Negotiations for a wage increase have been ongoing for five months \u2062without resolution.\u200d The\u2064 union demands fair treatment and respect, setting up a 24\/7 picket outside the hotel. The strike coincides with Mother&#8217;s Day celebrations for Latinos from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, \u2063and Belize and aligns with \u2064the U.S. holiday. Virgin Hotels denied the union&#8217;s claim of canceling a negotiation meeting scheduled for May 2.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/unions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Culinary Workers Union<\/a> began its strike against <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/hotel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Virgin Hotels<\/a> Las Vegas Friday and will continue through Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Some 700 union workers went on strike after their contract expired almost a year ago. Their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/union\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>union<\/a> has been in negotiations with Virgin Hotels for five months without an agreement on a raise for workers\u2019 wages. The hotel surpassed one strike deadline before missing the most recent deadline, prompting the strike.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorkers need a raise and have been clear on what they deserve, but the company has been coming to the table with zeros for wages,\u201d Union Secretary-Treasurer Ted Pappageorge said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.culinaryunion226.org\/news\/press\/strike-alert-virgin-las-vegas-casino-on-strike\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"statement\">statement<\/a>. \u201cCulinary Union calls on Virgin Las Vegas to stop treating their workers as second-class, respect them, and agree that they are worth more than zero. Every casino on the Las Vegas Strip and Downtown Las Vegas has already settled a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/coca-cola-under-fire-for-legally-questionable-racial-quota-system\/\" title=\"Coca-Cola Under Fire for Legally Questionable Racial Quota System\">fair contract<\/a> and so this company is a total outlier and it\u2019s disrespectful to the workers.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p>Additionally, the union has established a 24\/7 picket outside the hotel to discourage patrons from giving the hotel any business. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dozens-of-foreign-volunteers-abandon-ukraine-for-poland-after-russian-missiles-strike-base\/\" title=\"Dozens of Foreign Volunteers Abandon Ukraine for Poland After Russian Missiles Strike Base\">strike began<\/a> on the day Latinos from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Mexico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Mexico<\/a>, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Belize celebrate Mother\u2019s Day, and will continue through the U.S. holiday.<\/p>\n<p>Virgin Hotels said it had a negotiation meeting scheduled for May 2 that the union canceled; however, a spokesperson denied the allegation to the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. It has also gone on to file a complaint to the National Labor Relations Board, alleging that the CWU has \u201cfailed and refused to negotiate in good faith\u201d and issues threats to \u201cretaliate against employees if they did not join or support the union.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the Union has not told us what agreements it believes are necessary to avoid a strike, we have asked the Union to join us in mediation as soon as possible. The goal of mediation is to reach an agreement without disrupting our guest and our team members\u2019 lives with a work stoppage,\u201d Virgin Hotels said in a statement to the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cWhile we are eager to move discussions forward, the Union has declined to participate in mediation at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Negotiations are next slated for May 14. This comes days before country music star Lee Price will have his debut performance at The Theater at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas on May 17, and months before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Las-Vegas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Las Vegas<\/a> is slated to host the Formula One Grand Prix in November.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This comes after the CWU called off an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/business\/culinary-workers-union-strike-deadline-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">impending strike<\/a> against MGM, Caesar\u2019s, and Wynn Resort last November. While the other resorts are long-standing hotels on the Vegas strip, Virgin Hotels opened its doors in March 2021, and has never experienced a labor strike until Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The CWU represents 60,000 hospitality workers in Nevada, with all but 7,000 based in Las Vegas. It is considered the largest union in the state.
