The journalism school\u2019s Memorial \u2063includes figures tied to terrorist groups like Hamas. US documents link them to military activities and inciting violence. The defense by \u2062journalism groups is disputed, as \u200dpropaganda&#8217;s impact is akin to violence. \u2064Numerous examples show the severe consequences of terrorist propaganda dissemination.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The revered <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journalism.columbia.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Columbia Journalism School<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  issues this year\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pulitzer.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pulitzer Prizes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  on its New York campus this week, with an unaddressed problem next door in its own hallowed \u201cPulitzer Hall.\u201d Prominently displayed inside the lobby, Columbia Journalism School has allowed a memorial shrine to fallen Gazan \u201cjournalists\u201d who were anything but that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As I <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-13371267\/columbia-protest-palestine-israel-journalism-todd-bensman.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">reported in The Daily Mail<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  five days before the school\u2019s 108th award ceremony, at least 15 of the journalists worked for U.S. Treasury Department-designated terrorist entity, \u201cAl Aqsa TV,\u201d Hamas\u2019 primary propaganda arm. President Barack Obama <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/tg594\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">designated Al Aqsa TV in 2010<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  after it pressed children to become suicide bombers and learn to use the AK-47, loudly praised terrorist bombings in Israel, and routinely <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adl.org\/resources\/news\/al-aqsa-tv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">urged civilian slaughters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The U.S. State Department declared the station\u2019s owner, Hamas, a Foreign Terrorist Organization in 1997, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/policies\/fight-against-terrorism\/terrorist-list\/#hamas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">as have dozens<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of Western nations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That\u2019s not even the worst of it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 2016, Obama\u2019s State Department designated the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/2009-2017.state.gov\/r\/pa\/prs\/ps\/2016\/09\/262004.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">station\u2019s director<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Hamas interior minister Fathi Ahmad Mohammad Hammad, as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist. Hammad served as a senior military commander who supervised military tunnel construction under Gaza, where Hamas is hiding 130 Israeli hostages its terrorists seized during the October 7 attack; and \u201ccoordinated terrorist cells,\u201d U.S. government documents state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Six more on the journalism school\u2019s walls worked for the Hamas-owned Al Aqsa Voice Radio, a sibling of the TV station whose broadcasters have called on Gazans to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/middle_east\/hamas-radio-station-in-gaza-reports-on-the-sunny-side-of-islamist-movements-rule\/2014\/09\/28\/cf533106-c8b2-47ab-9c6f-1f1acc075ca3_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">act as human shields<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  for Hamas offices and routinely encourage civilian murder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Eleven more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/02\/26\/who-are-the-killed-gazan-journalists-affiliated-with-palestinian-terror-groups\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">are accused by Israel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  of working for propaganda outlets controlled by three other groups the United States has legally declared outlawed terrorist organizations, including the ultra-violent rocket-launching Palestinian Islamic Jihad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As it prepared to hand out Pulitzer Prizes, the journalism school ignored my emailed questions. But journalism groups, including the main one who drafted the tribute list upon which the school memorial is predicated \u2014 the Committee to Protect Journalists \u2014 trotted out an old, largely unchallenged argument for promulgating its list: they\u2019re still journalists if they self-identified as journalists and weren\u2019t pulling triggers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That line of justification occupies extreme fringes of mainstream academia counterterrorism, military, and law enforcement thinking worldwide, notably in the United States. The U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/why-isnt-homeland-security-monitoring-a-muslim-only-immigrant-shelter-at-the-us-border\/\" title=\"Why Isn\u2019t Homeland Security Monitoring A Muslim-Only Immigrant Shelter At The US Border?\">homeland security establishment<\/a> regards the pen and camera of terrorist propagandists as deadly as fingers on triggers \u2014 and would kill or prosecute half of those on Columbia Journalism School\u2019s wall if given a chance. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Indeed, the U.S. Homeland Security and presidents on both sides of the aisle regard propagandists for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dems-back-measure-to-give-aid-to-iraqi-militia-groups-tied-to-iran\/\" title=\"Dems Back Measure To Give Aid to Iraqi Militia Groups Tied to Iran\">designated terrorist groups<\/a> like ISIS and Al Qaeda as dangerous enough to assassinate abroad with Hellfire missiles. Inside the United States, the establishment prosecutes and imprisons propagandists like those on Columbia Journalism School\u2019s walls whenever possible. American journalism institutions are so far out of step with the rest of the civilized world that an argument can be made that their political stunts aid and abet the murder of real people. