Then, he<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2023\/10\/25\/new-house-speaker-mike-johnson-on-the-issues-00123627\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> co-sponsored federal legislation<\/a> that would have banned abortion around the six-week mark. He was critical of the legality of <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> before it was overturned. He endorsed Justice Clarence Thomas\u2019s opinion that the Supreme Court cases that provide the standing for same-sex marriage and\u00a0restrictions on the use of contraception should be revisited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s been some really bad law made,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/goodpods.com\/podcasts\/toddcast-podcast-with-todd-starnes-193062\/praise-god-and-thank-you-president-trump-21639086\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said<\/a>. \u201cThey\u2019ve made a mess of our jurisprudence in this country for the last several decades. And maybe some of that needs to be cleaned up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Abortion bans have been political kryptonite for Republicans since the Supreme Court overturned <em>Roe<\/em>. The half-century-long fight to demolish the legal precedent that made it nearly impossible for states to restrict abortion was a major victory for former President Donald Trump but has proved to be a lead weight for candidates since.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Deep-red states, such as Ohio, saw voters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2450412\/ohio-voters-approve-abortion-rights-amendment-to-state-constitution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>reject<\/a> strict abortion rules out of hand, and the 2022 midterm elections that were supposed to result in massive majorities for the GOP turned out to be something Democrats look back fondly on.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson\u2019s pivot away from his comments that \u201cthe killing of unborn children has been the greatest atrocity that\u2019s been committed in our society\u201d isn\u2019t necessarily a denunciation of his anti-abortion views.
