The company reported that it destroyed 3.6 percent of its total flock after discovering the virus.<\/p>\n<p>A person in Texas was also diagnosed with the bird flu, apparently contracting the disease from dairy cows in what was said to be the first known instance globally of a person catching this version of the virus from a mammal, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/bird-flu-texas-cows-355f1e288e72df8b81b0e2efd8b3ae2f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AP<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Food and Drug Administration provided an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/alerts-advisories-safety-information\/updates-highly-pathogenic-avian-influenza-hpai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">update<\/a> on the virus on April 25, announcing that remnants of bird flu were found in about one in five recently tested samples, \u201cwith a greater proportion of positive results coming from milk in areas with infected herds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It said FDA testing \u201cdid not detect any live, infectious virus,\u201d which reaffirmed the agency\u2019s assessment \u201cthat the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/texas-cattle-industry-facing-crisis-after-wildfires-avian-flu-hit-panhandle\/\" title=\"The Texas cattle industry is in crisis following wildfires and avian flu outbreak in the panhandle\">commercial milk supply<\/a> is safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The virus seems to be primarily affecting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fact-check-no-raw-goat-milk-is-not-a-healthy-alternative-to-baby-formula\/\" title=\"FACT CHECK: No, Raw Goat Milk Is Not A Healthy Alternative To Baby Formula\">raw dairy products<\/a>, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/alerts-advisories-safety-information\/updates-highly-pathogenic-avian-influenza-hpai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">update<\/a> Wednesday, with the agency saying the results obtained thus far \u201cshow that pasteurization is effective in inactivating\u201d the virus.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/fda-says-bird-flu-virus-found-milk-grocery-store-shelves\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FDA<\/a> said it will continue to \u201cadvise strongly against the consumption of raw milk and recommends that industry does not manufacture or sell raw milk or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/9-cases-of-salmonella-linked-to-raw-milk-products-reported-in-san-diego\/\" title=\"9 Salmonella cases linked to raw milk products reported in San Diego.\">raw milk products<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2024\/05\/01\/how-to-protect-backyard-chicken-flock-bird-flu\/73531252007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USA Today<\/a> article on Wednesday warned people who own chickens to take precautions because \u201cat-home chickens are far from safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These include avoiding unprotected contact with chickens that appear sick, avoiding contact with wild birds and properly cooking poultry and eggs, as doing so will kill the virus.<\/p>\n<p>Avian Enterprises, which specializes in bird repellant products, also <a href=\"https:\/\/aviancontrolinc.com\/bird-flu-symptoms-in-chickens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stressed<\/a> the importance of having a proper and secure enclosure for chickens to mitigate the risk of contact with infected birds.<\/p>\n<p>The report said to watch out for the following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2024\/05\/01\/how-to-protect-backyard-chicken-flock-bird-flu\/73531252007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">symptoms<\/a> of the virus in chickens:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2022 Sudden death without clinical signs.<\/em><br clear=\"none\"><em>\u2022 Lack of energy and appetite.<\/em><br clear=\"none\"><em>\u2022 Decreased egg production or soft-shelled or misshapen eggs.<\/em><br clear=\"none\"><em>\u2022 Swelling of head, comb, eyelid, wattles, and hocks.<\/em><br clear=\"none\"><em>\u2022 Purple discoloration of wattles, comb, and legs.<\/em><br clear=\"none\"><em>\u2022 Nasal discharge, coughing, and sneezing.<\/em><br clear=\"none\"><em>\u2022 Incoordination.<\/em><br clear=\"none\"><em>\u2022 Diarrhea.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If your chickens show any of these symptoms, immediately contact your local health authorities.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/avianflu\/prevention.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a> cautioned that birds <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/massive-recall-issued-common-herb-people-across-multiple-states-infected-one-hospitalized\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">infected<\/a> with the virus might not show any symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>The CDC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/avianflu\/h5\/backyardflockowners.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">advised<\/a> that if any of the poultry in your flock have the bird flu, you should not touch sick or dead birds or anything they may have contaminated, you should wear the proper personal protection equipment, and you should avoid stirring up dust and bird feathers when trying to clean contaminated areas.<\/p>\n<p>There are also concerns about pets.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Meghan Davis, an associate professor in the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, spoke with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/bird-flu-warning-dogs-1897083\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Newsweek<\/a> about ways that animal owners can mitigate the risk of their pets catching the disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you are someone who purchases raw milk for consumption at home, take great caution with pets and raw milk,\u201d Davis said. \u201cIt\u2019s not recommended that anyone in the household consume raw milk products.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Davis also advised farmers who own dogs to exercise caution, saying animals that live on farms are at the highest risk and their owners should keep them away from dairy cows or chickens.<\/p>\n<p>While the FDA and CDC noted there is no imminent cause for concern for the general public, all animal owners, especially those in rural areas, were advised to take the necessary precautions.<\/p>\n<p>Properly cooking your food, exercising proper hygiene and avoiding raw dairy products are the best ways to protect yourself from the bird flu, according to the agencies.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to your animals, you are advised to keep a close eye on them, ensure their enclosures are secure and refrain from feeding them raw dairy products.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p><b><i>A Note from Our Deputy Managing
