Our public officials should not live in fear of their lives, but attacks like the defendant\u2019s breed fear and dissuade people from running for office or otherwise taking roles in the public sphere,\u201d prosecutors <a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.cand.403618\/gov.uscourts.cand.403618.234.0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>wrote<\/a>. \u201cAt this moment in time, this defendant continues to present as a strong risk\u2014to the Speaker Emerita and others\u2014because of his failure to accept responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors also justified the sentence given DePape never expressed remorse for his crimes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe defendant seemed proud of what he had accomplished,\u201d prosecutors wrote. \u201cHours later, when interviewed by Sergeant Hurley, the defendant also expressed no remorse about nearly killing Mr. Pelosi, and instead explained the other targets that he had not been able to reach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The filing cites the example of white supremacist Matthew Hale, who was sentenced to 40 years in prison for encouraging an undercover agent to kidnap a federal judge, as precedent, noting that Hale\u2019s case wasn\u2019t as severe as DePape\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>In a trial lasting less than a week, DePape was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2441368\/paul-pelosi-hammer-trial-david-depape-found-guilty-in-attack-on-nancy-pelosis-husband\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"convicted\">convicted<\/a> by a jury late last year of attempted kidnapping of a federal official and assault upon an immediate family member of a federal official.
