Manhattan DA Bragg stepped in to\u2062 halt the\u200c subpoena issued\u2062 by Trump&#8217;s \u200bteam in March.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A judge on Friday shut down <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Donald Trump\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u2018s attempt to subpoena Mark Pomerantz, a former special prosecutor in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/new-york\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"New York\">New York<\/a> who went public with behind-the-scenes details about his attempts to bring charges against the former president.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Juan Merchan criticized the subpoena, which sought Pomerantz\u2019s communications with people who are now witnesses in Trump\u2019s hush money <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"trial\">trial<\/a>, as well as other documents.<\/p>\n<p>The subpoena requests \u201care far too broad and amount to an improper fishing expedition into general discovery,\u201d Merchan wrote in a court order.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no reasonable likelihood that the [subpoenaed documents] would uncover any information that is relevant and material to the proceedings,\u201d Merchan wrote, pointing to a high volume of related documents Trump\u2019s team had already received as part of the discovery process.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s attorneys issued the subpoena in March, and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg quickly moved to block it.<\/p>\n<p>The attorneys sought Pomerantz\u2019s communications with numerous people, including Michael Cohen, a known witness in the case. They specified that they wanted Pomerantz\u2019s communications that showed \u201cany form of bias or animosity toward President Trump,\u201d \u201crequests for benefits or other consideration,\u201d and any conversations about evidence in the case that Pomerantz had with Bragg\u2019s office after he resigned from it.<\/p>\n<p>Pomerantz joined the Manhattan District Attorney\u2019s Office in 2021 on a pro bono basis to investigate Trump. When Bragg, an elected Democrat, took over the office in January 2022, he was reluctant to pursue charges against Trump and halted the investigation, prompting Pomerantz to resign in protest.<\/p>\n<p>Pomerantz\u2019s resignation letter surfaced in the <em>New York Times<\/em>, and it revealed that the ex-prosecutor was angry with Bragg and that Pomerantz had been eager to charge Trump.
