Garber, the interim president of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/harvard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Harvard University<\/a>, has threatened to remove <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/gaza\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>pro-Palestinian<\/a> occupiers from Harvard Yard through \u201cinvoluntary leave,\u201d according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/higher-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>universitywide<\/a> statement issued Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The message comes as finals conclude and the specter of confrontations with graduation ceremonies grows. Students who have been suspended in connection with the protests will not be able to complete final exams or remain in Harvard housing, Garber wrote, adding they \u201cmust cease to be present on campus until reinstated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI write today with this simple message: The continuation of the encampment presents a significant risk to the educational environment of the University,\u201d Garber <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harvard.edu\/president\/news\/2024\/encampment-in-harvard-yard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said<\/a>. \u201cThose who participate in or perpetuate its continuation will be referred for involuntary leave from their Schools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harvard Out of Occupied Palestine, a group organizing the encampment that is not recognized by the university, has maintained its occupation of Harvard Yard for 13 days. In a statement Monday responding to Garber, the group said that \u201cGarber\u2019s threats represent a significant and unprecedented escalation by the University\u201d and noted its members planned to respond at a press conference later Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>The occupation has been allowed to remain as the school conducts disciplinary proceedings.<\/p>\n<p>While Garber has said in the past that there is a \u201cvery high bar\u201d that must be surpassed before justifying a police intervention, his message on suspensions and the requirement that occupiers leave campus appears to be a step closer to removing them forcibly.
