Glenn Youngkin, R-Va., elected in a tight race. Those who voted for Youngkin believe parents do matter. But has his tenure in office made it a reality so far?<\/p>\n<p>On April 24, 2024, I reached out to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doe.virginia.gov\/about-vdoe\/agency-leadership\/superintendent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lisa Coons<\/a>, Virginia\u2019s superintendent of public instruction (appointed by Youngkin), regarding President Joe Biden\u2019s absurd <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.ed.gov\/about\/offices\/list\/ocr\/docs\/t9-unofficial-final-rule-2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rewrite<\/a> of Title IX. I asked Coons to join\u00a0South Carolina\u2019s Superintendent\u00a0of Education Ellen Weaver and Louisiana\u2019s Superintendent of Education\u00a0Cade Brumley\u00a0in <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/lgbtq\/4625014-red-states-set-stage-for-federal-showdown-over-transgender-student-protections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rejecting<\/a> the unfair and arguably unconstitutional Title IX rules recently released by the U.S. Department of Education.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-293775551\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-2de8ff249cc2b5a17ea93d78e7109b3c fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-2de8ff249cc2b5a17ea93d78e7109b3c\"><\/div>\n<p>In my email, I explained the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/04\/25\/bidens-title-ix-rule-guarantees-discrimination-censorship-and-the-end-of-parents-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">problems<\/a> with Biden\u2019s revision of Title IX \u2014 that\u00a0conflating biological sex and gender has troubling consequences, particularly for children. Our daughters deserve private bathrooms and changing facilities. Women\u2019s sports must be female-only for the sake of fairness. Federally mandating that our children use a person\u2019s preferred pronouns is compelled speech and a violation of the First\u00a0Amendment. And students in college who are accused of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/johnny-depps-court-victory-deflates-the-massive-believe-all-women-industry\/\" title=\"Johnny Depp\u2019s Court Victory Deflates The Massive \u2018Believe All Women\u2019 Industry\">sexual assault deserve<\/a> the right to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/p\/biden-title-ix-civil-rights-rollback\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">due process<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On April 30, Attorney General Jason Miyares issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oag.state.va.us\/media-center\/news-releases\/2727-april-30-2024-attorney-general-miyares-joins-fight-to-preserve-title-ix-student-privacy-and-fairness-for-women-in-education\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press release<\/a> indicating that Virginia would be joining \u201ca six-state coalition in suing the federal Department of Education (DOE) to challenge its dangerous overhaul of Title IX of the Educational Amendments Act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although I am thankful that Miyares is rightfully joining the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/south-dakotas-noem-launches-legal-strategy-to-take-on-biden\/\" title=\"South Dakota's Noem Launches Legal Strategy to Take on Biden\">multi-state lawsuit<\/a>, I remain confused about the administration\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/watch-black-americans-debunk-liberal-talking-point-that-voter-id-is-racist-theyre-ignorant\/\" title=\"WATCH: Black Americans Debunk Liberal Talking Point That Voter ID Is \u2018Racist\u2019: \u2018They\u2019re Ignorant\u2019\">general lack<\/a> of response to concerned parents. As of now, neither Coons, nor anyone from her office, has responded to my email. (As of publication, the Virginia Department of Education\u00a0has not responded to a request for comment from The Federalist.) <\/p>\n<p>Despite the silver lining in Miyares announcing action against the unjust revision of Title IX in his press release, this is not the first time parents have been otherwise ignored by the \u201cparents matter\u201d administration.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-3f8eb8e18951f1c33accdde72c58fc9a fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-3f8eb8e18951f1c33accdde72c58fc9a\"><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Symbolic Gestures from \u2018Day One\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>From \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.virginia.gov\/news-releases\/2022\/january\/name-918519-en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Day One<\/a>,\u201d Youngkin emphasized the importance of parental say in education matters. He introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.virginia.gov\/media\/governorvirginiagov\/governor-of-virginia\/pdf\/74---eo\/74---eo\/EO-1---ENDING-THE-USE-OF-INHERENTLY-DIVISIVE-CONCEPTS,-INCLUDING-CRITICAL-RACE-THEORY,-AND-RESTORING-EXCELLEN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Executive Order One<\/a>, which prohibited the teaching of divisive concepts in public schools. But he did not implement it in a way that made much difference. <\/p>\n<p>There was an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/11\/03\/politics\/youngkin-tipline-parents-schools-virginia\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">email address<\/a>, for example, intended to collect information regarding public schools\u2019 lessons on divisive concepts, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/white-house-releases-list-of-president-trumps-accomplishments-and-it-is-historic\/\" title=\"White House Releases List of President Trump\u2019s Accomplishments \u2013  And It Is Historic!