The\u2062 Biden administration\u2063 plans to increase tariffs on key Chinese products, emphasizing \u2064fair competition and addressing \u2063China&#8217;s unfair\u2064 practices to bolster American manufacturing and exports.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Joe Biden\">Joe Biden<\/a> is upping the ante in his trade war with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"China\">China<\/a> \u2014 and with former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Donald Trump\">Donald Trump<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/stuartanderson\/2020\/08\/06\/biden-says-he-will-end-trumps-tariffs-on-chinese-made-goods\/?sh=48e93037523a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"opposed\">opposed<\/a> Chinese tariffs during the 2020 election but is now not only matching but exceeding Trump\u2019s tariffs on the world\u2019s second-biggest economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe president is taking important enforcement action to raise tariffs in key sectors under Section 301 of our trade laws that will make sure that historic investments in jobs spurred by President Biden\u2019s actions are not undercut by a flood of unfairly underpriced exports from China,\u201d National Economic Council Director Lael Brainard said Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/biden-administration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Biden administration\">Biden administration<\/a> has announced it will raise tariffs on certain Chinese steel and aluminum products from 7.25% to 25% this year, on electric vehicles from 25% to 100%, and on semiconductors from 25% to 50% next year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerican workers and businesses can outcompete anyone \u2014 as long as they have fair competition,\u201d reads a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/green-energy-industry-admits-it-needs-cheap-chinese-goods-to-survive\/\" title=\"Green Energy Industry Admits It Needs Cheap Chinese Goods To Survive\">fact sheet announcing<\/a> the changes. \u201cBut for too long, China\u2019s government has used unfair, non-market practices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those changes, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/white-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"White House\">White House<\/a> says, have led to Chinese firms controlling up to 90% of global production for some goods. The administration says the tariffs, in addition to legislation like the $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill Biden signed in 2021, will succeed where Trump\u2019s tariffs did not.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe previous administration\u2019s phase one trade deal with China did not deliver on its promises to increase exports, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/former-democrat-running-in-pa-republican-primary-for-u-s-house-seat-against-former-trump-official\/\" title=\"Former Democrat Running in PA Republican Primary for U.S. House Seat Against Former Trump Official\">create manufacturing jobs<\/a> here in America, or to end China\u2019s unfair practices,\u201d Brainard said.<\/p>\n<p>On that point, team Biden may be treading a thin line as it argues its tariffs will boost American manufacturing while also downplaying Trump\u2019s. This is especially perilous as Biden has mostly kept Trump\u2019s existing tariffs in place after criticizing them on the 2020 campaign trail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn July of 2019, then-candidate Biden said that tariffs on China are abusive policy,\u201d a reporter asked during Monday\u2019s White House press briefing. \u201cHas the president changed his mind and now believes tariffs work?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In response, press secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/karine-jean-pierre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Karine Jean-Pierre\">Karine Jean-Pierre<\/a> said the administration has always had concerns about China\u2019s trade practices while also charging that the \u201clast administration\u201d did a trade deal with China that \u201cfailed to increase American exports or boost manufacturing.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Trump\u2019s campaign and his allies argue, however, that Biden is following the former president\u2019s lead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter spending much of his presidency fighting to undo President Trump\u2019s trade policies, Biden\u2019s failure to protect American manufacturers is coming back to haunt his administration, and hard-working Americans know it\u2019s too little too late,\u201d Trump campaign spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said. \u201cThe forgotten men and women know President Trump is the only one who has been and will be tough on China.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Whatley blasted Biden last month when the president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/2970612\/trade-war-why-biden-and-trump-are-working-to-out-tariff-each-other\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"hinted\">hinted<\/a> at new Chinese tariffs, saying, \u201cAmericans deserve leadership, not lip service \u2014 and it\u2019s clear that we need President Trump back in office to deliver stronger trade deals that put America First.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Biden and Trump are heavily focused on the manufacturing-heavy states of Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania in this fall\u2019s presidential election, betting that industrial policy can win them favor.<\/p>\n<p>China has made strides in the growing field of electric vehicles, offering a small electric vehicle that was <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-byd-auto-seagull-auto-ev-cae20c92432b74e95c234d93ec1df400\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"praised\">praised<\/a> by the <em>Associated Press <\/em>for as little as $10,000 brand new. But that vehicle would cost at least twice as much once Biden\u2019s tariffs take effect.<\/p>\n<p>The idea is to slow China\u2019s march into the sector, allowing U.S.-based companies a chance to develop competing products. <\/p>\n<p>Biden also says that China can sell its product at a loss due to heavy government subsidies, creating an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/5-times-transgender-athletes-dominated-womens-sports\/\" title=\"5 Times Transgender Athletes Dominated Women\u2019s Sports\">unfair playing field<\/a> for American firms. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) has even called for an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2963238\/vulnerable-senate-democrat-calls-for-outright-ban-on-chinese-electric-vehicles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"outright ban\">outright ban<\/a> on Chinese EVs, citing data and privacy concerns.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic strategist Brad Bannon praised the moves, saying they make sense from a practical and political standpoint.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will certainly help the industrial midwest develop new technologies and new jobs, which is a very good thing,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd obviously, when we\u2019re talking about Wisconsin, western Pennsylvania, and Michigan, we\u2019re talking about battleground states. So it\u2019s good policy and good politics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some of the tariffs will hit other sectors, including medical equipment, which will see rates on syringes and needles rise from 0% to 50% this year, while face mask duties will jump from 7.5% to 25%.
