The candidate, \u200cJohn\u200b McGuire, faces accusations of \u200cfinancial discrepancies in previous campaigns, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/hsbc-kicks-off-informal-investor-talks-for-indonesian-business-ipo-sources-2\/\" title=\"HSBC kicks off informal investor talks for Indonesian business IPO \u2013 sources\">including listing<\/a> a deceased individual as treasurer beyond their death. The situation prompts requests for a deeper probe into the campaign&#8217;s financial\u2063 operations.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The Republican candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/2930946\/freedom-caucus-rebel-bob-good-faces-own-ouster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>seeking to oust<\/a> Freedom Caucus Chairman Bob Good (R-VA) could face an investigation over allegations he listed a deceased person as his campaign treasurer to approve finance reports. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/730332744\/Ethics-investigation-request\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>In a letter<\/a> sent to U.S. Attorney Jessica Aber last week, John McGuire is accused of making \u201cserious financial discrepancies\u201d in previous campaigns for the state legislature as well as for Congress. The letter specifically cites reports from McGuire\u2019s run for Virginia\u2019s House of Delegates in 2021 that showed the candidate\u2019s fundraising arm, Friends of John McGuire, listing David Matthew Clemens as the campaign treasurer even after his death in October of that year. <\/p>\n<p>Clemens was appointed treasurer on July 26, 2021, according to the group\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/730333467\/Statement-of-Organization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>statement of organization<\/a>, and was tasked with authorizing all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/asian-shares-hit-two-week-high-on-fed-pause-bets-china-boost\/\" title=\"Asian shares rise on expectations of a pause in Fed rate hikes and positive developments in China, reaching a two-week high.\">expenditure reports<\/a> in that position. Clemens later died on Oct. 10, 2021, triggering a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/a-worthy-recipient-pro-life-group-names-trump-pro-life-person-of-the-year\/\" title=\"\u201cA Worthy Recipient\u201d- Pro-Life Group Names Trump Pro-Life \u201cPerson Of The Year\u201d\">state law requiring<\/a> the campaign to designate a new treasurer within 10 days. <\/p>\n<p>However, <a href=\"https:\/\/cfreports.elections.virginia.gov\/Committee\/Index\/30297172-1f16-e711-8413-984be103f032\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>campaign finance reports show<\/a> McGuire continued to file finance reports for his <a href=\"https:\/\/cfreports.elections.virginia.gov\/Report\/Index\/294682\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>House District 56 race<\/a> with Clemens\u2019s approval until August 2022, roughly 10 months after Clemens had died. <\/p>\n<p>As a result, lawyer Matthew Hardin is requesting an investigation into \u201cthe identity of the individual in actual day-to-day control of the accounts,\u201d the letter states. <\/p>\n<p>Hardin does not have any connection to either the Good or McGuire campaign, he told the <em>Washington Examiner. <\/em>Rather, the lawyer said he has met both the candidates personally and used to live in Washington, D.C., which prompted the \u201cdeeper dive\u201d into the race. <\/p>\n<p>The letter points to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fact-check-have-covid-19-vaccines-caused-over-2500-miscarriages\/\" title=\"FACT CHECK: Have COVID-19 Vaccines Caused Over 2,500 Miscarriages?\">email address listed<\/a> under Clemens\u2019s name in the statement of organization that appears to belong to Thomas Datwyler, who is from Wisconsin. However, Hardin argues, state law dictates that a campaign treasurer must be a registered voter of the state, which would be a \u201cseparate violation of the law\u201d aside from listing a deceased treasurer. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven that Mr. Clemens continued to be listed as treasurer for months after his death, it raises the question whether Mr. Datwyler was performing the role of treasurer, perhaps before and after Mr. Clemens\u2019 death,\u201d Hardin wrote. <\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/730332600\/Amended-Statement-of-Organization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>amended statement of organization<\/a> provided to the <em>Washington Examiner <\/em>shows Friends of Bob McGuire updating its treasurer in March 2022 under the name of Madelyn McGuire. That updated form also listed Datwyler\u2019s email under the treasurer\u2019s information. <\/p>\n<p>The <em>Washington Examiner <\/em>contacted the McGuire campaign for comment. <\/p>\n<p>Hardin cited campaign finance reports that show Datwyler <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fec.gov\/data\/committee\/C00793505\/?cycle=2022&#038;tab=about-committee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>listed as the treasurer<\/a> for McGuire\u2019s federal campaign for Virgnia\u2019s 7th Congressional District in 2021-2022. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt appears that Mr Datwyler performed this role with respect to Mr McGuire\u2019s federal campaign during the same time period \u2026 in which Datwyler is named as treasurer (which is legal in federal committees),\u201d Hardin wrote. \u201cIt appears possible that McGuire likely used Datwyler for the same purpose in his Virginia race, in contravention of the law, explaining why Virginia filings inaccurately listed a deceased individual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hardin listed several other irregularities and possible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/breaking-president-trump-gives-pardons-to-73-individuals-and-commutes-another-70-sentences-steve-bannon-is-included\/\" title=\"BREAKING: President Trump Gives Pardons to 73 Individuals and Commutes Another 70 Sentences \u2013 Steve Bannon Is Included\">campaign finance violations<\/a> throughout his letter, including duplicate expenditure reports between two state campaigns, acceptance of illegal contributions during the General Assembly session, and the use of state funds for a federal race, among other things. <\/p>\n<p>The letter, which was also sent to Goochland County Commonwealth Attorney John Lumpkins, requests a \u201cfull investigation into these apparent violations\u201d and to \u201ctake any appropriate action\u201d necessary. <\/p>\n<p>Good\u2019s campaign told the <em>Washington Examiner <\/em>it was unaware of the allegations against McGuire. However, a spokesperson criticized the Republican challenger and said the team expects \u201cthe appropriate authorities will investigate this matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sure it will be fairly easy to determine if the treasurer who signed his reports was alive or not at the time of signing,\u201d a spokesperson said in a statement. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not entirely clear whether the matter will be taken up by officials for an investigation. A spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office in Eastern Virginia confirmed with the <em>Washington Examiner <\/em>it received the letter from Hardin but noted that such inquiries are forwarded to separate investigative bodies for review.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Washington Examiner <\/em>also contacted Lumpkins for comment but did not hear back before deadline. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The allegations come as McGuire mounts a challenge to Good\u2019s reelection bid, marking one of the most contentious GOP primaries in the 2024 cycle. Good, who was elected as chairman of the Freedom Caucus earlier this year, is facing a tough primary election on June 18, and several of his Republican colleagues are backing his challenger. <\/p>\n<p>The high-profile challenge comes as House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has implored members not to get involved with other members\u2019 primaries, instead urging Republicans to project a sense of unity ahead of the 2024 election.
