The court now has a 4-3 liberal majority, meaning that there is the potential for the 2022 ruling \u2014 when the court had a 4-3 conservative majority \u2014 to be overturned ahead of the November election. The decision will be closely watched given the stakes of the coming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>election<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats have been pushing hard to overturn the 2022 ruling, which limited the use of absentee ballot drop boxes solely to the offices of election clerks. Former President Donald Trump has falsely claimed that the widespread use of ballot drop boxes in 2020 led to voter fraud.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Republicans and other conservative groups have been pushing for the 2022 ruling to be upheld, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/elections\/wisconsin-supreme-court-ballot-drop-boxes-rcna151422\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>filing<\/a> several briefs with the state\u2019s Supreme Court over the matter, according to NBC News.<\/p>\n<p>Brian Schimming, chairman of the Wisconsin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/GOP\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>GOP<\/a>, questioned the security of such drop boxes and said their re-expanded use could lead to \u201cthe possibility for hijinks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not hostile to looking at things differently,\u201d Schimming said, \u201cbut we\u2019re six months away\u201d from the election, and \u201cwe have a Supreme Court who feels as though they\u2019re the second Legislature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Jay Heck, the executive director of Common Cause Wisconsin, said that more drop boxes would make voting accessible for more people in the Badger State.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite worries and claims by election deniers and conspiracy theorists, drop boxes were not used for any nefarious purpose like they\u2019ve claimed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Wisconsin is a key state in the battle for both the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/White-House\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>White House<\/a> and over who will control the U.S. Senate.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Trump won Wisconsin by less than 1%, or about 23,000 votes, back in 2016, while President Joe Biden won the state by an even more narrow margin of just over 20,000 votes in 2020. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/finance-and-economy\/2956070\/wisconsin-senate-eric-hovde-bipartisan-commission-debt-trap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>facing a challenge<\/a> from Republican businessman Eric Hovde.