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>The line of argument journalism groups use to defend their tribute lists<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The binary \u201cif-not-combatant-then-hero\u201d argument is hardly new. It last flew in 2013, overcoming Jewish and pro-Israel groups that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeastmonitor.com\/20140204-us-newseum-withholds-tribute-to-palestinian-journalists-under-pressure-from-the-pro-israel-lobby\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">bitterly complained<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  when the now-defunct Newseum in Washington D.C. included two Al-Aqsa TV cameramen on a highly prominent KIA memorial list projected on a 74-foot First Amendment tablet facing Pennsylvania Avenue. They\u2019d been killed in an outbreak of violence between Hamas and Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dozens of journalism groups, including the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), vigorously argued that the two cameramen weren\u2019t carrying weapons or conducting surveillance when Israel bombed their vehicle, which they\u2019d marked as TV press. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Newseum initially pulled the names but then <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/worldviews\/wp\/2013\/05\/13\/should-the-newseum-consider-cameramen-for-hamas-run-tv-to-be-journalists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">bought into the narrative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  that these two cameramen weren\u2019t carrying weapons and therefore <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ynetnews.com\/articles\/0,7340,L-4378438,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">belonged back in<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  the tribute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Now the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) is pushing the same narrative for its new 2024 tribute list upon which the journalism school\u2019s Pulitzer Hall memorial is based.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cCPJ does not support journalists engaged in breaking the law,\u201d the group told me in an email containing a recycled earlier statement about its tribute list. \u201cIn the cases we have documented, multiple sources have found no evidence to date that these journalists were engaged in militant activity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On that basis alone, the argument follows, they were legitimate journalists who died in noble public service. More than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.org\/2024\/03\/news-outlets-express-solidarity-with-journalists-in-gaza\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">100 news organizations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  have joined the committee in signing a letter in February attesting to worthiness of its tribute on the sole grounds that none were throwing bombs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s time to debunk the intellectual defense these journalism groups rely on to recast terrorist propagandists as noble journalists who died in public service. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Propaganda Kills<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Because they hold that propaganda kills just as surely as bullets and bombs, the United States and its Western allies have mounted <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/national-security\/in-a-propaganda-war-us-tried-to-play-by-the-enemys-rules\/2015\/05\/08\/6eb6b732-e52f-11e4-81ea-0649268f729e_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">relentless counter-propaganda campaigns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  against terrorist radio, television, and online media outlets just like those run by Hamas and the Palestine Islamic Jihad out of Gaza. The key feature of this campaign are assassination hunts overseas for ISIS and al-Qaeda propagandists in the long-settled academic science, rooted in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/joc\/article-abstract\/74\/1\/63\/7275800?redirectedFrom=fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">consistent academic studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, that nonviolent propaganda for terrorist groups <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.buffalo.edu\/news\/releases\/2023\/09\/hahn-terrorist-propaganda.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">tightly correlates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  with attack frequency and human casualties worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe continued presence of terrorist content on the web is a grave risk to citizens and to society at large,\u201d the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/home-affairs.ec.europa.eu\/policies\/internal-security\/counter-terrorism-and-radicalisation\/prevention-radicalisation\/terrorist-content-online_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">European Commission concluded<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  in one typical policy paper proposing the find and remove such content. \u201cTerrorists misuse the internet to spread their messages to intimidate, radicalize, recruit and facilitate carrying out terrorist attacks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One of the more prominent hunts ended with an August 30, 2016 precision airstrike by U.S.-led coalition forces that killed ISIS propaganda leader and spokesman Abu Muhammad al-Adnani, whose grisly propaganda empire in slick monthly magazines Dabiq, Rumiya and radio and TV stations was credited with drawing thousands of recruits to Syria and inspiring murderous attacks around the globe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Foreign Policy magazine, among many other creditable sources, quoted active-duty <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2016\/08\/31\/going-after-the-isis-propaganda-mastermind\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">government professionals and diplomats<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  who credited his media work and messaging with inspiring followers to kill. U.S.