Katie Hobbs&#8217; repeal earlier this month. \u200dAttorney General \u2064Kris \u200bMayes, a Democrat, can now appeal the ruling to \u200bthe U.S. Supreme Court. Mayes\u200b expressed disagreement with the decision and aims to safeguard \u2062doctors&#8217; autonomy in providing \u200bpatient care. The Arizona Supreme Court delayed implementing a nearly \u200ccomplete abortion ban \u200bfrom 1864 due to Governor\u2062 Katie Hobbs&#8217; recent \u2062repeal. Attorney General Kris\u200d Mayes, a Democrat,\u2064 has the\u2062 opportunity to\u2063 challenge this decision at the U.S. Supreme Court. Mayes disagrees with the ruling\u2062 and \u2064seeks to\u200c protect doctors&#8217; independence \u200din delivering patient care.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/arizona\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Arizona<\/a> Supreme Court delayed the reinforcement of an 1864 near-total <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>abortion<\/a> ban after Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/katie-hobbs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Katie Hobbs <\/a>(D-AZ) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/2989249\/arizona-governor-repeals-abortion-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>signed a repeal<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/taliban-returns-to-horrific-violence-after-biden-admin-praised-them-as-professional-and-businesslike\/\" title=\"Taliban Returns To Horrific Violence After Biden Admin Praised Them As \u2018Professional And Businesslike\u2019\">ban earlier<\/a> this month.<\/p>\n<p>The ruling allows Attorney General Kris Mayes, a Democrat, to appeal the Arizona Supreme Court\u2019s ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI continue to believe this case was wrongly decided, and there are issues that merit additional judicial review,\u201d Mayes said in a statement. \u201cI will do everything I can to ensure that doctors can provide medical care for their patients according to their best judgment, not the beliefs of the men elected to the territorial legislature 160 years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mayes\u2019s office had asked for the delay in order to figure out its next course of action with the appeal. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/breaking-ag-barr-authorizes-federal-prosecutors-to-pursue-substantial-allegations-of-voting-irregularities-before-2020-election-is-certified\/\" title=\"BREAKING: AG Barr Authorizes Federal Prosecutors to Pursue \"Substantial Allegations\" of Voting Irregularities Before 2020 Election is Certified\">attorney general<\/a> said the 90-day stay will allow her office to \u201cconsider the best legal course of action to take from here, including a potential petition for certiorari to the U.S. Supreme Court.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the state legislature repealed the Civil War-era abortion ban, there was still going to be a period of time this summer when abortion would be banned because Arizona law requires that new bills signed into law not go into effect until 90 days after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/minneapolis-prosecutor-calls-for-prohibiting-police-traffic-stops-for-non-safety-related-infractions\/\" title=\"Minneapolis Prosecutor Calls for Prohibiting Police Traffic Stops for \u2018Non-Safety-Related Infractions\u2019\">legislature adjourns<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The ruling cleared up confusion about a timeline as it states that the ban cannot go into effect until Aug. 12, which was the time when the legislation was set to go into effect.<\/p>\n<p>The abortion ban will likely not go into effect in Arizona, although that depends on when the Arizona legislature adjourns for the session.<\/p>\n<p>The repeal signed into law this month reverted the state back to a 2022 abortion law, which bans abortions after 15 weeks with no exceptions for rape or incest. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>An abortion <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Arizona_Right_to_Abortion_Initiative_(2024)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>referendum<\/a> will still be on the ballot for Arizona voters this November, which would create a \u201cfundamental right to abortion\u201d in the state constitution.
