The latest allegation centers on the Sabina Shoal, also known as Escoda Shoal \u2014 an area \u201cjust 75 nautical miles from the coast of Palawan\u201d where Philippine Coast Guard officials say they have found deposits of crushed coral, consistent with China\u2019s previous island-building operations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere they are just getting started: So if we say that the dumping of corals in Sandy Cay has allowed [China] to expand the land area, surface area as an artificial island, then most likely, if we don\u2019t monitor and guard against this, perhaps in the coming months, we could be surprised that there would be large man-made islands in Sabina Shoal,\u201d Philippine Coast Guard spokesman\u00a0Jay Tarriela <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmanetwork.com\/news\/topstories\/nation\/906439\/pcg-dumping-of-crushed-corals-may-be-preps-for-china-island-building-in-escoda-shoal\/story\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said<\/a> Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>China dismissed the charge as a \u201csheer rumor\u201d by Philippine officials. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Philippines has repeatedly spread rumors, deliberately vilified China, and tried to mislead the international community,\u201d Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said Monday. \u201cNone of those attempts will succeed. China urges the Philippines to stop making irresponsible remarks, face up to the facts, and return to the right track of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/china-threatens-more-clashes-after-damaging-philippine-vessel\/\" title=\"China threatens more clashes after damaging Philippine vessel\">properly handling maritime disputes<\/a> through negotiation and consultation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Philippine officials have established a rotating deployment of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/get-the-f-out-philippines-foreign-minister-warns-china-on-south-china-sea\/\" title=\"\u2018Get The F*** Out\u2019: Philippines\u2019 Foreign Minister Warns China On South China Sea\">coast guard vessels<\/a> in the area, which Tarriela said was necessitated by a \u201cswarm\u201d of Chinese military, maritime militia, and coast guard vessels that have tried to stymie Manila\u2019s efforts to monitor their activities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe mere fact that the Chinese Coast Guard, the PLA Navy vessels, the PLA Navy helicopter is also restricting the Philippine Coast Guard in monitoring [means] they must be hiding something,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmanetwork.com\/news\/topstories\/nation\/906439\/pcg-dumping-of-crushed-corals-may-be-preps-for-china-island-building-in-escoda-shoal\/story\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said<\/a> Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s move to control the South China Sea in recent years has converted the vast waterway into one of the most fraught potential hot spots in the world. Sabina Shoal is part of the Spratly Islands, where Chinese General Secretary Xi Jinping\u2019s regime has built seven other artificial islands and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/china-says-it-warned-away-u-s-warship-in-south-china-sea-u-s-denies\/\" title=\"China Says It Warned Away U.S. Warship in South China Sea, U.S. Denies\">established military outposts<\/a> on at least three. Sabina Shoal would be the closest yet to the major Philippine islands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are alarmed by this,\u201d Malaya <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfa.org\/english\/news\/southchinasea\/china-scs-island-building-05132024043146.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"said\">said<\/a> Monday. \u201cThese were crushed corals, and it was obvious that they came from another place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The perceived attempt at expansion could provide grounds for the Philippine Department of Justice to bring a new suit in international court, according to a prominent former jurist.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should file a case now. The DOJ has been preparing a case against China precisely for the damage to the marine environment in Escoda Shoal and Rozul Reef,\u201d former Supreme Court Justice\u00a0Antonio\u00a0T.\u00a0Carpio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Rm_28UYo458\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>told<\/a> ABS-CBN, a Philippine broadcaster. \u201cWe should file that to give attention, to focus [on] this illegal island-building by China \u2014 put this on the world agenda. It\u2019s important that we continue filing, piling one arbitral award over the other, because the world will rally around any arbitral award.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was a reference to a 2016 arbitral award in favor of the Philippines, which filed a lawsuit in The Hague to challenge China\u2019s claim to sovereignty in the South China Sea. Chinese officials have dismissed that ruling as \u201cnull and void,\u201d but a regional expert backed by the Chinese Foreign Ministry acknowledged in April that it has had a \u201cnegative impact\u201d on China\u2019s position.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe 2016 arbitration ruling has already had a negative impact that can hardly be fully erased, but it\u2019s very important for China to stop the Philippines from going to a second arbitration,\u201d Dr. Wu Shicun, the founding president of a Chinese Foreign Ministry-affiliated think tank called the National Institute for South China Sea Studies, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/world\/2985758\/philippines-condemns-china-barbaric-confrontation-coast-guard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said<\/a> last month.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Philippine patrols have deterred China from continuing its alleged island-building at Sabina Shoal, according to Tarriela.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChina does not want to get caught,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmanetwork.com\/news\/topstories\/nation\/906605\/pcg-says-it-will-block-china-reclamation-at-escoda-shoal\/story\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Philippine officials report China starting construction of more &#8220;large man-made islands&#8221; in the South China Sea.
