Marshall highlighted Democrats&#8217; shift\u2062 in labeling\u2063 populism negatively, contrasting \u2062it with\u200c former President Obama&#8217;s positive stance. Nancy Pelosi\u2019s (D-CA) argument claiming that populism was \u201ca threat to democracy,\u201d saying that the true threat to democracy was an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/florida-governor-ron-desantis-hints-at-timeline-for-when-he-may-make-presidential-announcement\/\" title=\"Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Hints At Timeline For When He May Make Presidential Announcement\">elite ruling class<\/a> that looked down on instead of working for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-year-of-living-fearfully\/\" title=\"The Year of Living Fearfully\">regular people<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VW8SnMRhExA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pelosi spoke<\/a> at Oxford Union in late April, arguing that \u201cpopulism\u201d was synonymous with \u201cethno-nationalism\u201d and \u201cisolationism\u201d and so-called \u201cpopulists\u201d took advantage of the people once they reached positions of power. She went on to say that some Americans \u2014 \u201cpoor souls who are looking for some answers\u201d \u2014 were reluctant to accept the answers Democrats provided because their views on \u201cguns, gays, [and] God\u201d distorted their perception.<\/p>\n<p>Once she was finished, Marshall offered his take on the situation, and he began with a breakdown of the way Democrats had slowly changed the meaning of the word \u201cpopulism\u201d \u2014 from a positive when former President Barack Obama claimed it to a negative when they applied it to former President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Nancy Pelosi did not like what I had to say\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Populism is not a threat to democracy.<\/p>\n<p>Democrat elites like her are.<\/p>\n<p>Watch my full Oxford Union speech from the debate with her: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ZNm8maNZjy\">pic.twitter.com\/ZNm8maNZjy<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Winston Marshall (@MrWinMarshall) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MrWinMarshall\/status\/1788965604096950381?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 10, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Marshall explained that as recently as 2016, Obama had vocally objected to Trump being called a populist, arguing that he did not care about working people and claiming the \u201cpopulist\u201d mantle for himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf anything, Obama argued that he was the populist. If anything, Obama argued that Bernie was the populist,\u201d he said. \u201cSomething curious happens. If you watch Obama\u2019s speeches after that point, more and more recently, he uses the word \u2018populist\u2019 interchangeably with \u2018strong man,\u2019 \u2018authoritarian.\u2019 The word changes meaning. It becomes a negative, a pejorative, a slur.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPopulism\u2019 has become a word used synonymously with \u2018racist.\u2019 We\u2019ve heard \u2018ethno-nationalist,\u2019 we have \u2018bigot,\u2019 we have \u2018hillbilly,\u2019 \u2018redneck,\u2019 we have \u2018deplorable,\u2019\u201d Marshall said, noting that Pelosi had even called it \u201ca threat to democracy\u201d itself. \u201cElites use it to show their contempt for ordinary people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marshall briefly mentioned the Capitol riot that took place on January 6, 2021, calling it a \u201cdark day\u201d in America\u2019s history \u2014 but then he argued that there were other days that should be viewed through the same lens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sure Congresswoman Pelosi will agree that the entire month of June 2020, when the federal courthouse in Portland, Oregon, was under siege and under insurrection by radical progressives, those, too, were dark days for America,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Pelosi objected then, raising her hand and asserting that there could be no comparison and claiming that Trump had incited an insurrection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy point, though, is that all political movements are susceptible to violence and, indeed, insurrection. Populism is not a threat to democracy. Populism is democracy. And why else have universal suffrage if not to keep elites in check?\u201d Marshall said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, particularly in America, the globalist left have become the establishment,\u201d he continued. \u201cI suppose for Mrs. Pelosi to have taken this side of the argument, she\u2019d be arguing herself out of a job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pelosi interjected once more during Marshall\u2019s speech to insist that the 2016 presidential election \u2014 which former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton lost to Trump \u2014 had been \u201chijacked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former Mumford &amp; Sons banjoist, Winston Marshall, dismantled Rep.
