Despite immediate medical \u2063attention,\u2062 Lawal did not survive the incident, leaving the boxing\u2062 community mourning his\u2062 loss. Despite prompt medical care, Lawal&#8217;s\u200d passing has left \u2063the boxing\u200d community in deep sorrow.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/news\/\"> News <\/a>    <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/johnathanjones\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span> \u00a0By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/johnathanjones\/%20\"><span>Johnathan Jones<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span> \u00a0May 14, 2024 at 9:42am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>A 29-year-old British fighter died after he collapsed in the ring during his professional boxing debut on Sunday night in the U.K.<\/p>\n<p>Rising middleweight Sherif Lawal took a shot from Portuguese fighter Malam Varelan in the fourth round of a bout at the Harrow Leisure Centre in Greater London.<\/p>\n<p>The fighter was treated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/nba-hall-famer-kareem-abdul-jabbar-rushed-hospital-paramedics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">paramedics<\/a> at the scene and rushed to a hospital, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/boxing\/articles\/c4n11j26rmpo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the BBC<\/a> reported, but he did not survive his injuries.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/boxing\/story\/_\/id\/40138728\/british-middleweight-sherif-lawal-dies-collapsing-pro-debut\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ESPN<\/a> cited media reports that Lawal took a shot to the temple before he went down and never got back up.<\/p>\n<p>No cause of death was immediately available.<\/p>\n<p>The British Boxing Board of Control issued a statement about Lawal\u2019s fatal professional debut on social media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe British Boxing Board of Control sends their condolences to the family of Sherifdeen Lawal following his tragic passing after his Boxing contest on Sunday, 12 May 2024,\u201d the U.K.\u2019s governing body on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-boxing-legend-mike-tyson-scared-death-jake-paul-fight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the sport<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe thoughts of all those involved in Boxing in Great Britain are with them at this difficult time.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"zxx\"><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/wQIUk1fw4T\">pic.twitter.com\/wQIUk1fw4T<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 BBBofC (@BBBofCuk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BBBofCuk\/status\/1790054408639725974?\">May 13, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Warren Boxing Management, which promoted Sunday\u2019s events, also issued a statement about Lawal\u2019s death on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/britney-spears-serious-danger-going-broke-deletes-instagram-account-calling-family\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Instagram<\/a> page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast night, Sherif Lawal was making his debut at a show at Harrow Leisure Centre, in which our boxer Courtney Bennett was scheduled to fight,\u201d the company said in the statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately during Sherif\u2019s fight, he collapsed and despite the best efforts of the paramedics, he was later pronounced dead,\u201d the statement added. \u201cWarren Boxing Management would like to send our condolences to all of Sherif\u2019s family, friends, coaches and all those close to him at this tragic time.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C65_yIqrEvd\/?utm_source=ig_embed&#038;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\"><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to ESPN, Lawal\u2019s fight with Varela was scheduled for six rounds and it was the first on the card.<\/p>\n<p>The remaining fights were canceled after Lawal was taken to the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Varela had not issued a public statement about Lawal\u2019s death as of Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Boxing deaths are uncommon but not unprecedented. Filipino bantamweight boxer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/rising-22-year-old-boxer-unexpectedly-collapses-fight-dies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kenneth Egano<\/a> died in May 2023, days after he was hospitalized following his eighth professional fight.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/boxer-sherif-lawal-dies-knocked-out-professional-debut-london\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CBS News<\/a> noted, Mexican boxer Jeanette Zacarias Zapata died in 2021 at the age of 18 after being knocked out during a fight in Montreal.<\/p>\n<p>Three boxers are known to have died in the ring in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>American boxer Patrick Day suffered a brain injury following a knockout in Chicago and later died.<\/p>\n<p>Boxers Maxim Dadashev, 27, of Russia, and Hugo Alfredo Santillan, 23, of Argentina, also died that year from injuries they sustained in separate fights.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p><b><i>An Important Message from Our Staff:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span>In just a few months, the world is going to change forever.
