Amazon acquired Zoox in 2020 for over\u2064 $1 billion, expanding its autonomous vehicle capabilities.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/news\/\">  News <\/a>   <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/ap-reports\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/ap-reports\/%20\"><span>The Associated Press<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   May 13, 2024 at 12:22pm <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>Amazon\u2019s self-driving robotaxi unit is being investigated by the U.S. government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/just-trust-google-california-court-rules-waymo-can-keep-autonomous-vehicle-emergency-protocols-secret\/\" title=\"Just Trust Google: California Court Rules Waymo Can Keep Autonomous Vehicle Emergency Protocols Secret\">highway safety agency<\/a> after two of its vehicles braked suddenly and were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/more-than-20-injured-after-trolley-collision-in-boston-mass\/\" title=\"More than 20 injured after trolley collision in Boston, Mass.\">rear-ended<\/a> by motorcyclists.<\/p>\n<p>The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in <a href=\"https:\/\/static.nhtsa.gov\/odi\/inv\/2024\/INOA-PE24015-12348.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">documents posted on its website Monday<\/a> it will evaluate the automated driving system developed by Zoox.<\/p>\n<p>Both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/school-bus-crashes-driver-suffers-medical-emergency-multiple-students-injured\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crashes<\/a> involved Toyota Highlander SUVs with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/toyota-supplier-densos-q1-profit-tumbles-41-misses-view\/\" title=\"Toyota supplier Denso\u2019s Q1 profit tumbles 41%, misses view\">autonomous driving technology<\/a>. They happened during daytime hours, and the agency confirmed that each of the Amazon vehicles was operating in autonomous mode leading up to the crashes. In one crash a motorcyclist suffered minor injuries, and a Zoox driver reported minor injuries in the other, according to reports. Both happened last month, one in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/progressive-utopia-san-francisco-program-buys-alcohol-homeless-alcoholics-improve-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">San Francisco<\/a> and the other in Spring Valley, Nevada.<\/p>\n<p>The agency said the probe will focus on the performance of the company\u2019s automated driving system during the crashes, as well as how it behaves in crosswalks around pedestrians and other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/micro-mobility-revolution-races-ahead-as-policymakers-and-police-try-to-keep-up\/\" title=\"Micro Mobility Revolution Races Ahead, as Policymakers and Police Try to Keep Up\">vulnerable road users<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Zoox said it is committed to working with NHTSA to answer its questions. \u201cTransparency and collaboration with regulators is of utmost importance,\u201d the company said. Zoox said the vehicles had human safety drivers on board.<\/p>\n<p>Zoox reported the crashes under an order to automated vehicle companies issued in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon acquired Zoox in June 2020 for a price that analysts pegged at over $1 billion. In 2023 the Foster City, California, company said one of its funky-looking four-person shuttles autonomously carried employees on public roads on a mile-long route between two Zoox buildings.<\/p>\n<p>The company has launched a shuttle service exclusively for its employees. Analysts say they expect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/hit-new-amazon-prime-series-surprisingly-good-libs-complaining-isnt-gay-enough\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon<\/a> to use the Zoox system for autonomous deliveries.<\/p>\n<p>Zoox shuttles don\u2019t have a steering wheel or pedals. The carriage-style interior of the vehicle has two benches that face each other. It measures just under 12 feet long, about a foot shorter than a standard Mini Cooper. It is capable of going up to 75 mph, although it started running on public roads at up to 35 mph, the company said.<\/p>\n<p>Zoox already was under investigation by NHTSA.
