So what\u2019s the origin of \u2018Mr. Birchum?\u2019\u201d Shapiro asks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIn 1994, I was a boxing coach. I was training Jimmy Kimmel to box. Jimmy, the sports guy back then, for KROQ radio, for a morning stunt. He thought I was funny. He said, \u2018I think I can get you on the radio. But you\u2019ve got to come up with a character,&#8217;\u201d Carolla explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He continued, \u201cI said, \u2018I don\u2019t do characters.\u2019 He said, \u2018You better come up with one.\u2019 And I came up with a character called Mr. Birchum. Thirty years ago on KROQ radio in Los Angeles for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/timeline-andrew-cuomos-scandalous-covid-19-response\/\" title=\"Timeline: Andrew Cuomo\u2019s Scandalous COVID-19 Response\">morning show<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Corolla said the character \u201cimmediately became insanely popular\u201d and added, \u201cThis is how I got into show business.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Next, Shapiro asked about the character and what he represents. \u201cWho was the character? They were angry guys with big mustaches and big forearms who loved woodworking and hated kids.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cEven as a 13- or 14-year-old, I thought it was interesting that these guys went to school every day to work with kids, but hated kids,\u201d he continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThey loved their shop. And they looked at it as their shop, and the kids were sort of a nuisance and an annoyance who were coming in and who were using their tools. That\u2019s sort of the approach for every shop teacher I had. And so, as I went through life, I would tell people, \u2018Did you ever have a mean shop teacher?\u2019 And they\u2019d go, \u2018Oh, mine was the worst!\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Carolla said, \u201cI sort of realized everyone had a shared experience of the horrible, mean shop teachers. And I thought, I\u2019ve never seen an \u2018SNL\u2019 sketch about a mean shop teacher. No one has captured this guy. But I\u2019ll capture him. And that\u2019s where Mr. Birchum was born.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Carolla voices Mr. Birchum, a no-nonsense teacher navigating Teddy Roosevelt Junior High with his family \u2014 Wendi (Megyn Kelly), Eddie (Kyle Dunnigan), and stepdaughter Jeanie (Brett Cooper).
