He has also refused to recuse himself from cases related to the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol, though his wife Virginia Thomas was involved in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/january-6\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>fight to contest the results<\/a> of the 2020 election.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas made the comments at a judicial conference in Alabama, though he did not specifically address the controversies. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy wife and I, the last two or three years, just the nastiness and the lies,\u201d Thomas said. \u201cThere\u2019s certainly been a lot of negativity in our lives, my wife and I, over the last few years, but we choose not to focus on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Supreme-Court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Supreme Court<\/a> justices don\u2019t generally speak with reporters or in public, so Thomas\u2019s comments are rare. Virginia\u2019s controversy stems from text messages she made to former President Donald Trump\u2019s White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, urging him to pursue overturning the 2020 election after Trump lost to President Joe Biden.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas is both the oldest and longest-serving Supreme Court justice. Former president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/George-H-W-Bush\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>George H.W.
