At other times, they conducted mass sterilizations and intentionally injured or infected prisoners to test treatment options. Indeed, some of what we know about a woman\u2019s reproductive system today is due to the detailed \u2014 and deadly \u2014 experiments Nazi Germany conducted on unwilling prisoners.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-993375382\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-3b2a2c7695a7d0e002664f9bef4a8e15 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-3b2a2c7695a7d0e002664f9bef4a8e15\"><\/div>\n<p>Adolf Hitler himself also oversaw the creation of <em>Lebensborn<\/em>, a German home devoted to caring for women and children of the \u201cright\u201d eugenic profile \u2014 light skin, blond hair, and blue eyes. With basic accommodations and health care covered, Hitler encouraged them to procreate as often as possible. In one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettyimages.dk\/detail\/news-photo\/nazi-nurse-with-german-super-race-children-whom-nazi-news-photo\/871684010\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unsettling image<\/a>, children are shown sitting in front of a bright light as scientists try to lighten their skin and eye color. To Hitler\u2019s dismay, neither the home nor his efforts to subsidize the government-preferred kind of children resulted in high birth rates.<\/p>\n<p>Nazi Germany\u2019s eugenic practices hang heavy in the minds of German lawmakers today. That\u2019s one of the reasons Germany\u2019s laws governing assisted reproductive technology are some of the best in the world. German law <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/which-countries-allow-commercial-surrogacy-2023-04-05\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prohibits<\/a> surrogacy-for-pay, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/should-germanys-ban-on-egg-donation-be-lifted\/a-52221387\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bans<\/a> egg donation, and governs in vitro fertilization (IVF) with the highest standard of medical care for both the mother and the embryonic child.<\/p>\n<p>To avoid the creation of non-implanted embryos, and the subsequent temptation to misuse embryonic life, German law <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/12070796\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">does not allow<\/a> doctors to create more than three embryos in a single round of IVF. This way, women are not overwhelmed by a surplus of embryos they neither intend nor know how to use. Germany also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4429433\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prohibits<\/a> the use of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/illinois-bill-would-allow-residents-to-manufacture-unlimited-embryos-and-destroy-them-all%ef%bf%bc\/\" title=\"Illinois Bill Would Allow Residents To Manufacture Unlimited Embryos And Destroy Them All\ufffc\">preimplantation genetic diagnosis<\/a> (PGD) to select the sex or race of children.<\/p>\n<p>Given the dark shadow of Nazi Germany and the eugenic practices that dictated much of its medical research in the 20th century, modern Germans recognize the immense harms of an under-regulated and unaccountable medical industry \u2014 especially one that deals with the creation, selection, and preservation of life itself. Lawmakers in the United States should heed this warning too.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-c369f7709180ca9e847a0adc788bfea7 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-c369f7709180ca9e847a0adc788bfea7\"><\/div>\n<p>There are profound moral issues with the way IVF is practiced in the United States. In many cases, it amounts to eugenics. More than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4429433\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">75 percent of fertility clinics<\/a> offer preimplantation genetic diagnosis for genetic issues; <a href=\"https:\/\/journalofethics.ama-assn.org\/article\/who-should-regulate-preimplantation-genetic-diagnosis-united-states\/2018-12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">73 percent offer<\/a> testing to select a child for his or her sex. This same technology may also allow parents to select for a child\u2019s potential IQ or hair, eye, and skin color.<\/p>\n<p>For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fertility-docs.com\/programs-and-services\/pgd-screening\/choose-your-babys-eye-color\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Fertility Institutes<\/a> advertise eye color selection for parents undergoing IVF and previously advertised \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/technology\/2009\/02\/screening-embryos-for-eye-hair-and-skin-color.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">complexion<\/a>\u201d selection for the child\u2019s skin color. Similarly, a recent survey published in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.ade1083\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Science<\/em><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/2023\/02\/09\/1068209\/americans-test-embryos-college-chances-survey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shows<\/a> that 40 percent of Americans said they would be more likely than not to select a child created via IVF based on their \u201cintellectual aptitude.\u201d No U.S. laws limit preimplantation genetic diagnosis in IVF, even in states, such as Arizona, Missouri, and North Carolina, that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/state-policy\/explore\/abortion-bans-cases-sex-or-race-selection-or-genetic-anomaly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">do not allow<\/a> abortions for sex selection or to avoid certain genetic problems.<\/p>\n<p>Why should states that rightly prohibit abortion to eliminate a child based on its sex allow fertility doctors to use IVF to discard embryonic life for the same reason? One prominent example of this is Paris Hilton. In her pursuit of a little girl, Hilton <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/03\/03\/paris-hilton-to-keep-20-humans-frozen-until-they-die-because-she-wants-a-girl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">created<\/a> 20 distinct, living, human beings with IVF. All 20 were male. Despite her disappointment, Hilton said she would try again for a girl in a second round of IVF. The fate of the remaining embryos was not disclosed.<\/p>\n<p>German law shows it\u2019s possible to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/4-lies-the-media-is-telling-about-abortion-and-pro-life-americans\/\" title=\"4\u00a0Lies The Media Is Telling About Abortion (And Pro-Life Americans)\">protect unborn human life<\/a> and prohibit eugenics without prohibiting all uses of IVF. People on both sides of the aisle should <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/german-laws-show-its-possible-to-legalize-ivf-without-nazi-esque-eugenics\/\" title=\"German Legislation Demonstrates IVF Legalization Without Eugenics\">support similar common-sense regulations<\/a> of the fertility industry right here in the United States.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-611358ee985b0914643b5aea4061839f fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-611358ee985b0914643b5aea4061839f\"><\/div>\n<p>Doing so would not only be morally right, but politically astute. According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Scott_Rasmussen%27s_Number_of_the_Day_for_March_11,_2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent poll<\/a> from Scott Rasmussen, when Americans are given the facts about how IVF is often practiced in the United States, 80 percent of people think IVF services should remain available for couples who cannot otherwise have children. Twenty-four percent think \u201cleftover\u201d embryos should be destroyed, suggesting that 76 percent of people favor another option for these embryos.<\/p>\n<p>Conservatives have been on the back foot on IVF since the Alabama Supreme Court\u2019s ruling in <em>LePage v. Center for Reproductive Medicine<\/em> came out in mid-February. But this polling suggests that pursuing legislation that prohibits the destruction of embryonic life in IVF provides an opportunity to make that weakness a strength.<\/p>\n<p>One approach is to prohibit the destruction of embryos. In 1986, Louisiana passed a <a href=\"https:\/\/legis.la.gov\/legis\/Law.aspx?p=y&#038;d=108446\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">law<\/a> prohibiting the intentional destruction of embryos in IVF and deemed them legal persons. Although a step in the right direction, such a law does nothing to reduce the surplus of embryos typically created in a round of IVF. Such parents must still choose between indefinitely freezing their embryonic children \u2014 which can <a href=\"https:\/\/reprotech.com\/embryo-storage-costs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cost<\/a> hundreds of dollars a year \u2014 or, as some have <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/04\/25\/lousiana-republicans-democrats-advance-bill-granting-immunity-for-killing-embryos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>, discarding the embryos in another state.<\/p>\n<p>To address mass embryo destruction in the fertility industry, lawmakers should first look to advance policies like those in Germany that limit the surplus creation of embryos and prohibit eugenic tests to guess an embryo\u2019s sex, IQ, physical features, or genetic makeup. <\/p>\n<p>Germany knows how quickly things get out of control when an under-regulated and unaccountable medical industry is left to its own devices.