-led coalition forces <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/News\/Releases\/Release\/Article\/930843\/statement-by-pentagon-press-secretary-peter-cook-on-precision-airstrike-targeti\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">finally killed Adnani<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  on August 30, 2016 in a precision airstrike near Al Bab, Syria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That was hardly the first or last U.S. killing of a terrorist propagandist overseas, including American ones. In September 2011, President Obama controversially ordered a Hellfire missile strike that killed U.S. born al-Qaeda propagandist Anwar al-Awlaki in Yemen, saying his body of work <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/warontherocks.com\/2016\/01\/killing-anwar-targeting-jihadi-propagandists-is-only-part-of-the-solution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">killed people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  and \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/national-security\/legal-memo-backing-drone-strike-is-released\/2014\/06\/23\/1f48dd16-faec-11e3-8176-f2c941cf35f1_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">posed an imminent threat of violence or death to other Americans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d even if he himself did not shoot the guns or detonate the bombs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Al-Awlaki\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/national-security\/al-qaeda-figure-seen-as-key-inspiration-for-san-bernardino-attacker\/2015\/12\/18\/f0e00d80-a5a0-11e5-9c4e-be37f66848bb_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">lectures and other propaganda<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  were seen as the chief inspiration for the bloody 2015 terror attack that killed 15 people in San Bernardino, California; Hassan Nidal\u2019s deadly 2010 attack at Fort Hood, Texas; the Faisal Shahzad attack on Times Square; the Boston bombing and dozens of others around the world that killed hundreds of innocents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In April 2015, the CIA fired Hellfire missiles in Pakistan that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/american-al-qaeda-leader-adam-gadahn-dead-drone-strke-state-n346891\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">killed U.S.-born Adam Gadahn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, known as \u201cAzzam the American\u201d another notorious propagandist for al Qaeda whose work was considered so dangerous the U.S. government put out a $1 million reward for his arrest on treason charges in California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In March 2017, another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/isis-propaganda-chief-killed-strike-iraq-syria-border\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">U.S. airstrike killed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  ISIS propaganda chief Ibrahim al Ansari in Iraq for inciting vehicle, knife and arson attacks against American citizens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the Israel-Gaza theater, the U.S. and Europe have left assassination operations to Israel, which is plenty enough capable of taking out these propagandists and often does so just like the Americans and European allies.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Hard Time For Terrorist Propaganda<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In December 2019, a U.S. federal judge sentenced Texas-born Dallas resident Said Azzam Mohamad Rahim to a hefty 30-year prison sentence for terrorism. But Rahim didn\u2019t earn that punishment for killing anyone himself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He\u2019s in prison for spreading a \u201cwarped ideology on social media\u201d and for \u201cpromoting violence against innocent people, including Americans,\u201d a Department of Justice <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/dallas-man-sentenced-30-years-terrorism-charges\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">press release stated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. For years from his home in North Texas, Rahim moderated a \u201cState of the Islamic Caliphate\u201d social media channel on Zello dedicated to recruiting ISIS fighters and where he touted acts of terror.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cKill and do not consult anyone,\u201d he said in on 2016 message. \u201cKill, by any means. Smash his head on the wall. Spit in his face. Burn, I mean anything, anything. Poison anything!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Even if America\u2019s institutions of journalism refuse to see it, Rahim\u2019s prosecution and 30-year sentence are but one of many emblematic examples of how the entire United States security establishment views the provision of propaganda on behalf of a designated terror organization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So profoundly fearful of non-violent activities was Congress and the White House after 9\/11 that it expanded and enhanced \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/crsreports.congress.gov\/product\/pdf\/RS\/RS22222\/4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">material support for terrorism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d statutes that carry harsh sentences that include life in prison. One of the key provisions of these laws targets anyone who knows full well that they \u201cwork \u201cunder that terrorist organization\u2019s direction or control\u201d and that it has been designated as a terror organization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These criminal \u201cmaterial support\u201d statutes have been used to send U.S.-based jihadists to prison hundreds of times for more than two decades, often for spreading propaganda on behalf of designated terrorist groups or doing anything at all to support their murderous missions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The U.S. justice system has brooked no mercy for Hamas operatives inside the United States who merely raised money for Hamas. The DOJ in 2002 broke up and prosecuted the largest Hamas fundraising operation in U.S. history, the Holy Land Foundation, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/federal-judge-hands-downs-sentences-holy-land-foundation-case\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">dishing out<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/report-chinese-communists-target-anonymous-critics-on-facebook-twitter\/\" title=\"Report: Chinese Communists Target Anonymous Critics on Facebook, Twitter\">prison sentences ranging<\/a> to 65 years for the so-called \u201cHoly Land five\u201d who were prosecuted in Dallas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What does this history mean in today\u2019s context?
