His path to victory faces obstacles in primary and general elections against Governor \u200cLarry Hogan.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The race for control of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/senate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Senate\">Senate<\/a> is expected to be costly, and in several battles, those <a href=\"https:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/campaign-finance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"funds\">funds<\/a> are coming directly from candidates\u2019 pockets.<\/p>\n<p>As Democrats are on defense across the country in their bid to keep control of the upper chamber of <a href=\"https:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/congress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Congress\">Congress<\/a>, in three pivotal races, the candidate\u2019s spending will be put to the test in the primary and general elections.<\/p>\n<h2>David Trone \u2014 Maryland<\/h2>\n<p>Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/david-trone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"David Trone\">David Trone<\/a> (D-MD) is attempting to succeed Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) with massive spending by himself, but he faces tougher-than-expected races in next week\u2019s primary and the November <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/impossible-gop-picked-up-seats-in-house-picked-up-state-legislatures-picked-up-governorship-held-the-senate-but-sniffy-joe-won-not-a-chance\/\" title=\"IMPOSSIBLE: GOP Picked Up Seats in House, Picked Up State Legislatures, Picked Up Governorship, Held the Senate -- But Sniffy Joe Won?... NOT A CHANCE\">general election<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Trone, one of the founders of Total Wine and More, has spent more than $57 million of his own cash, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-election\/rich-people-running-for-congress-big-test-coming-maryland-rcna150607\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"report\">report<\/a> from NBC News, but has been embroiled in several controversies.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, he had to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/2988391\/trone-pulls-ad-after-outrage-from-black-voters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"pull\">pull<\/a> an advertisement in which he attacked his opponent Prince George\u2019s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks\u2019s inexperience, with one of his supporters saying in the ad that the \u201cU.S. Senate is not a place for training wheels.\u201d The attack ad against Alsobrooks, who is a black woman, was decried as racist and misogynistic by some. Trone also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/2937304\/david-trone-maryland-senate-bid-racial-slur\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"apologized\">apologized<\/a> in March for his use of a racial slur during a congressional hearing. He claimed that he misspoke and meant to say \u201cbugaboo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If Trone defeats Alsobrooks in the primary, he is expected to face an unexpectedly challenging race in the general election against popular former GOP Gov. Larry Hogan. While the race in blue Maryland is still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cookpolitical.com\/ratings\/senate-race-ratings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"considered\">considered<\/a> \u201clikely Democratic\u201d by the <em>CookPoliticalReport<\/em>, Hogan is a significantly more popular figure than a typical GOP candidate in the state.<\/p>\n<h2>Bernie Moreno \u2014 Ohio<\/h2>\n<p>Republican Bernie Moreno has also poured his funds into his bid to oust Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) in increasingly red Ohio.<\/p>\n<p>Moreno has given $3 million of his funds toward his Senate bid after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/review-in-trumps-shadow-the-battle-for-2024-and-the-future-of-the-gop\/\" title=\"REVIEW: \u2018In Trump\u2019s Shadow: The Battle for 2024 and the Future of the GOP\u2019\">hotly contested primary<\/a> and entering a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/three-competitive-senate-seats-could-be-decided-by-money-flowing-in-from-an-unexpected-source\/\" title=\"Three competitive Senate seats could be decided by money flowing in from an unexpected source\">similarly tense general election<\/a>. While the Republican has given himself a significant fundraising boost, Brown has had the cash advantage in the race.<\/p>\n<p>The Ohio Senate seat is one Democrats must hold on to if they have hope of maintaining or expanding their majority in the upper chamber of Congress. It is rated as a \u201ctoss-up\u201d by the <em>CookPoliticalReport<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2>Tim Sheehy \u2014 Montana<\/h2>\n<p>Republican Tim Sheehy is also trying to oust a Democratic incumbent in a red state, Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT), and is using his piggy bank to move toward that goal.<\/p>\n<p>Like the race in the Buckeye State, Montana is a crucial race for Democrats if they wish to keep the Senate majority after November. Sheehy has poured $1.5 million of his own money into his bid to flip the seat, with no major primary opponent in the way of a one-on-one race against Tester in the general election.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sheehy\u2019s race against Tester is also considered a \u201ctoss-up\u201d by the <em>CookPoliticalReport<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside Moreno and Sheehy, Republicans are banking on other wealthy candidates to help with funding, as they have trailed Democrats in fundraising in key races in recent years.
