The ongoing scrutiny reflects broader political and legal tensions\u2063 surrounding Cohen&#8217;s involvement with former President Trump.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<figure>                         <\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A pair of top House Republicans are demanding the Department of Justice (DOJ) open up a criminal probe into former Trump attorney Michael Cohen for allegedly lying to Congress. <\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, the GOP chairmen of the House Oversight and Judiciary Committees sent a <a href=\"https:\/\/judiciary.house.gov\/sites\/evo-subsites\/republicans-judiciary.house.gov\/files\/evo-media-document\/2024-05-08%20JDJ%20JC%20to%20Garland%20re%20Cohen_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter<\/a> to Attorney General Merrick Garland calling on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/d-c-mayor-congress-must-open-a-probe-into-security-failures-at-u-s-capitol\/\" title=\"D.C. Mayor: Congress must open a probe into security failures at U.S. Capitol\">federal law enforcement<\/a> to examine Cohen\u2019s 2019 testimony to Congress as evidence of perjury. Lawmakers first made the criminal referral on Feb. 28, 2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCohen\u2019s testimony is now the basis for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-trump-jr-blast-ny-ag-letitia-james-for-political-persecution-this-is-banana-republic-stuff\/\" title=\"Trump, Trump Jr. Blast NY AG Letitia James For \u2018Political Persecution\u2019: \u2018This Is Banana Republic Stuff\u2019\">politically motivated prosecution<\/a> of a former president and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/watch-house-republicans-send-letter-to-manhattan-da-over-possible-trump-indictment\/\" title=\"WATCH: House Republicans send letter to Manhattan DA over possible Trump indictment\">current declared candidate<\/a> for that office,\u201d wrote James Comer, R-Ky., and Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, in the joint letter. \u201cIn light of the reliance on the testimony from this repeated liar, we reiterate our concerns and ask what the Justice Department has done to hold Cohen accountable for his false statements to Congress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Comer and Jordan outlined six specific times they say Cohen lied to federal lawmakers, including claims that he never committed fraud (Cohen <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/north-america-donald-trump-us-news-ap-top-news-michael-cohen-74aaf72511d64fceb1d64529207bde64\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pled<\/a> guilty to fraud charges in 2018). Cohen was sentenced to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-sdny\/pr\/michael-cohen-sentenced-3-years-prison\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">three years<\/a> behind bars following the guilty plea deal with federal prosecutors on charges of tax evasion, making false statements to banks, and violations of campaign finance laws.<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers said Cohen even admitted last year to lying to Congress in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt a hearing in the politicized lawsuit brought by the New York Attorney General against President Trump, Cohen admitted to lying under oath during a 2019 deposition before [House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI)],\u201d wrote Chairmen Comer and Jordan. \u201cPresident Trump\u2019s attorney asked Cohen if he lied during the deposition when testifying about whether he was directed to inflate certain financial numbers, to which Cohen responded, \u2018Yes.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee responded by making <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/11\/14\/news\/house-intel-committee-chief-asks-doj-to-nail-michael-cohen-for-admitted-lie-to-congress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">another <\/a>criminal referral to the Department of Justice. <\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Comer and Jordan also said Cohen repeatedly denied ever seeking a job in the Trump administration. The claims contradict \u201cevidence from the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office for the Southern District of New York demonstrating that \u2018Cohen privately told friends \u2026 that he expected to be given a prominent role and title in the new administration.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cohen is now at the center of former President Donald Trump\u2019s New York prosecution wherein Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is trying to jail the Republican presidential candidate over 2016 payments to sex seller Stormy Daniels. Cohen was President Trump\u2019s lawyer who reportedly orchestrated a $130,000 election-year payment to Daniels to keep her quiet about an affair with the billionaire presidential nominee. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/discredited-democrats-attack-durham-to-deflect-from-their-own-tarnished-reputations\/\" title=\"Disgraced Dems target Durham to divert attention from their tarnished image.\">long-time attorney<\/a> for the former president is expected to testify in the ongoing trial with Trump facing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2024\/05\/06\/trump-trial-witness-list\/73584055007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">34 <\/a>felony charges of falsifying business records. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurrently, Manhattan\u2019s popularly elected District Attorney, Alvin Bragg, is using Cohen as his star witness in an ongoing criminal prosecution of President Donald Trump,\u201d lawmakers wrote Wednesday. \u201cBragg\u2019s case heavily relies on Cohen\u2019s testimony and credibility.\u201d <\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Tristan Justice is the western correspondent for The Federalist and the author of Social Justice Redux, a conservative newsletter on culture, health, and wellness.
