Is Glock Derangement Syndrome next?<\/p>\n<p>That, if anything, is the takeaway from Arizona Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly\u2019s interview with NBC\u2019s \u201cMeet the Press\u201d on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Kelly was asked about a quote from Kari Lake \u2014 the front-runner in the Republican primary race for the Arizona Senate seat being vacated by independent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema \u2014 in which she told her supporters to \u201cstrap on a Glock\u201d as the election gets ugly as a call to violence.<\/p>\n<p>Lake, in remarks during a Mohave County Republican fundraiser last month, told supporters that it would be a \u201ccrazy run\u201d in the months until the November election against her likely Democratic opponent, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/polls-reveal-positive-signs-trump-highlight-significant-work-gop-senate-candidates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rep. Ruben Gallego<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re going to come after us with everything. That\u2019s why the next six months is going to be intense,\u201d the 2022 Arizona GOP gubernatorial candidate and former newscaster said, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-election\/kari-lake-suggests-supporters-strap-glock-ready-2024-rcna147902\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NBC News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd we need to strap on our \u2014 let\u2019s see. What do we want to strap on?\u201d Lake continued. \u201cWe\u2019re going to strap on our seat belt. We\u2019re going to put on our helmet or your Kari Lake ball cap. We are going to put on the armor of God. And maybe strap on a Glock on the side of us just in case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was already enough hyperventilation over the quote before Kelly appeared on \u201cMeet the Press.\u201d The senator, whose signature issue is gun control \u2014 his wife, former U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords, was shot by a crazed gunman in 2011 \u2014 insisted that \u201cwhat Kari Lake said could result in people getting hurt or killed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think words can translate into violence?\u201d \u201cMeet the Press\u201d host <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/kristen-welker-next-debate-moderator-got-busted-tipping-off-team-hillary-2016\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kristen Welker<\/a> asked him.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Will Kari Lake be elected to the Senate?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cAbsolutely,\u201d Kelly responded. \u201cWords, especially when they come from somebody who is in a leadership position.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Kari Lake\u2019s never been elected to anything. I don\u2019t expect her ever to be elected to anything. But when you\u2019re a candidate for the United States Senate, you need to be careful with your words.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">WATCH: <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenMarkKelly?\">@SenMarkKelly<\/a> (D-Ariz.) says Kari Lake\u2019s rhetoric could get people \u201churt or killed\u201d after she told supporters to \u201cstrap on a Glock\u201d to prepare for the election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t expect her ever to be elected \u2026 but when you\u2019re a candidate \u2026 you need to be careful w\/ your words.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/7M6ADPh3aY\">pic.twitter.com\/7M6ADPh3aY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Meet the Press (@MeetThePress) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MeetThePress\/status\/1787113310891966914?\">May 5, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Now, just so we\u2019re clear, here are the items that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/kari-lake-takes-ballot-counting-machines-case-u-s-supreme-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lake<\/a> said her supporters should \u201cstrap on\u201d in the run-up to this fall\u2019s Arizona senatorial election:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 A seatbelt.<br clear=\"none\">\u2022 A helmet.<br clear=\"none\">\u2022 Or maybe a Kari Lake baseball cap.<br clear=\"none\">\u2022 The armor of God.<br clear=\"none\">\u2022 A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/genius-behind-famous-glock-handgun-dead-94-revolutionized-world-small-arms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Glock<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s say that, as Kelly has intimated, these words can and perhaps will be taken seriously by Kari Lake supporters. We\u2019ll indulge his Glock Derangement Syndrome for a moment here. What would the Kari Lake supporters have to do for her words to translate into action, if they were to take this seriously?<\/p>\n<p>First, they would have to go find themselves a seatbelt to strap themselves into. Given that seatbelts are a bit clumsy to strap oneself into if they aren\u2019t attached to anything that isn\u2019t a seat, they\u2019re probably going to need one of those, too. A little difficult to move around with one of those on your back, but OK.<\/p>\n<p>Next, they will need a helmet. Or maybe a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/arizona-senate-candidate-kari-lake-breaks-record-huge-haul-mar-lago-fundraiser\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kari Lake<\/a> ball cap. This is indeed a difficult decision: The headrest on the car seat is going to make it pretty difficult to get a helmet on comfortably, but on the other hand, the ball cap doesn\u2019t really provide much protection unless you don\u2019t want to get the sun in your eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Following that, they will put on the armor of God. Thankfully this item is ethereal since it\u2019s going to be difficult to fit even more protective equipment under or over that seatbelt.<\/p>\n<p>Next, they will have to put a Glock on their hip. But wait \u2014 <em>how<\/em>? They\u2019ve already put on the seatbelt! It\u2019s a little difficult to wedge a holstered handgun in there. And talk about poor form when it comes to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/alec-baldwin-violated-golden-rule-firearm-safety-somehow-going-guns-fault\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gun safety<\/a>. Trying to shove that sucker in there, they\u2019re liable to have an accident and shoot their leg off.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, by the time they get the Glock unholstered \u2014 what with the seatbelt in their way and the helmet and seat making it way more difficult to move \u2014 pretty much anyone could tackle and neutralize them before anything happened.<\/p>\n<p>And they\u2019re supposed to keep this on until November? Yikes.<\/p>\n<p>Or maybe \u2014 and just hear me out for a second, Senator Kelly \u2014 <em>this was all blatantly metaphorical and nobody would translate these words into violent actions, period, finis, full stop.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m being facetious here in more ways than one, since my assumption \u2014 having followed his career \u2014 is that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/elon-musk-takes-mark-kellys-brother-makes-brutal-statement-fauci-yet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kelly<\/a> isn\u2019t stupid. He\u2019s heard the whole quote and knows full well nobody is going to strap on a handgun because Kari Lake told him to.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re an Arizona voter, however, the senator certainly believes <em>you\u2019re<\/em> stupid \u2014 or at least that you won\u2019t bother to look up the full speech. You lead a busy life. Would Kelly lie to you about the context of this quote? Would \u201cMeet the Press\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>Yes, they would \u2014 just like they have and will continue to lie and twist virtually everything that comes out of Kari Lake\u2019s mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, Arizona is a swing state, but Democrats have only managed to win statewide elections there with centrist candidates, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/polls-reveal-positive-signs-trump-highlight-significant-work-gop-senate-candidates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gallego<\/a> is anything but that.<\/p>\n<p>In order to emerge victorious in November, therefore, Lake has to continue to be painted as a dangerous, fringe candidate who\u2019s tacitly calling for violence, among other perfidies.<\/p>\n<p>None of what they say to create this impression has to be true, mind you. In fact, I can almost guarantee you that almost none of it will be.<\/p>\n<p>As far as the Democrats and the media are concerned, however, it just has to be believed by enough <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/mexican-authorities-target-arizona-rancher-accused-shooting-illegal-immigrant-attorney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arizonans<\/a> long enough to work.<\/p>\n<p><em>Disclosure: Floyd Brown, one of the owners and founder of The Western Journal, is serving on a volunteer basis as chairman of Kari Lake\u2019s Senate campaign.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p><b><i>A Note from Our Deputy Managing Editor:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span>I heard a chilling comment the other day: \u201cWe don\u2019t even know if an election will be held in 2024.\u201d <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>That wasn\u2019t said by a conspiracy theorist or a doomsday prophet.
