Kyle, diagnosed with Asperger&#8217;s\u2063 syndrome and \u2062ADD, awaits trial with a bail set at $2 million, facing a\u200c potential life sentence if convicted. \u200dThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ny-woman-who-fatally-shoved-singing-coach-age-87-sentenced-to-more-time-in-prison-than-expected\/\" title=\"NY woman sentenced to longer prison term than anticipated for fatally shoving 87-year-old singing coach.\">case\u2062 sheds light<\/a> on \u200d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/a-perfect-storm-father-blames-covid-19-isolation-for-12-year-old-sons-suicide\/\" title=\"\u2018A Perfect Storm\u2019: Father Blames COVID-19 Isolation For 12-Year-Old Son\u2019s Suicide\">mental health challenges<\/a> and\u200b the need for improved accessibility to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/three-things-to-know-about-newsoms-4-billion-mental-health-bill\/\" title=\"Key points about Newsom's  billion mental health bill:\">mental health\u200c services<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/news\/\">  News <\/a>   <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/anazarian\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/anazarian\/%20\"><span>Adelle Nazarian<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   May 10, 2024 at 12:22pm <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>A California man was formally charged with murdering his mother, a popular teacher in the Burbank Unified School District for over 30 years, on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Kyle Lombardo, 25, killed Karyn Lombardo, 57, during a domestic dispute at the family\u2019s California residence on Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was an outstanding teacher,\u201d Natalie Talamantes, incoming president of the school\u2019s PTA, told <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7.com\/post\/kyle-lombardo-charged-in-death-of-mother-burbank-teacher-at-bret-harte-school\/14790410\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KABC-TV<\/a>. \u201cWhat a big loss for us here at Bret Harte [Elementary School].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/ktla.com\/news\/local-news\/son-of-beloved-burbank-teacher-charged-with-her-murder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KTLA-TV<\/a>, the coroner\u2019s office said Karyn died as a result of blunt force trauma to the head.<\/p>\n<p>However, Jimmy Chu, a public <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/mental-health-advocate-jumps-defense-270-pound-student-accused-beating-teachers-aide-unconscious-not-threat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">defender<\/a> assigned to Kyle\u2019s case, said no weapon was used during the argument that led to Karyn\u2019s demise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy office and I are investigating all aspects including potential mental health factors and intellectual, developmental disability to ensure a fair legal process for Mr. Lombardo,\u201d Chu reportedly said, per KTLA.<\/p>\n<p>Kyle\u2019s father, Vince, said he was out of town at the time of the incident and indicated that his son has a mental health condition which they\u2019ve sought help for in the past.<\/p>\n<p>The father also pointed out that the police have previously been called to their home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-one-police-officer-killed-man-mental-health-crisis-another-wounded\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mentally<\/a> challenged. He didn\u2019t want to kill her,\u201d Vince told KABC.<\/p>\n<p>According to KTLA, people who knew Karyn had fond memories of her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was just so nice,\u201d a local Burbank parent told the outlet. \u201cShe was very upfront, very sweet and very kind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe would make us feel like we were the luckiest kids in the world,\u201d Zoe Bautista, one of Karyn\u2019s former students said.<\/p>\n<p>A glance at Kyle\u2019s personal Facebook page shows few posts (typically just profile photo updates), and his mother often was often the only one commenting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLove this handsome young man!!\u201d Karyn Lombardo commented on the above image, along with a kissing face emoji.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy deepest condolences go out to the victim\u2019s loved ones during this tremendously difficult time,\u201d Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gasc\u00f3n said via statement, per KTLA. \u201cMs. Lombardo, a beloved teacher in the Burbank community, had her life senselessly taken. I want to assure the victim\u2019s family and the community that our office is fully committed to seeking justice and accountability in this tragedy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kyle was reportedly diagnosed with Asperger\u2019s syndrome and attention-deficit disorder, or ADD, as a child.<\/p>\n<p>Vince mentioned that Kyle has been on medications that did not seem to work, and over the years, there had been multiple visits to their home by police.<\/p>\n<p>He added that, as an adult, Kyle has struggled to access <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/zg-calls-to-mental-health-helpline-skyrocket-in-wake-of-hurricane-ian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mental health<\/a> services provided by the state, often waiting months for an appointment.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewtrusts.org\/en\/trend\/archive\/fall-2023\/americas-mental-health-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pew<\/a>, a CNN\/Kaiser Family Foundation poll found that 90 percent of Americans feel the country is in a mental health crisis.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, an unprecedented <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/ostp\/news-updates\/2023\/02\/07\/white-house-report-on-mental-health-research-priorities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">White House report<\/a> on Mental Health Research Priorities noted, \u201cOur nation is facing a mental health crisis among people of all ages, and the COVID-19 pandemic has only made these problems worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kyle reportedly made a brief court appearance on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>He is being held on $2 million bail and faces a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/man-charged-with-attempted-murder-following-series-of-bb-gun-shootings-on-southern-california-freeways\/\" title=\"Man Charged With Attempted Murder Following Series Of BB Gun Shootings On Southern California Freeways\">potential maximum sentence<\/a> of life in prison if convicted, according to the city of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.burbankca.gov\/newsroom\/-\/newsdetail\/20124\/woman-found-dead-in-her-home-adult-son-arrested-for-her-murder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Burbank<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p><b><i>A Note from Our Deputy Managing Editor:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span>\u201cWe don\u2019t even know if an election will be held in 2024.\u201d Those 12 words have been stuck in my head since I first read them. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Former Lt.
