Western support for Ukraine has\u2063 grown, challenging Putin&#8217;s strategies.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/russia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Russia\">Russia<\/a> is \u201cconstantly\u201d analyzing the threshold for using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/nuclear-weapons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Russia\">nuclear weapons<\/a>, according to a top foreign ministry official.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the moment, nothing has changed in this regard, but the situation itself is changing,\u201d Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said Thursday, per a state media translation. \u201cAs a result, the way basic documents in this field relate to the needs of maintaining our security is constantly analyzed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryabkov acknowledged the possibility of lowering the bar for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/putin-tries-to-launch-peace-talks-amid-mounting-losses\/\" title=\"Putin Tries to Launch Peace Talks Amid Mounting Losses\">nuclear weapons usage<\/a> just days after Russian defense officials announced a military drill involving those weapons. Russian President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/vladimir-putin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Vladimir Putin\">Vladimir Putin<\/a> has used nuclear saber-rattling as a method to constrain Western assistance to Ukraine over the last two years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRussia will do utmost to\u00a0avoid a\u00a0global confrontation, but it will not allow itself to\u00a0be threatened,\u201d Putin <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said<\/a> Thursday during an event marking the anniversary of the Allies\u2019 victory over Nazi Germany during the Second World War. \u201cOur strategic forces are always in\u00a0combat readiness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The efficacy of Russia\u2019s nuclear threats has eroded over the last two years as Western governments gradually have stepped up the quality and quantity of the military equipment they send to Ukraine. (AP Photo\/Alexander Zemlianichenko, Pool)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If we just thought about the Russian response, then we could not send anything,\u201d Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/c509400e-ed6b-4f9d-9cd4-bcabd57a01c4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>told<\/a> the <em>Financial Times<\/em> this week. \u201cEvery second week, you hear that somebody will be nuked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Simonyte and some other NATO members have begun to speak of upgrading their support for Ukraine in part due to a growing anxiety that the protracted lapse in U.S. aid to Ukraine has raised the specter of a crisis on the battlefield. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the Russians were to break through the front lines, if there were a Ukrainian request, which is not the case today, we would legitimately have to ask ourselves this question,\u201d French President Emmanuel Macron told the <em>Economist <\/em>in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/world\/2991249\/russia-verbal-escalation-western-leaders-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>recent interview<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cIt would be wrong in terms of credibility and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/how-to-deter-china-from-making-war\/\" title=\"How to Deter China from Making War\">deterrence vis-a-vis<\/a> the Russians to rule it out.
