Disputes over \u200crecordings from a probe \u2063into President Joe Biden&#8217;s handling of classified documents have led to\u200b tensions with House Republicans. A planned markup for May \u206216 indicates a lack of resolution, with the Department\u200b of Justice facing pressure to provide\u200b the needed audio files.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p>The House Judiciary Committee is poised to initiate contempt of Congress proceedings against Attorney General <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/merrick-garland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Merrick Garland<\/a> in a clash over recordings from special counsel Robert Hur\u2019s investigation into President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/joe-biden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joe Biden<\/a>\u2018s handling of classified documents.<\/p>\n<p>With no apparent breakthrough in negotiations between House Republicans and the Department of Justice (DOJ) for lawmakers to get the audio files, a source confirmed to The Daily Wire that a markup is being planned for May 16, which is Thursday of next week.<\/p>\n<p>House Oversight Chairman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/james-comer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">James Comer<\/a> (R-KY) and Judiciary Chairman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/jim-jordan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jim Jordan<\/a> (R-OH) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/house-republicans-give-ag-merrick-garland-one-more-chance-to-deliver-audio-from-biden-docs-probe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sent a letter<\/a> to Garland a few weeks ago, saying they were giving him 10 more days to fully comply with their February subpoenas or face contempt of Congress proceedings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour response to the subpoenas remains inadequate, suggesting that you are withholding records for partisan purposes and to avoid political embarrassment for President Biden,\u201d the pair wrote, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2024\/04\/16\/jim-jordan-james-comer-robert-hur-transcript-joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">copy of the April 15 letter obtained<\/a> by The Daily Caller.<\/p>\n<p>The lawmakers warned they would have \u201cno choice but to invoke contempt of Congress proceedings\u201d unless they were given the audio recordings of Hur\u2019s interview with Biden and of the special counsel\u2019s interview with Biden\u2019s ghostwriter, Mark Zwonitzer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo avoid this, the Committees expect you to produce all responsive materials no later than 12:00 p.m. on April 25, 2024,\u201d Comer and Jordan added.<\/p>\n<p>The two chairmen had previously set an April 8 deadline, warning their committees would \u201cconsider taking further action, such as the invocation of contempt of Congress proceedings\u201d without full compliance.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant Attorney General Carlos Uriarte <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/garland-risks-contempt-of-congress-as-doj-spurns-house-gop-demand-for-biden-audio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sent<\/a> a letter to the lawmakers on April 8, saying a transcript for the two-day interview with Biden already provided to them should be sufficient. A transcript of Hur\u2019s interview with Zwonitzer was also given.<\/p>\n<p>The DOJ is \u201cconcerned\u201d about the demands \u201cthat is cumulative of information we already gave you\u201d and they indicate lawmakers want it for \u201cpolitical purposes\u201d rather than \u201clegitimate oversight or investigatory functions,\u201d Uriarte said.<\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/onelink.to\/dwapp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-describedby=\"sk-tooltip-9096\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/onelink.to\/dwapp&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1713368476293000&#038;usg=AOvVaw0HZF-chSmGRTwvVi8yTUG1\">CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Hur\u2019s report, which was released in February, criticized Biden\u2019s retention of classified records while out of office, yet the prosecutor declined to recommend charges.<\/p>\n<p>The report described Biden as a \u201csympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory\u201d whom a jury likely would not convict \u201cof a serious felony that requires a mental state of willfulness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hur also found that Zwonitzer deleted recordings of conversations he had with Biden upon learning about the documents inquiry.<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>However, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/garland-risks-contempt-of-congress-as-doj-spurns-house-gop-demand-for-biden-audio\/\" title=\"Garland faces potential contempt of Congress as DOJ rejects House GOP's request for Biden audio\">ghostwriter provided \u201cplausible<\/a>, innocent reasons\u201d for his actions during the interview and Hur said he ultimately determined the evidence would not suffice for a conviction on obstruction of justice.<\/p>\n<p>Biden and the White House have pushed back against Hur\u2019s characterizations in his report, but Garland insisted that it would have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/garland-says-censoring-hurs-biden-docs-report-would-have-been-absurd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cabsurd\u201d<\/a> for someone in his position to have edited or censored the special counsel\u2019s explanation.<\/p>\n<p>During testimony to Congress in April, Garland <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cspan\/status\/1780261901768831242\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">acknowledged<\/a> his agency sent correspondence \u201cexplaining our position with respect to the recordings\u201d and noted the \u201clongstanding practice\u201d of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/house-republicans-give-ag-merrick-garland-one-more-chance-to-deliver-audio-from-biden-docs-probe\/\" title=\"House Republicans grant AG Merrick Garland another opportunity to provide audio from Biden documents investigation\">keeping witness records confidential<\/a> to not \u201cchill\u201d future investigations.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The House Judiciary Committee readies for contempt of Congress action against AG Garland amid disputes over recordings from special counsel Robert Hur&#8217;s probe into President Biden&#8217;s document management.
