Cohen&#8217;s testimony strengthens the\u2062 case, while defense emphasizes Trump&#8217;s concern for Melania.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Michael Cohen testified on Monday in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/new-york\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New York<\/a> about the hush money agreement he reached with porn star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/stormy-daniels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stormy Daniels<\/a> in 2016, claiming the underlying motivation for the agreement was to help former President Donald Trump\u2019s campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Cohen, Trump\u2019s then-attorney, said the former president \u201cwasn\u2019t even thinking about Melania,\u201d his wife, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/politics\/live-news\/trump-hush-money-trial-05-13-24\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reports<\/a> from the courtroom by CNN.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was all about the campaign,\u201d Cohen added.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>Michael Cohen leaves his apartment building on his way to Manhattan criminal court, Monday, May 13, 2024, in New York. (AP Photo\/Julia Nikhinson)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Cohen\u2019s remarks came a couple hours into his testimony in Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/u-s-whistleblower-edward-snowdens-wife-shares-photos-of-their-new-son\/\" title=\"U.S. whistleblower Edward Snowden\u2019s wife shares photos of their new son\">criminal trial<\/a>. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, an elected Democrat, has accused Trump of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/she-claimed-her-ex-husband-a-nasa-employee-sent-her-threatening-messages-it-turns-out-she-faked-them\/\" title=\"She Claimed Her Ex-Husband, A NASA Employee, Sent Her Threatening Messages. It Turns Out She Faked Them.\">falsifying records<\/a> of a payment Cohen made to Daniels as part of the hush money agreement.<\/p>\n<p>However, to prove Trump committed felonies, Bragg must convince the jury that Trump conspired with Cohen to issue the payment and that Trump knowingly violated election laws. While Cohen saying Trump was concerned with his campaign bolsters Bragg\u2019s case, defense attorneys have continued to garner testimony from witnesses who spoke to how concerned Trump also was with his wife Melania\u2019s opinion.<\/p>\n<p>Cohen, who became known as Trump\u2019s \u201cfixer,\u201d was the one to negotiate a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/white-house-releases-list-of-president-trumps-accomplishments-and-it-is-historic\/\" title=\"White House Releases List of President Trump\u2019s Accomplishments \u2013  And It Is Historic!\">settlement agreement<\/a> with Daniels\u2019s then-attorney Keith Davidson. The agreement involved Cohen paying Daniels $130,000 so that Daniels would stay quiet about an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ghislaine-maxwell-watched-epstein-have-sex-with-14-year-old-victim-participated-in-sex-encounters-testimony\/\" title=\"Ghislaine Maxwell Watched Epstein Have Sex With 14-Year-Old Victim, Participated In Sex Encounters: Testimony\">alleged sexual encounter<\/a> she had with Trump 10 years prior.<\/p>\n<p>Cohen\u2019s testimony provided the jury with the most direct account of what Trump\u2019s intentions were when the Daniels scandal threatened to emerge weeks before the election.<\/p>\n<p>Cohen said Trump was mad at him when Cohen first informed him that Daniels was threatening to go public with her story.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust take care of it,\u201d Cohen recalled Trump telling him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen are going to hate me. \u2026 Guys may think it\u2019s cool, but this is going to be a disaster for the campaign,\u201d Trump said, according to Cohen.<\/p>\n<p>Cohen later recalled Trump urging him to delay paying Daniels while Cohen was working out the settlement agreement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want you to just push it out as long as you can. Just get past the election, because if I win, it will have no relevance because I\u2019m president. And if I lose, I don\u2019t even care,\u201d Trump said, according to Cohen.<\/p>\n<p>Cohen wired Daniels\u2019s attorney Davidson the payment less than two weeks before the election, and the payment included a description: \u201cretainer.\u201d Trump reimbursed Cohen through a payment plan beginning in January. The Department of Justice declined to prosecute Trump over the matter.<\/p>\n<p>Defense attorneys have not yet cross-examined Cohen, who has been billed as Bragg\u2019s star witness.
