Despite setbacks, Neuralink addressed the\u200b problem through software adjustments, aiming to enhance performance. Upper III<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   May 10, 2024 at 6:21am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>The first brain implant by Elon Musk-owned Neuralink isn\u2019t functioning the way it was designed to.<\/p>\n<p>The issue was first investigated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/neuralinks-first-brain-chip-implant-in-a-human-appeared-flawless-there-was-a-problem-637f1adc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a>, though after the company was contacted by the Journal for comment, it posted about the issue on its public blog.<\/p>\n<p>Noland Arbaugh, an Arizona native who was paralyzed in a serious diving accident while working as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-low-priest-of-pop\/\" title=\"The Low Priest of Pop\">summer camp counselor<\/a> in 2016, became in January the first human recipient of the \u201cTelepathy\u201d brain-computer interface developed by Neuralink.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, he was said to be doing just fine after the surgery.<\/p>\n<p>However, in February, the implanted chip started having <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/elon-musk-confident-brain-implants-ready-humans-good-idea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some problems<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the weeks following the surgery, a number of threads retracted from the brain, resulting in a net decrease in the number of effective electrodes,\u201d Neuralink wrote on its <a href=\"https:\/\/neuralink.com\/blog\/prime-study-progress-update-user-experience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That lowered the ability of Arbaugh to control a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/musks-neuralink-opens-recruitment-for-first-in-human-brain-chip-clinical-trial\/\" title=\"Neuralink, led by Musk, seeks participants for groundbreaking brain chip trial.\">computer cursor<\/a>, measured in bits-per-second, from about 8.0 BPS to less that 4 BPS.<\/p>\n<p>In response, Neuralink made changes to the software\u2019s \u201crecording algorithm\u201d to make it \u201cmore sensitive to neural population signals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The company also \u201cimproved the techniques\u201d used to translate Arbaugh\u2019s brain signals into movements of a computer display cursor controlled through the chip, and \u201cenhanced the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/caruzo-take-it-from-venezuela-no-inflation-is-not-good\/\" title=\"Caruzo \u2013 Take It from Venezuela: No, Inflation Is Not Good\">user interface<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Are these brain implants a bad idea?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>According to the company blog, those changes were sufficient not only to restore the chip\u2019s functionality, but also to improve it beyond its initial performance \u2014 perhaps raising the question for some as to why the enhancements hadn\u2019t already been made.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur current work is focused on pushing cursor control performance to the same level as that of able-bodied individuals, and on expanding functionality to include text entry,\u201d the company said in its blog entry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the future we intend to extend the Link\u2019s functionality to the physical world to enable control of robotic arms, wheelchairs, and other technologies that may help increase independence for people living with quadriplegia,\u201d Neuralink added.<\/p>\n<p>The company has not disclosed the reason that the threads came out, according to the Journal, and may in fact not be certain about the reason.<\/p>\n<p>The Journal reported that the company had investigated the possibility that air trapped inside Arbaugh\u2019s skull after his surgery had contributed to the issue.<\/p>\n<p>Neuralink also considered removing the implant, but as the condition hasn\u2019t seemed to pose any risk to Arbaugh, it was left in, according to unnamed sources cited by the Journal.<\/p>\n<p>The company has reportedly told the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/fda-waves-white-flag-agrees-remove-anti-ivermectin-posts-dismiss-suit-brought-doctors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Food and Drug Administration<\/a> that it believed it could correct the issue.<\/p>\n<p>If Arbaugh continues to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/elon-musk-owned-company-federal-investigation-1500-animals-confirmed-dead-product-testing-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">safely benefit<\/a> from the implanted device, Neuralink hopes to try it on two more people \u201cin the coming months,\u201d and on a total of 10 before the end of the year, the Journal reported.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p><b><i>A Note from Our Deputy Managing Editor:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span>I heard a chilling comment the other day: \u201cWe don\u2019t even know if an election will be held in 2024.\u201d <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>That wasn\u2019t said by a conspiracy theorist or a doomsday prophet.
