State variances in \u200dincome benchmarks underscore the dilemmas confronting individuals striving to meet the evolving criteria \u200bfor middle-class classification.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/news\/\">  News <\/a>   <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/russdavis\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/russdavis\/%20\"><span>Jack Davis<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   May 11, 2024 at 2:41pm <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>Staying in the middle class takes a lot of work, according to a new analysis.<\/p>\n<p>A look at the numbers from the website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gobankingrates.com\/money\/economy\/how-much-definition-of-middle-class-has-changed-in-every-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GOBankingRates.com<\/a> found that it took a nearly 42 percent increase in income to remain in the middle class from 2012, the midpoint of the Obama administration, to 2022, the middle of the Biden administration.<\/p>\n<p>The site published a state-by-state listing of what it takes to be in the middle class, defining the term as people with an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/bidenomics-killing-american-dream-owning-home-nationwide-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">income<\/a> no less than two-thirds of the median income and no more than double that figure.<\/p>\n<p>Although the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/heres-how-the-gops-stimulus-package-compares-to-bidens\/\" title=\"Here\u2019s How the GOP\u2019s Stimulus Package Compares to Biden\u2019s\">national minimum<\/a> to be in the middle class was $50,099 as of 2022, the numbers vary widely. For example, a Mississippi household earning $35,323 is considered middle class. In Maryland, however, the qualifying income is $65,641, according to the site\u2019s calculations.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The middle class is shrinking. In 1971, 61% of American households were considered to be middle class. That number has dropped to 50% three decades later, a Pew Research found.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe creation of the middle class was based on factories and jobs.\u201d Grant Cardone told GOBankingRates.\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/uZIXcPAAEU\">pic.twitter.com\/uZIXcPAAEU<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Grant Cardone (@GrantCardone) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GrantCardone\/status\/1764132456242769996?\">March 3, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Over the decade-long period, Alaska had the smallest increase in income to stay in the middle class at almost 23 percent.<\/p>\n<p>In Oregon, however, the bar to call oneself in the middle class rose by over 53 percent.<\/p>\n<p>A report from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/financial-edge\/0912\/which-income-class-are-you.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Investopedia<\/a> published in February said the middle class is shrinking, equating middle class with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/novavax-to-submit-covid-19-vaccine-to-fda-for-approval\/\" title=\"Novavax to submit COVID-19 vaccine to FDA for approval\">middle income<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That meant annual incomes of between $30,000 and $90,000 per year for single Americans, as well as $42,430 to $127,300 for a couple and $67,100 to $201,270 for a family of four.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-conversation=\"none\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">What? The economy has already crashed, and it has not finished crashing either. The middle class is shrinking again, as opposed to expanding during the Trump era. Biden is returning to the Obama era, in which the middle class was decimated, and growth was slowed to a crawl: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/R3juAgj3yh\">pic.twitter.com\/R3juAgj3yh<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Jatslo (@Jatslo) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Jatslo\/status\/1619433251998941185?\">January 28, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>As of 2021, the report said 50 percent of Americans were in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/bidens-energy-secretary-poor-people-middle-class-can-beat-inflation-buying-solar-panels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">middle class,<\/a> a drop from 1971 data that put the figure at 61 percent.<\/p>\n<p>A study by <a href=\"https:\/\/smartasset.com\/data-studies\/middle-class-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SmartAsset<\/a> found that in a large American city, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wayne-allyn-root-what-is-ultra-biden-by-the-way-im-proud-to-be-ultra-mega-maga\/\" title=\"Wayne Allyn Root: What is \u201cUltra Biden?\u201d By the Way, I\u2019m Proud to Be \u201cUltra Mega MAGA\u201d\">middle-class income<\/a> can fall anywhere between $52,000 and $155,000.<\/p>\n<p>That analysis listed New Jersey, with a minimum middle class income of at least $64,224, as the state with the highest income needed to be in the middle class, followed by Maryland at $63,321 and Massachusetts at $62,986.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Do you consider yourself middle class?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>At the other end comes Mississippi, where $35,142 is required to be in the middle class. Mississippi is followed by West Virginia at $36,216 and Louisiana at $36,940 as the states with the lowest incomes necessary to be middle class.<\/p>\n<p>Some cities have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/biden-considering-dem-plan-cut-even-middle-class-next-stimulus-checks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sky-high upper limits<\/a> for placement in the middle class. For example, in Sunnyvale, California, a household earning $339,562 is at the upper bound of middle class income, followed by Fremont, California; San Mateo, California; Santa Clara, California; Bellevue, Washington and Highlands Ranch, Colorado.<\/p>\n<p>On the low end, there is Detroit, where a household making $24,299 would be middle class.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p><b><i>A Note from Our Deputy Managing Editor:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span>\u201cWe don\u2019t even know if an election will be held in 2024.\u201d Those 12 words have been stuck in my head since I first read them. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Former Lt.
