Some suggest that Trump should pick a running mate that will win over black and Hispanic voters. Other advisers say Trump should pick someone who will appeal to swing-state voters, and some say Trump should pick a candidate not directly involved in the Republican Party in an effort to strengthen his \u201coutsider image.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, political scientists Christopher Devine and Kyle Kopko suggest in their 2020 book <em>Do Running Mates Matter? <\/em>that choosing a vice president has just a small influence on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cook-political-report-georgia-governors-race-shifts-from-toss-up-to-lean-republican\/\" title=\"Cook Political Report: Georgia Governor's Race Shifts From \"Toss Up\" to \"Lean Republican\"\">key voter groups<\/a> and fails to have a lasting effect on voters\u2019 decisions. Devine and Kopko said research shows having a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/joe-biden-knows-he-messed-up-on-fracking-at-debate-and-is-now-doing-damage-control-the-daily-wire\/\" title=\"Joe Biden Knows He Messed Up On Fracking At Debate And Is Now Doing Damage Control | The Daily Wire\">vice presidential candidate<\/a> on the ticket from a state the presidential candidate wasn\u2019t expected to win did little to change that outcome.<\/p>\n<p>In an example of this point, Vice President Kamala Harris has done little to move the needle on Biden\u2019s popularity with minority groups. Despite being the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/kamala-harris-is-the-most-unpopular-vice-president-in-50-years-polls-show\/\" title=\"Kamala Harris Is The Most Unpopular Vice President In 50 Years, Polls Show\">black female vice president<\/a>, she failed to draw more support from the black community for Biden. And currently, though he still holds more support from the black community than Trump, Biden is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/03\/13\/why-democrats-black-hispanic-vote-republican\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>losing<\/a> ground with black voters. Instead, it affects voters\u2019 perception of the presidential candidate\u2019s \u201cleadership skills, trustworthiness, and competence.\u201d The authors suggest that a candidate\u2019s choice should be based on who would make the best president rather than pandering to a particular voting bloc.<\/p>\n<p>A Republican National Committee event hosted at Mar-a-Lago last Saturday was a chance for Trump\u2019s top contenders to gush over and convince the former president why they would be the best fit for vice president. Those in attendance included Gov. Doug Burgum (R-ND), Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), House GOP Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY), Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL), Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), and Gov.
