Marjorie Taylor Greene to\u2063 remove him from his position. The\u2062 rejection highlighted bipartisan opposition, aiming\u200c to avoid leadership uncertainty. Several potential replacements, including Steve Scalise, Tom Emmer, Jim Jordan, and Elise Stefanik\u2062 are considered\u200b for the speakership. The GOP conference remains divided on\u200c future \u200cleadership choices.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) survived an attempt to strip him of the speaker\u2019s gavel in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/2973122\/marjorie-taylor-greene-moves-oust-johnson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/tusli-gabbard-cheers-mcauliffe-loss-in-virginia-a-victory-for-all-americans\/\" title=\"Tusli Gabbard Cheers McAuliffe Loss in Virginia: \u2018A Victory For All Americans\u2019\">resounding rejection<\/a><\/a> of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene\u2019s motion to vacate. But it\u2019s not necessarily an endorsement of his leadership. <\/p>\n<p>The motion to oust Johnson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/2995368\/mtg-drags-johnson-speaker-threat-gop-tires\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>was shot down<\/a> by a majority of both Republicans and Democrats largely due to an overwhelming desire to prevent the House from being plunged into another chaotic leaderless period. But others conceded it would also be too difficult to find another speaker who could win the support of the entire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/GOP\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>GOP<\/a> conference. <\/p>\n<p>Even as Greene and Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) pushed to remove Johnson, the pair acknowledged they did not have a short list of candidates to replace him. However, Massie cited \u201cat least a dozen members of our conference who either politically or privately have done things in their life that qualify them to lead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Republican\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Republican<\/a> has publicly indicated interest in becoming speaker, here are four lawmakers who are considered to be top options should the situation arise. <\/p>\n<h2><strong>Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Among the most obvious contenders to replace Johnson should he be ousted would be Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA), the No. 2 Republican in the House. <\/p>\n<p>Scalise was among the first to announce his candidacy for speaker after former Speaker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/kevin-mccarthy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Kevin McCarthy<\/a> (R-CA) was ousted in October, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/donald-trump-ends-negotiations-with-nancy-pelosi-on-coronavirus-relief\/\" title=\"Donald Trump Ends Negotiations with Nancy Pelosi on Coronavirus Relief\">majority leader<\/a> was the first to be nominated for the position. However, Scalise failed to secure the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/adam-schiff-survives-censure-vote-as-house-votes-to-table-motion\/\" title=\"Adam Schiff avoids censure as House decides to set aside motion.\">majority <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/breaking-real-clear-politics-say-they-never-called-pennsylvania\/\" title=\"BREAKING: Real Clear Politics -- SAY THEY NEVER CALLED PENNSYLVANIA\">votes needed<\/a><\/a> to secure the gavel, prompting him to drop his bid one day later. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not clear whether Scalise would be able to secure enough support this time around, especially after a growing number of GOP lawmakers vowed not to back his bid last year. <\/p>\n<h2><strong>Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) is another top consideration for the speakership after serving in House GOP leadership for the last two years. <\/p>\n<p>Emmer was among those who ran for speaker in October, although, like Scalise, the majority whip was unable to secure the votes needed to win the gavel. His candidacy largely unraveled after former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Donald Trump<\/a> came out in opposition to his bid, calling Emmer a RINO, or \u201cRepublican In Name Only.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since then, though, Emmer\u2019s and Trump\u2019s relationship has been repaired. Emmer endorsed Trump in January, with the former president returning the favor to back the majority whip\u2019s reelection in April. That could shift some Republicans in Emmer\u2019s favor if he chose to launch another bid for speaker in the future. <\/p>\n<h2><strong>Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>House Judiciary Chairman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Jim-Jordan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Jim Jordan<\/a> (R-OH) is also among those who are considered as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/neil-patel-avoiding-the-approaching-american-catastrophe\/\" title=\"Neil Patel: Avoiding the Approaching American Catastrophe\">top choices<\/a> for the speakership despite failing to secure the gavel in October. <\/p>\n<p>Jordan was also among the first to launch a speakership bid to replace McCarthy. However, after three speakership votes, support for the Ohio Republican began to wane \u2014 prompting Republicans to vote to remove him as their nominee. <\/p>\n<p>However, Jordan is well-liked among his conservative colleagues as well as Trump, making it likely he could be eyed as a top contender should the former president return to the White House next year. <\/p>\n<h2><strong>GOP Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY) <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Another Republican leader who could be a top contender is House Republican Conference Chairwoman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Elise-Stefanik\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Elise Stefanik<\/a> (R-NY), a top Trump ally in the House.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the others, Stefanik did not pursue a speakership bid in October after McCarthy\u2019s removal. However, the conference chairwoman is well known among her GOP colleagues and has established herself as a top defender of Trump in the lower chamber. <\/p>\n<p>However, Stefanik is also on a short-list of candidates being considered for Trump\u2019s running mate in the 2024 election, making it likely she would not seek the top House position. <\/p>\n<h2><strong>Other<\/strong> <strong>options<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Even if those candidates did launch bids for the speakership at some point in the future, it\u2019s not guaranteed Republicans would coalesce around a single candidate. That was the struggle GOP lawmakers faced in October, eventually leading to Johnson\u2019s candidacy as a relatively unknown lawmaker at the time. <\/p>\n<p>Johnson has indicated he plans to continue in his leadership position despite efforts to oust him, telling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/journalism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>reporters<\/a> this week he has already begun to map out a plan for the party next year. Johnson said he has the backing of Trump, which could help secure enough support across the GOP conference to solidify his hold on the gavel. <\/p>\n<p>Other lawmakers have suggested there is no lawmaker who could secure the full support of the conference, with Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX) repeatedly joking last year that not even \u201cthe Lord Jesus himself could manage this group.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some lawmakers have cheekily suggested putting themselves in the speaker\u2019s chair, becoming a running joke on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Capitol-Hill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Capitol Hill<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder the Burchett administration,\u201d Rep.
