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s outrageous 57-month sentence for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/progressive-pro-lifers-mom-gets-a-home-visit-from-fbi-karens\/\" title=\"FBI visits home of progressive pro-life activist's mother due to Karens.\">progressive pro-life activist<\/a> is a stark reminder: Biden\u2019s DOJ is fully weaponized against pro-life American citizens, and they are using the FACE Act to do it,\u201d Rep. Chip Roy said in a statement. \u201cHouse Republicans should defund the DOJ weaponization, repeal the FACE Act, and stand up for the freedoms that we campaign on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>President Joe Biden\u2019s Department of Justice has turned a blind eye to the crimes of thousands of men, women, and <a href=\"https:\/\/19thnews.org\/2024\/03\/lgbtq-americans-gaza-israel-protests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">confused<\/a> adults who have spent the better part of a year<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/01\/10\/a-legitimate-justice-system-would-jail-intifada-vandals-not-pro-lifers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> blocking traffic, desecrating monuments<\/a> (including a federal memorial designed to honor U.S. military members), and occupying college campuses.
