To combat this alarming trend, the French government, at the behest of Macron, started formulating a policy plan earlier this year that would further subsidize assisted reproductive technology (ART) to replenish the country\u2019s flailing fertility. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1102274141\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-914e5e16fc6e15c6e9016c13a8a35b79 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-914e5e16fc6e15c6e9016c13a8a35b79\"><\/div>\n<p>France\u2019s largely socialized health care system already fully funds IVF for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/world\/france-legalizes-ivf-for-lesbians-and-single-women\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">anyone who wants a baby<\/a>. As a result, more than <a href=\"https:\/\/rollcall.com\/2024\/04\/18\/in-france-and-us-two-wildly-different-takes-on-ivf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">4 percent<\/a> of the nation\u2019s babies are born after conception in a test tube. <\/p>\n<p>Macron hopes that <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/KtQKX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201crelaunching\u201d<\/a> France\u2019s birth rate with promises of free fertility tests and more taxpayer-funded in vitro fertilization (IVF) will invigorate the population to procreate by whatever means necessary. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cUntil recently, we were a country for which this was a strength [\u2026] It\u2019s been less true in recent years,\u201d Macron admitted in January after learning that his country <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/news\/births-in-france-fall-to-post-war-low-in-2023-84a588b3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">saw a 6.6 percent drop in births from 2022 to 2023<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Macron\u2019s plan may appeal to the\u00a0rising number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2018\/04\/transhumanism-advances-in-technology-could-already-put-evolution-into-hyperdrive-but-should-they\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rich<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/08\/25\/elon-musk-hits-the-bullseye-on-fertility-but-misses-the-target-on-family\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">famous<\/a>, and political who believe that science and technology alone will revive birth rates and <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/05\/17\/worried-about-an-ai-dystopia-the-global-fertility-industry-has-it-beat-by-decades\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">improve on humanity\u2019s biological limitations<\/a>. There is, however, a dark side to his proposition.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-3e5e84a274209cbe805f0bded997f6d7 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-3e5e84a274209cbe805f0bded997f6d7\"><\/div>\n<p>France\u2019s sponsorship of test-tube babies sentences at least <a href=\"https:\/\/rollcall.com\/2024\/04\/18\/in-france-and-us-two-wildly-different-takes-on-ivf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">150,0000 embryos to their deaths<\/a> each year on taxpayers\u2019 dime and is responsible for creating thousands of motherless and fatherless children by design. The plan is also ineffective because, even after trying for years to positively impact the nation\u2019s birth rates, it fails to address the factors responsible for the dramatic tumble. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The End Does Not Justify the Means  <\/h2>\n<p>As The Federalist\u2019s David Harsanyi <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/04\/26\/is-the-economy-behind-the-low-birth-rate-unlikely\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noted last month<\/a>, there is a myriad of reasons for low birth rates, including \u201closs of religiosity,\u201d abortion, \u201cwidespread availability of birth control,\u201d and possibly even fearmongering about climate change. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe leading reason we\u2019ve seen declining birth rates is surely that women have joined the workforce and postponed marriage and thus families,\u201d Harsanyi writes. \u201cThis is obvious. People are living longer, but biology doesn\u2019t calibrate itself to your cultural expectations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As evidenced by Macron\u2019s plans and even U.S. Democrats\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/01\/23\/democrats-sweeping-ivf-bill-aims-to-stifle-regulation-of-unchecked-big-fertility-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">policies<\/a> defending Big Fertility, world leaders are often tempted by the promises that IVF will score them political points and fix their countries\u2019 problems.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-72330e2f0f675ea348cc953be4fea70f fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-72330e2f0f675ea348cc953be4fea70f\"><\/div>\n<p>Yet, IVF is far from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.factsaboutfertility.org\/modeling-the-cumulative-effectiveness-of-fertility-treatments-a-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a foolproof way<\/a> to ensure parenthood.\u00a0The only thing it can almost always guarantee is the commodification of human life and more excuses to delay parenthood.<\/p>\n<p>ART gives young people who have the best chances of naturally procreating a false sense of security about their decisions to delay marriage and reproduction. Because technologies that claim they can outsmart their biological clock are so readily available to them, they choose to use their peak fertile years on a corporate cubicle job or dating around instead of settling down. <\/p>\n<p>When the desire for a child comes, they can commission one, regardless of their relationship status or natural ability to reproduce. This leads to the proliferation of Frankensteined families, which <a href=\"https:\/\/ifstudies.org\/blog\/no-ring-no-baby\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">directly impacts birth rates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fertility Without Family Is a Failure<\/h2>\n<p>The moment the fractured families model offered by ART (with its egg buying, sperm selling, IVF, and surrogacy) becomes the priority is the moment our decline accelerates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t want a world where children are spawned in artificial wombs and raised unlovingly, for example, even though this would ensure a steady supply of new humans,\u201d Federalist Contributor Georgi Boorman once <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/08\/25\/elon-musk-hits-the-bullseye-on-fertility-but-misses-the-target-on-family\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>. \u201cThey are people, and how they are nurtured and by whom matters deeply.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Children who grow up without their married, biological mother and father have clear <a href=\"http:\/\/futureofchildren.princeton.edu\/sites\/futureofchildren\/files\/foc_vol_30_no_1_combined_v6.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">physical, emotional, and educational disadvantages<\/a> that do not systematically affect their peers in stable nuclear family situations. Boys specifically who spend their key years in fatherless homes, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/01\/29\/pentagon-to-pay-for-soldiers-to-manufacture-motherless-and-fatherless-babies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ones ART enables<\/a> and its <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/08\/12\/heres-what-mindy-kaling-gets-wrong-in-her-plea-for-college-girls-to-freeze-their-eggs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">proponents promote<\/a>, are\u00a0less likely\u00a0to <a href=\"https:\/\/ifstudies.org\/blog\/life-without-father-less-college-less-work-and-more-prison-for-young-men-growing-up-without-their-biological-father\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">graduate and more prone to criminal acts and violence<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, children who grow up in homes fraught with divorce and broken relationships are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wf-lawyers.com\/divorce-statistics-and-facts\/#:~:text=Certain%20studies%20have%20shown%20that,a%2035%20percent%20higher%20rate.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more likely to experience the same outcomes as adults<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A generation of people haunted by these consequences doesn\u2019t suggest the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.russellsage.org\/sites\/default\/files\/DeclineMarriage-download.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">strong, flourishing<\/a> society we know comes with the widespread presence of the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/6WT48\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">indispensable nuclear family<\/a>. Instead, it all but predicts that birth rates will continue to tumble as the Western world drifts away from God and toward gods like abortion and climate change alarmism.<\/p>\n<p>Promoting and even subsidizing reproductive tech as a solution for nations\u2019 fertility woes, much like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/23971366\/declining-birth-rate-fertility-babies-children\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">paying people to have kids<\/a>, won\u2019t work. Yes, babies are good. Yes, Western countries could benefit from having more of them.
