Upper III<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   May 6, 2024 at 5:21am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>Poll numbers published Friday show former President Donald Trump ahead of incumbent President Joe Biden by double digits \u2014 but don\u2019t hang up those victory posters just yet.<\/p>\n<p>The good news for the Trump team is that when Rassmussen asked respondents to choose among three names, Trump got 46 percent of the support of likely voters, Biden picked up 36 percent, and independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. took 9 percent. Another 4 percent said they\u2019d vote for someone else, and the other 5 percent or so were undecided.<\/p>\n<p>And yes, by most accounts, Trump has an edge over Biden going into November\u2019s presidential election. But there are a few important details to keep in mind.<\/p>\n<p>First off, this is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rasmussenreports.com\/public_content\/politics\/biden_administration\/election_2024_trump_now_10_over_biden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rasmussen<\/a> poll, which have a history of favoring Republican candidates. In its final 2020 polling, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.270towin.com\/2020-polls-biden-trump\/national\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rasmussen<\/a> showed Biden winning \u2014 but by 1 point, not the 4.5-point margin with which he ended that election. (It also predicted a 1-point generic Republican advantage in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/other\/2018_generic_congressional_vote-6185.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2018 midterms<\/a> that Republicans lost by 8.4 points, and predicted a 5-point GOP edge in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/other\/2022-generic-congressional-vote-7361.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2022 midterms<\/a> that they won by only 2.8 points.)<\/p>\n<p>Second, Rasmussen doesn\u2019t provide a full explanation of its methodology, making it difficult to evaluate how accurate its polling might be.<\/p>\n<p>And third \u2014 and probably most importantly \u2014 the election is still six months out. A lot can happen in six months. Events in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/house-passes-61-billion-foreign-aid-package-ukraine-speaker-johnson-forces-bill-floor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ukraine<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trump-rips-netanyahu-oct-7th-attack-israel-thousands-people-knew\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Middle East<\/a>, on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/revealed-pro-hamas-billionaires-funding-pro-gaza-campus-rioters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">college campuses<\/a> around the U.S. or in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/judge-threatens-trump-jail-time-hits-massive-fine-hush-money-trial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Manhattan courtroom<\/a> could all sway these numbers in one way or another, as could many other possible events.<\/p>\n<p>It should also be noted that the poll is certainly an outlier. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolling.com\/polls\/president\/general\/2024\/trump-vs-biden-vs-kennedy-vs-west-vs-stein\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RealClearPolling<\/a> average of polls taken over the past month or so gives Trump a 2.9-point edge over Biden \u2014 and here it\u2019s worth noting that six of the polls included in that average show Trump on top, four show a tie and only one gives Biden the edge.<\/p>\n<p>However, it\u2019s also worth nothing that all but two of those 11 polls survey registered \u2014 not likely \u2014 voters, making them potentially decent barometers of public opinion but not super useful as predictors of November results.<\/p>\n<p>As the <a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/article\/trump-vs-biden-polls-dont-be-fooled-by-outliers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Intelligencer<\/a> recommended in weekend story about presidential polling, \u201cif the question is \u2018Who\u2019s ahead?\u2019 and the race is close enough to make precision matter, stick with the averages.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Will Trump\u2019s lead in the polls continue to grow?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>An, of course, these are all national polls \u2014 and presidential elections are won state-by-state, not by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/6-steps-the-democrats-will-take-to-fundamentally-alter-america-and-ensure-their-permanent-power\/\" title=\"6 Steps The Democrats Will Take To Fundamentally Alter America And Ensure Their Permanent Power\">national popular vote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Still, RCP gives Trump a slight edge in Electoral College votes \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolling.com\/maps\/president\/2024\/toss-up\/electoral-college\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">219-to-214<\/a>, with 104 too close to call, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolling.com\/maps\/president\/2024\/no-toss-up\/electoral-college\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">312-to-226<\/a> if it goes ahead and calls the close races (but I\u2019d take that last predicition with a grain of salt \u2014 or possibly the whole shaker \u2014 if I were you).<\/p>\n<p>Trump also has an aggregate 3.2 percent edge over Biden in the seven <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolling.com\/elections\/president\/2024\/battleground-states\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/update-corrupted-software-that-stole-6000-votes-from-trump-in-michigan-county-shut-down-for-two-hours-in-red-counties-in-georgia-on-election-day\/\" title=\"Update: Corrupted Software that Stole 6,000 Votes From Trump in Michigan County -- Shut Down for TWO HOURS in Red Counties in Georgia on Election Day\">swing states<\/a><\/a> RealClearPolling tracks, winning all seven \u2014 Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.<\/p>\n<p>(RCP leaves <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/minnesota-supreme-court-hands-trump-win-tosses-14th-amendment-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Minnesota<\/a> out of its list of swing states, probably because no Republican has carried the state since 1972. Still, Biden has only a 2.3-point lead there according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolling.com\/polls\/president\/general\/2024\/minnesota\/trump-vs-biden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most current polls<\/a>, which may indicate that there are another 10 Electoral College delegates up for grabs.)<\/p>\n<p>The takeaway from all that \u2014 the presidential race is almost certainly closer than Rasmussen would indicate, but Trump does certainly seem to have the advantage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOverall, it\u2019s reasonably clear that the Biden-Trump race remains very close in terms of the national popular vote with Trump maintaining a small advantage in winning enough battleground states to secure the 270 electoral votes necessary for victory,\u201d the Intelligence wrote Saturday. \u201cThat\u2019s also what other metrics like candidate favorability, partisan affiliation, and above all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/kamala-harris-condemns-d-c-demonstrators-despite-past-encouragement-of-violent-blm-mobs\/\" title=\"Kamala Harris condemns D.C. demonstrators despite past encouragement of violent BLM mobs\">recent history<\/a> would suggest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even The New York Times agrees with that sentiment, by the way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s also true that Trump could win this election in a popular vote,\u201d Joe Kahn, the executive editor of The Times, said in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.semafor.com\/article\/05\/05\/2024\/joe-kahn-the-newsroom-is-not-a-safe-space\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview<\/a> published Sunday. \u201cAnd there\u2019s a very good chance, based on our polling and other independent polling, that he will win that election in a popular vote.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one is predicting a Trump win quite yet, of course \u2014 as mentioned earlier, it\u2019s too soon for that. But if left-leaning publications like The Times and Intelligencer are saying things are looking for good for the former president, that probably means a lot more than a 10-point lead in a Rasmussen poll.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p><b><i>A Note from Our Deputy Managing Editor:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span>\u201cWe don\u2019t even know if an election will be held in 2024.\u201d Those 12 words have been stuck in my head since I first read them. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Former Lt.
