Republicans\u200c cite Cohen&#8217;s alleged lies to Congress in\u200c 2019, pushing for accountability in light of his role as a witness. Republican Representatives Jim Jordan and James\u2064 Comer are calling on the Department of Justice to take action against Michael Cohen for perjury. Jim Jordan of Ohio and James Comer of Kentucky sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland this week in which the two asked the Justice Department to prosecute Michale Cohen for perjury.<\/p>\n<p>Cohen, a one-time personal attorney to former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/biden-impeachment-articles-prepared-tactics-democrats-used-trump-come-back-haunt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a>, is currently a star witness for Manhattan District Attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/turley-braggs-created-frankenstein-case-trump-based-dead-misdemeanors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alvin Bragg<\/a> in the controversial and ongoing Trump \u201chush money\u201d trial in New York.<\/p>\n<p>Bragg\u2019s office is trying Trump on 34 felony counts of allegedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trump-kicks-off-trial-day-direct-accusation-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">falsifying business records<\/a> in what the DA has called an effort to conceal payments to former adult film actress <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/judge-merchan-refuses-let-trump-fire-back-stormy-daniels-testimony-wont-modify-gag-order\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stormy Daniels<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Daniels claimed she had an affair with Trump almost two decades ago, which Trump has vehemently denied.<\/p>\n<p>Cohen, a convicted felon, said he paid her on behalf of Trump to keep her claims under wraps just weeks before the 2016 election.<\/p>\n<p>Now that Cohen is a witness in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/alvin-braggs-top-trump-prosecutor-comes-official-investigation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/a-tale-of-two-judges-how-a-pair-of-women-are-navigating-trumps-blockbuster-federal-trials\/\" title=\"Two women judges tackle Trump's high-profile federal trials\">politically-charged trial<\/a> of Trump<\/a> \u2013 the first criminal trial of a former or current president in American history \u2013 Jordan and Comer want him tried by the DOJ for what they said were clear instances in which he had lied to Congress in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The House Judiciary Committee and Oversight Committee chairs said in <a href=\"https:\/\/judiciary.house.gov\/sites\/evo-subsites\/republicans-judiciary.house.gov\/files\/evo-media-document\/2024-05-08%20JDJ%20JC%20to%20Garland%20re%20Cohen_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">their Wednesday letter<\/a> to Garland that they had found six lies Cohen told while under oath d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/116\/chrg\/CHRG-116hhrg35230\/CHRG-116hhrg35230.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">uring testimony in February 2019<\/a> in which he claimed Trump reimbursed him after he paid off Daniels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCohen\u2019s testimony is now the basis for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-trump-jr-blast-ny-ag-letitia-james-for-political-persecution-this-is-banana-republic-stuff\/\" title=\"Trump, Trump Jr. Blast NY AG Letitia James For \u2018Political Persecution\u2019: \u2018This Is Banana Republic Stuff\u2019\">politically motivated prosecution<\/a> of a former president and current declared candidate for that office,\u201d Jordan and Comer stated. \u201cIn light of the reliance on the testimony from this repeated liar, we reiterate our concerns and ask what the Justice Department has done to hold Cohen accountable for his false statements to Congress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/fani-willis-throws-tantrum-jim-jordan-contempt-deadline-arrives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jordan<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/icymi-james-comer-made-special-addition-hearing-chamber-just-hunter-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Comer<\/a> said they had identified six instances in which Cohen \u201cmade willfully and intentionally false statements of material fact\u201d when testifying before the Oversight Committee.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Are you glad Merrick Garland is NOT on the Supreme Court?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The House Republicans listed the following items as examples of Cohen\u2019s alleged perjury:<\/p>\n<p><em>Cohen denied committing various fraudulent acts to which he had pleaded guilty in federal court.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Cohen repeatedly testified that he did not seek employment in President Trump\u2019s White House, despite evidence from the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office for the Southern District of New York demonstrating that \u201cCohen privately told friends\u2026 that he expected to be given a prominent role and title in the new administration.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Cohen stated that he did not direct the creation of a Twitter account known as @WomenForCohen, which is contradicted by statements from the owner of the IT firm that created the account for Cohen.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Cohen attested in his Truth in Testimony form that he did not have any reportable foreign government contracts, despite entering into two contracts in 2017 with entities owned in part by foreign governments.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Cohen\u2019s testimony at the hearing contradicted various aspects of his written statement submitted in advance of the hearing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Cohen asserted that he committed crimes out of \u201cblind loyalty\u201d to President Trump, which was contradicted by findings made by federal prosecutors and a federal court.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Jordan and Comer concluded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/federal-judge-slaps-michael-cohens-attempt-sue-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cohen\u2019s<\/a> testimony was \u201cfull of intentionally false statements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd now, a popularly elected, partisan prosecutor is using this convicted liar to carry out his politically motivated prosecution of a former president,\u201d the congressmen said to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ag-merrick-garland-announces-end-biden-classified-documents-investigation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Garland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTherefore, we again request that the Justice Department investigate whether any of Mr. Cohen\u2019s testimony warrants another charge for violating [federal law.]\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jordan and then-Republican Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/rudy-giuliani-mark-meadows-16-others-indicted-arizona-behest-democratic-attorney-general\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark Meadows<\/a> of North Carolina first recommended a criminal probe into Cohen more than five years ago \u2013 immediately after he testified before the Oversight Committee \u2013 on\u00a0Feb. 28, 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The pair alleged then that Cohen had \u201ccommitted perjury and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fact-check-no-the-military-did-not-arrest-sonia-sotomayor\/\" title=\"FACT CHECK: No, The Military Did Not Arrest Sonia Sotomayor\">knowingly made false statements<\/a>,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/02\/28\/politics\/house-criminal-referral-michael-cohen\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\"
