Upper III<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   May 9, 2024 at 2:43pm <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency announced last week the successful completion of a number of tests of a new drone prototype that might just change sea warfare as we know it.<\/p>\n<p>Called the Manta Ray because of its shape, the uncrewed underwater vehicle is currently under development by DARPA and Northrop Grumman.<\/p>\n<p>On May 1, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.darpa.mil\/news-events\/2024-05-01\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DARPA<\/a> said the prototype of the new UUV completed \u201cfull-scale, in-water testing off the coast of Southern California in February and March 2024.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTesting demonstrated at-sea hydrodynamic performance, including submerged operations using all the vehicle\u2019s modes of propulsion and steering: buoyancy, propellers, and control surfaces,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/us-issues-do-not-travel-guidance-to-80-of-countries-cites-covid-19\/\" title=\"US Issues \u2018Do Not Travel\u2019 Guidance To 80% Of Countries, Cites COVID-19\">agency announced<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On advantage touted by the agency is the fact that the prototype was built in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/dems-worried-marylands-senate-seat-flip-red-real-soon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland<\/a> but shipped \u201cin subsections\u201d to the testing area on the other side of the country.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Manta Ray <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/UUV?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#UUV<\/a> prototype completes full-scale, in-water testing off the coast of SoCal. Built by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/northropgrumman?\">@northropgrumman<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/BIDfh3cZCD\">https:\/\/t.co\/BIDfh3cZCD<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/t6dqWB3i33\">pic.twitter.com\/t6dqWB3i33<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 DARPA (@DARPA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DARPA\/status\/1785671213160825071?\">May 1, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cShipping the vehicle directly to its intended area of operation conserves energy that the vehicle would otherwise expend during transit,\u201d DARPA\u2019s project manager for Manta Ray, Dr. Kyle Woerner, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce deployed, the vehicle uses efficient, buoyancy-driven gliding to move through the water,\u201d he added. \u201cThe craft is designed with several payload bays of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bernie-sanders-congress-must-demand-the-mass-production-and-distribution-of-n95-masks\/\" title=\"Bernie Sanders: \u2018Congress Must Demand The Mass Production And Distribution Of N95 Masks\u2019\">multiple sizes<\/a> and types to enable a wide variety of naval mission sets.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Will drones soon become an even more important part of warfare?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Woerner holds multiple degrees in engineering and robotics, including a doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, according to his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.darpa.mil\/staff\/dr-kyle-woerner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fauci-still-in-denial-over-covid-lab-leak\/\" title=\"Fauci Still in Denial Over COVID Lab Leak\">agency bio<\/a><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The program had announced in September the \u201csplashing\u201d of a scaled prototype near Oahu, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/hawaii-supreme-court-rolls-back-individual-firearm-rights-violating-spirit-aloha\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hawaii<\/a>, and said then that it expected a wider range of testing to occur in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur successful, full-scale Manta Ray testing validates the vehicle\u2019s readiness to advance toward real-world operations after being rapidly assembled in the field from modular subsections,\u201d Woerner said of the California tests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe combination of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/u-s-military-unveils-next-generation-naval-weapon\/\" title=\"Introducing the Latest Naval Weapon by the U.S. Military\">cross-country modular transportation<\/a>, in-field assembly, and subsequent deployment demonstrates a first-of-kind capability for an extra-large UUV,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>Northrop Grumman released a video about 18 months ago showing artists concepts of the new UUV.<\/p>\n<p> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Manta Ray: Mastering the Deep\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FsJEwvhvVak?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cNorthrop Grumman has been pioneering new capabilities in the undersea domain for more than 50 years,\u201d the company said when it posted the concept video to YouTube in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cManta Ray, a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/drone-mothership-for-the-u-s-navy-heres-how-it-could-happen\/\" title=\"Drone Mothership for the U.S. Navy?