\">critical race theory<\/a>. I received no response to my <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/12\/14\/you-wont-believe-the-leftist-nonsense-public-school-teachers-inject-into-your-kids-brain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">concerns<\/a> sent to that email address\u00a0and, to my knowledge, neither did anyone else who submitted emails to that address.<\/p>\n<p>I also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/beltway-confidential\/2776627\/the-pronoun-circus-continues-in-fairfax-county-as-the-district-defies-gov-youngkin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a> about divisive concepts taught to our children in Fairfax County public schools and\u00a0questioned\u00a0if Youngkin\u2019s administration would act, to no avail. The Virginia governor\u2019s executive order against divisive concepts in public education was essentially a symbolic gesture that lacked sufficient implementation mechanisms.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.virginia.gov\/media\/governorvirginiagov\/governor-of-virginia\/pdf\/74---eo\/74---eo\/EO-2---School-Mask-Mandate-Executive-Order-Exception.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Executive Order Two<\/a>, the Youngkin administration said parents had the right to decide if their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/virginia-schools-threaten-maskless-students-with-suspension-isolation\/\" title=\"Virginia Schools Threaten Maskless Students With Suspension, Isolation\">children wore masks<\/a> to public schools. After the executive order was supposed to be in effect, my three sons \u2014 then in third, fifth, and seventh grades \u2014 went to school maskless with my written permission. Now, they have a cumulative 39 days of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/opinion\/lawsuit-forced-masking-children-virginia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suspensions<\/a> to show for their so-called maskless freedoms. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-646f214b6696e2c3da82a1b1d2c477bc fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-646f214b6696e2c3da82a1b1d2c477bc\"><\/div>\n<p>When I reached out to Youngkin\u2019s administration for help, I was met with sympathy, but not action. Despite subsequent appeal to the school district, my sons\u2019 suspensions remain on their records to this day \u2014 more than four years after lockdowns began.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Parental Rights in Excusing Children from Public Schools<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In December 2023, I reached out to Coons, for the first time, about the absurd definition of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/law.lis.virginia.gov\/admincode\/title8\/agency20\/chapter730\/section10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unexcused absence<\/a>\u201d in Virginia\u2019s public schools. In the email, I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/restoring-america\/community-family\/2959719\/virginias-public-schools-need-to-stay-in-their-lane-regarding-student-absences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">explained<\/a> that the Virginia Department of Education needs to change its definition, which currently grants the government power at the expense of parental rights. <\/p>\n<p>It is not up to the school\u2019s administration to determine whether it\u2019s acceptable when a child misses school when the parent excuses him. If a parent excuses the child, whether it is for an illness or a sporting event, that should automatically make the absence excused. The reasons our children need to miss school are absolutely none of the school district\u2019s business as long as we excuse the absence. Coons never responded.<\/p>\n<p>I thought all of this might just be a Virginia issue \u2014 that perhaps with their silence, Youngkin and his appointees were simply pandering to a constituency less concerned about parental rights for future electoral gains. But last week, a father in a Republican district in Indiana, a Republican state, shared his experience with me. In his rural district, the school also has the right to decide whether his reason for excusing his children from school is acceptable to the school district\u2019s administrators. The father was furious, just as we all should be.<\/p>\n<p>The Indiana father\u2019s experience made me wonder if we are the pawns of a panderverse. Political candidates throw us a \u201cparents matter\u201d bone in our busy lives. While we feel warm and fuzzy as we prepare meals and carpool our children to and from sporting events, some of us forget to follow up with what such a mantra might entail.<\/p>\n<p>Parents are not pawns for political elites to take for granted. To our very core, we understand our importance in our children\u2019s lives. What exactly are our politicians going to do to make sure that parents, and not the government, have the final say in raising our children?
