Shannon \u200bSmith-Bernardin defends the program&#8217;s purpose.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p>San Francisco is spending around $5 million a year to give vodka shots and glasses of beer to homeless people with severe alcohol addiction in an effort to cut down on calls to police and hospital stays, The San Francisco Chronicle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/politics\/article\/sf-free-alcohol-homeless-19446850.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The city\u2019s \u201cmanaged alcohol program\u201d started during the COVID pandemic, but came under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-white-house-changes-tone-upholds-president-trumps-space-force\/\" title=\"Biden White House changes tone, upholds President Trump\u2019s Space Force\">fire earlier<\/a> this week after Adam Nathan, the chair of the Salvation Army San Francisco Advisory Board, posted a thread on X, saying he \u201cstumbled upon the building where they have this program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe location is an old hotel in SOMA,\u201d Nathan wrote. \u201cInside the lobby, they had \u2026 kegs set up to taps where they were basically giving out free beer to the homeless who\u2019ve been identified with AUD (Alcohol Use Disorder).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan said that while \u201csome limited studies\u201d on the strategy have shown \u201csome promise,\u201d he\u2019s concerned about the amount of money the city is spending on the program and the way the program is set up, adding, \u201cpeople in the program just walk in and grab a beer, and then another one. The city\u2019s Department of Public Health says the program has served 55 clients and has grown from 10 beds to 20 beds, located in a former hotel in the Tenderloin district, an area known for its high rates of homelessness and drug use.<\/p>\n<p>Shannon Smith-Bernardin, a UCSF School of Nursing professor who helped create the controversial program, argued that the goal of the program is to stabilize the alcohol use of the homeless addicts \u201cso they\u2019re not binge drinking or stopping drinking and having seizures,\u201d according to the Chronicle. The San Francisco Fire Department said the program \u201chas proven to be an incredibly impactful intervention\u201d at reducing emergency service use for a \u201csmall but highly vulnerable population.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a 2020 article explaining the program, the California Health Care Foundation wrote, \u201cEstablished in countries such as Canada and Australia, a managed alcohol program is usually administered by a nurse and trained support staff in a facility such as a homeless shelter or a transitional or permanent home, and is one method to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fda-will-no-longer-require-in-person-doctor-visits-for-abortion-pill\/\" title=\"FDA Will No Longer Require In-Person Doctor Visits for Abortion Pill\">minimize harm<\/a> for those with alcohol use disorder,\u201d Fox News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/san-francisco-buys-vodka-shots-homeless-alcoholics-taxpayer-funded-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy prescribing limited quantities of alcohol, the model aims to prevent potentially life-threatening effects of alcohol withdrawal, such as seizures and injuries,\u201d the California Health Care Foundation added.<\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/onelink.to\/dwapp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-describedby=\"sk-tooltip-9096\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/onelink.to\/dwapp&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1700760801843000&#038;usg=AOvVaw2PQrVSrJfhxNb4LcARqniG\">CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Other \u201charm reduction\u201d programs run by the city for drug addicts have been criticized, including by Democratic Mayor London Breed who said in February that they are \u201cnot reducing the harm\u201d and \u201cmaking things far worse.\u201d A man who is in recovery for heroin addiction also slammed \u201charm reduction\u201d programs, telling the Chronicle, \u201cAre we just going to manage people\u2019s addictions with our taxpayer dollars in perpetuity forever?
